Robert won the toss and chose to go first. He played a face-up copy of Giant Rat and ended his turn. Smashing Ground smashed the Rat, and then Swords of Revealing Light came down. Next, Joe’s face-down monster got hit by Nobleman of Crossout, and Magician of Faith was taken out.
On the next turn, Joe summoned Don Zaloog and attacked a face-down copy of Thunder Dragon. Robert’s Heavy Storm was met with Scapegoat, but he had D. D. Warrior Lady eat one sheep token before Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer took down another one.
Nobleman of Crossout took out Robert’s Pyramid Turtle, letting D. D. Assailant attack to the face. The Assailant attacked again on the next turn, after Mirror Force got hit by Mystical Space Typhoon. Joe’s deck appeared to have run out of tricks at that point, because he started passing a lot. However, Robert was hardly on the offensive either, as he set a few monsters in successive turns. Joe’s Blade Knight went for one of them, which turned out to be Pyramid Turtle. After going to the graveyard, the Turtle fetched Vampire Lord. Robert could start thinking about hitting back once he got out D. D. Assailant.
Joe used Enemy Controller to “borrow” Vampire Lord for an attack. He then played Scapegoat to fill his side of the field. He had Heavy Storm and played Reinforcement of the Army to fetch a monster that he couldn’t play because he had so many sheep.
Robert just played Messenger of Peace and passed. A few turns went by without either player making any decisive moves. D. D. Warrior Lady was hit with Bottomless Trap Hole, but the action didn’t really start until Premature Burial brought back Breaker the Magical Warrior for Robert. Joe summoned Mefist the Infernal General, which got the chance to attack for a fair amount of damage. After playing Lightning Vortex, Robert’s Vampire Lord got to attack directly, causing no end of trouble for Joe, who was quickly running out of traps. But he did have a copy of Snatch Steal for the Lord, and he tributed it to fetch Airknight Parshath. He also had the necessary Light and Dark monsters to summon Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning. Enemy Controller held Joe back for a turn, but things were looking bleak for Robert.
Robert recruited Sangan and played another copy of Enemy Controller to steal the Envoy. When the Envoy attacked the Airknight, Joe activated Mirror Wall, so the Envoy just wasn’t big enough. The damage was enough to finish Robert off. One way or another, Joe’s Envoy wasn’t helping anyone else out.
Joe wins Game 1.
Robert had a first-turn Pot of Greed, and then he summoned Sangan in attack position. Joe used Reinforcement of the Army to fetch D. D. Assailant. When Sangan hit the graveyard, it fetched Pyramid Turtle, kicking off Robert’s chain of increasingly impressive monsters. Unfortunately, Bottomless Trap Hole stopped that plan, though Tribe-Infecting Virus did eventually get a chance to attack. Joe played Swords of Revealing Light, to which Robert’s only response was to discard a copy of Thunder Dragon.
After some back-and-forth with summonings and speedy removals, Joe made Airknight Parshath stick by using Premature Burial. He started to do a bit of damage and drew a few cards.
Another Reinforcement of the Army from Joe fetched D. D. Assailant, and Robert played Call of the Haunted to get Tribe-Infecting Virus back. Robert’s Pyramid Turtle beat up a face-down copy of Sinister Serpent, allowing the Virus to run in directly. Joe’s Tribe-Infecting Virus took out Pyramid Turtle and created a Mexican standoff that was quickly broken. Book of Life got Pyramid Turtle back for Robert and took out the copy of Sinister Serpent in Joe’s graveyard.
When Robert summoned Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning, it was enough for Joe to concede.
Going into the final game, Joe activated a turn-1 Swords of Revealing Light. Rob’s response was to set some cards in the spell/trap zone. Mefist the Infernal General came out for Joe but was turned sideways by Enemy Controller. Robert summoned Breaker the Magical Warrior and tried to chain for its token, but Joe activated Ring of Destruction to keep his Swords of Revealing Light safe. Joe had his own copy of Breaker, which he used to attack for a big bundle of damage. He then played Metamorphosis to turn Mefist into Dark Balter the Terrible.
Robert used Scapegoat to mess up the field, but things still weren’t looking good for him. D. D. Assailant allowed Joe to beat up all of his opponent’s field and attack for the final points.
Joe advances to the Finals! |
