Round 10: Jeff Baumgartner vs. Marc Glass
Jerome McHale

Marc Glass is on fire tonight. As the only undefeated player left in the tournament, he’s now up against Jeff Baumgartner who already has a loss. Due to the volatility of the tiebreakers (specifically the fact that the person who beat him went X-3 -> drop), Jeff likely needs this match to stay in. Glass, however, wants to finish yet another Jump undefeated, and in order to do so, he’ll have to go through his opponent from the Top 4 of SJC St. Louis! Jeff is looking to score some sweet revenge in addition to making another Day 2, but he’ll have to take down Glass’ Diamond Dude Turbo to do it.

He started out well by winning the die roll and going first! He started with a set to each zone and passed back to Marc, who had a less than solid hand. Glass started off with Reasoning and Jeff called 4. Jinzo flopped off the deck. A second Reasoning followed it with Jeff calling 4 again, but this time Card Trooper dropped. Card Trooper threw Monster Gate, Diamond Dude, and Lightning Vortex into the graveyard, and Glass activated Magical Stone Excavation pitching Divine Sword — Phoenix Blade and Diamond Dude to return Reinforcement of the Army to his hand. He played Reinforcement, fetching Elemental Hero Stratos, and then summoned Stratos to fetch Destiny Hero — Malicious to his hand. He attacked Jeff’s set monster with Stratos revealing and destroying Card Trooper, and attacked directly with the rest.

Next turn, The Six Samurai — Zanji hit the field for Jeff and Smashing Ground destroyed Jinzo. He then attacked Card Trooper and ended his turn. Glass came out with Destiny Draw, dropping Malicious and Heavy Storm. Glass had Premature Burial for Jinzo and a Lightning Vortex, and that was enough to induce the scoop from Baumgartner.

Marc Glass once again takes game 1 in the blink of an eye! Jeff side decked very quickly while Marc simply shuffled up for the next game.

Once again, Jeff opted to begin the game, and he did so with Reinforcement of the Army to fetch The Six Samurai — Zanji. Zanji was summoned, and the Samurai was joined by a set spell or trap. Jeff summoned Exiled Force next turn, but ran into Mirror Force! Call of the Haunted was flipped during battle though, and Marc took 1800 anyway. Marc couldn’t get any monsters to go with his hand, so he had to take more damage next turn when Jeff summoned Card Trooper and activated its effect. Finally, Glass topdecked Reinforcement of the Army and used it to fetch Elemental Hero Stratos. Stratos fetched Malicious and Destiny Draw pitched Malicious to let Glass draw two cards.

One of them was another Malicious, however, almost ruining his rhythm for the turn. He summoned the remaining Malicious from his deck and activated Monster Gate, tributing Malicious and eventually revealing Diamond Dude. The Dude’s effect missed, and Glass activated Magical Stone Excavation, discarding a Phoenix Blade and the third Malicious to fetch back Monster Gate. He tributed Stratos to the Gate and Jeff really hoped that Dark Magician of Chaos wouldn’t hit the field. Card Trooper came off the deck and Marc activated its effect. Divine Sword — Phoenix Blade came back to Glass’ hand by removing Dasher and Stratos from play, and he then activated a second Magical Stone Excavation for Monster Gate. He tributed Card Trooper to the Gate and this time picked up Dark Magician of Chaos! The Magician brought Monster Gate back to his hand, and Glass activated it tributing Dark Magician of Chaos and revealing Diamond Dude. Diamond Dude missed again and Phoenix Blade was brought back to Glass’ hand by removing two more Warriors. Finally, Dimension Fusion hit the field bringing back Dark Magician of Chaos, Diamond Dude, Dasher, and Stratos. Stratos wiped out Jeff’s bluff and Call of the Haunted while the Magician brought back Lightning Vortex! After the dust settled, Jeff had nothing and had lost after such a strong start. Jeff Baumgartner is forced to put his faith in the tiebreakers as Marc Glass goes undefeated in the Swiss rounds of a second Shonen Jump Championship! The Top 16 will be announced soon, so make sure you stay tuned to find out makes the cut!
