Friso was playing a Chaos Beatdown/Control hybrid skewed towards Control. Oscar played a Chaos Beatdown/Control hybrid.
Friso won the coin flip and decided to go first.
Game 1
Friso opened conservatively with a set monster and a bluff set: Harpie’s Feather Duster. Oscar played Harpie’s Feather Duster on it at the beginning of his own turn, and activated The Forceful Sentry to reveal Friso’s hand full of monsters. He attacked into a Fiber Jar and the fields were reset.
Friso was quick to play Forceful Sentry on Oscar, revealing that Oscar drew virtually nothing from Fiber Jar—he’d set two cards from his initial five. Both players set a few cards over the next turn, and Friso began building a monster base, pressing in two quick attacks for a few thousand damage. Thom finally got some defense going in the form of an attack position Reflect Bounder which Friso tried to Snatch Steal, failing due to a chained Mystical Space Typhoon. But, seeing his opponent was at a disadvantage, Friso played Fiber Jar in attack, blew through Reflect Bounder with it, and attacked with his other monsters. An unblocked series of attacks on the next turn won the game for Friso.
Game 2
Oscar opened pretty well with a Graceful Charity, but gave an audible groan as he was forced to discard some Choice cards. He set a monster and passed. Friso used Pot of Greed, Graceful Charity, and Change of Heart on the face-down card, flipping Oscar’s pilfered Spirit Reaper into attack mode. He attacked him with it, as well as a Masked Sorcerer, gaining two cards worth of advantage before his turn was out.
Oscar was desperate, but managed a decent yet risky play, summoning Witch of the Black Forest and Chaos Emperor Dragon, using the Dragon’s effect and taking a Berserk Gorilla from the Witch. He went on the offensive but was slowed down by Sinister Serpent, discarded from Friso’s hand as a result of the Dragon’s effect. However, Oscar managed to gain some board advantage, and by the time Friso almost recovered by summoning Magical Scientist, Oscar destroyed Berserk Gorilla with Ring of Destruction to deal 2000 damage and win the game.
Game 3
Friso opened strong in game 3, using Pot of Greed, Graceful Charity, and Delinquent Duo before setting two trap cards (one of which was Imperial Order) and a monster. Oscar played right into the trap, activating Harpie’s Feather Duster and watching Friso Imperial Order it.
Friso let the lock go though, in order to use Monster Reborn to gain field advantage. By the end of turn 3, he had three monsters on the field, one card in hand, and two cards down, to Oscar’s one card in hand. Oscar drew his one card, and seeing that it was no help, tossed his cards on the table in good-natured disbelief.
The two competitors shook hands and the match was concluded. Friso de Boer wins the largest Yu-Gi-Oh! tournament in history!
