John Jensen, a Southern Florida member of Team Nexus, took his seat opposite Jason Holloway of Ft. Worth, Texas, who was representing Team Outphase. Head judge Frank DeBrito cautioned the players about keeping track of life points, playing carefully and precisely, and announcing their moves. Both players were ready to go and in good spirits. It was bound to be an exciting match with 60 minutes on the clock.
John won the high roll, and opted to go first. After drawing, he studied his hand briefly, set one spell or trap, and ended.
Jason drew, looked, and considered. He then summoned Sangan and attacked directly, while John looked at his set card and took the damage. After checking over his hand one more time, Jason set two more spells or traps and ended. John considered his position, then set another spell or trap and a monster. Jason drew, and wasn’t going to let John gain a presence on the field. With Nobleman of Crossout, he removed John’s Exiled Force from the game and struck again with Sangan. John was now at 6000 life points, while Jason had a full 8000.
John wasn’t going to sit there tamely while Sangan took bite after bite out of his life points, so he summoned Breaker the Magical Warrior. Alas, Jason responded with Bottomless Trap Hole. Easy come, easy go. Without any more options, John ended his turn. Jason attacked once more with Sangan—the most vicious Sangan seen on the field in some time—taking another 1000 life points away from John.
John checked his set spell or trap, set one more, and ended. Jason kept up his aggressive Sangan tactics and attacked again—right into Scapegoat! After the different-colored Sheep tokens were arranged across the field, Jason continued his attack. “I attack the blue one, as a sign of disrespect!” he grinned.
“Noooo!” John protested with a mock howl, as he bid farewell to the hapless blue Sheep.
John drew and passed his turn, and Jason activated Dark Hole, ridding the field of Sheep tokens and the bloodthirsty Sangan. After taking Spirit Reaper from his deck with Sangan’s effect, he summoned it and attacked, but John responded with Sakuretsu Armor. Wishing to save his Reaper, Jason chained Book of Moon to keep it on the field.
John drew, and studied the six cards in his hand. He activated Confiscation, taking his time to choose between Jason’s Premature Burial, Goblin Elite Attack Force, and Morphing Jar. Finally, he opted for Morphing Jar, and the game went on.
Jason flip summoned Reaper, and attacked directly. John didn’t want to lose any hand advantage, so he responded with Enemy Controller, destroying the Reaper. Jason set another monster and ended. John drew and passed.
Jason flip summoned another Spirit Reaper. John wasn’t ready to welcome that one either, and activated Torrential Tribute. Jason summoned Goblin Elite Attack Force, and bang! Bottomless Trap Hole! Life point totals at this point were John 4000 and Jason 8000, and John was doing everything in his power to keep Jason away from the 4000 life points that he had left.
John set one spell or trap, which was all he had on the field, and ended. Jason activated Reinforcement of the Army, and after looking over John’s graveyard, he selected Don Zaloog and summoned it. He attacked, and John activated Enemy Controller to switch it to defense position. John might have had a low field presence in the last few turns, but he was certainly making the most of what he had.
John drew and activated Heavy Storm. Jason chained Call of the Haunted to bring back Sangan, and searched out Exiled Force for its effect. John summoned D. D. Warrior Lady, activated Smashing Ground on Don Zaloog, and attacked directly. Plenty of action and thrills in this matchup!
Jason retaliated, summoning Exiled Force and tributing it to get rid of D. D. Warrior Lady. He then activated Premature Burial to bring back his rabid little Sangan and attacked, but John responded with Call of the Haunted to revive D. D. Warrior Lady. Jason withdrew his attack, set a spell or trap, and ended. John drew, and Jason hit Call of the Haunted with Dust Tornado, sending the luckless Warrior Lady back to the graveyard. John then passed.
Jason again unleashed the fury that is Sangan, scoring a fourth direct hit on John’s life points. He set a spell or trap and ended. John set a monster, as Sangan was out for his blood, but simply ended the turn. Jason looked over John’s graveyard, then set one spell or trap and ended.
John tributed his set monster, revealing Tsukuyomi, for Airknight Parshath, and administered some payback to Jason’s Sangan. Jason searched out D. D. Warrior Lady, and John activated Swords of Revealing Light. Life point totals stood with John at 3000 and Jason at 5300.
