With all the excitement following his win, it was hard to get Calvin away from the crowd to sit down for his interview, but I managed to get him for a few minutes. A 19-year-old member of Team Superfriends from Toronto, Calvin was definitely enjoying the win.
How confident were you that you’d win?
“I wasn’t confident at all, I figured I’d go 0-2 drop!” Matt Peddle leaned in to add, “Superfriends are gonna take him around back . . . you all might not see him at Worlds.”
You went undefeated up until the final round. When did you start feeling confident?
“At about Round 5 I felt confident . . .after 5 rounds I was good.”
I noticed you were judging yesterday. When did you qualify?
“I played in one regional this year, I won my invite at a Windsor Regional. It was the first one after the new Forbidden list came out. I’ve been judging at all the other events after winning.”
What’s the first thing you’re going to do tomorrow?
“I”ll go renew my passport!” (Calvin knows the right answer!) Dale leaned in to add, “Tell them you really thought Dale would win.” “I really thought Dale was going to win,” Calvin added, very sincerely and without missing a beat.
What will you do in Tokyo?
“I’ve never been there and I’ve always wanted to go . . . I don’t know! Go sightseeing, eat some sushi, have a good time.”
With that, I released him, since everyone else was clamoring for his attention. Canada’s got some good representation for the August event. Good luck to you there, Calvin—you’re the first person to ever win the Scrub Brush Challenge as well as the main event!