Jason drew, checked over his hand and set spell or trap, the set one more along with a monster and ended his turn. John drew, then activated Reinforcement of the Army, bringing Mystic Swordsman LV2 to his hand. He summoned it, and attacked Jason’s set monster. Jason considered the field, then responded with Enemy Controller to turn Swordsman to defense position. John pressed the attack again with Airknight Parshath, only to run into Sakuretsu Armor.
Jason felt the need for some defensive action and activated Swords of Revealing Light. He then summoned Breaker the Magical Warrior, and broke John’s Swords, freeing his monster to attack. Breaker took a swipe at John’s facedown monster, revealing Spirit Reaper! Jason ended his turn.
John looked through his hand, then set a card. Once he hit his end phase, Jason flipped up Mystical Space Typhoon, taking out John’s set Brain Control. Jason drew, took a short break to examine the contents of both players’ graveyards, then attacked John’s set Mystic Swordsman LV2 with Breaker.
John fell back to a defensive position, setting a new monster and ending his turn. Jason continued his aggressive tactics, attacking the newly-set monster and revealing another Spirit Reaper.
Two Reapers are good enough . . . but John figured Airknight Parshath would be better, so he tributed one to bring it to the field. He attacked Jason’s Breaker, only to run headlong into Sakuretsu. Jason set one more spell or trap.
John looked at the field, then asked to see Jason’s graveyard. Then, he summoned Don Zaloog, used Snatch Steal to take control of Breaker, and attacked with both. John was now ahead on life points with 3000 against Jason’s 2100.
Jason needed a comeback, so he set one monster and ended. John drew, pulled out Nobleman of Crossout on Jason’s set monster, and attacked for game. “Sangan hit you four times!” pointed out the table judge. Losing half your life points to Sangan is hard to take, but in the end John pulled through and claimed the win.
Game 2
Both players looked through their decks, and opted to change a few cards. After some meticulous shuffling, they were ready to move on to game 2 with 40 minutes left in the round. Jason chose to go first, and the duel began.
Jason drew and looked over his hand. He immediately activated Confiscation. John hadn’t looked at his cards yet, and chanted “Come on god hand, come on god hand . . . it’s a god hand!” as he revealed Dust Tornado, Ceasefire, Enemy Controller, Brain Control, and Snatch Steal. Jason mulled it over, checked his hand, then settled on Snatch Steal. He set one spell or trap and ended.
John drew and promptly activated Reinforcement of the Army to bring out Don Zaloog. After consulting his hand, he summoned Don and attacked. Jason took it, and lost Dark Hole from his hand. John then set one spell or trap and ended his turn.
Jason followed suit, using Reinforcement to bring out his own Don Zaloog. “Don against Don. Oh well . . . at least mine is ultra rare,” John grinned. Rarity didn’t help him much, because Jason wiped it off the field with Smashing Ground to clear the way for a direct attack. John looked at the two cards in his hand, then activated Enemy Controller to switch Don to defense position. Jason set the remaining cards in his hand, and ended—but not before John activated Dust Tornado to take out his Swords of Revealing Light.
John activated Brain Control on Jason’s Don Zaloog, and attacked with both. When Jason regained his Don Zaloog, John activated Ceasefire to deal 1000 damage.
John continued to press aggressively, summoning and attacking with D. D. Assailant. Jason brought his dearly departed Don back with Premature Burial, only to lose it again to John’s next attack.
Jason then summoned Cyber Dragon and attacked D. D. Assailant. John took advantage of Jason’s empty field by summoning Exiled Force and attacking directly (shades of Sangan!) and bringing his life points down to 800.
Things were looking serious for Jason at this point. He drew, looked at his cards, and finally set one spell or trap. John kept the pressure up, and attacked with Exiled Force, only to see Jason reveal Sakuretsu Armor! Jason would live to fight another turn.
Jason then played Reinforcements of the Army, bringing out his own D. D. Assailant. He lashed out at John’s Exiled Force, but got a taste of his own medicine as John flipped up Sakuretsu Armor. John drew, looked at his hand—activated Premature Burial to bring back Don Zaloog, and attacked for the win. Jason shook his hand. “He got everything right,” he said, and both players fell into a discussion of the finer points of the match.
John Jensen moves on to the semifinals. |
