Boston Shonen Jump TCG Championship Series Tournament
Metagame Staff

It’s over, and a new duelist has scored a massive upset!

After coming up from the underdog side of the bracket, Bobby Chambers of Long Island took on John Jensen. Most anticipated a crush match; Jensen has won two Shonen Jump Championships thus far, and split a third with a teammate. He’s been one of the strongest duelists this year, matched only by Emon Ghaneian in total achievements, and he had the advantage of experience.

None of that mattered. In one of the closest finals matches that we’ve ever witnessed at a Shonen Jump Championship, Chambers scored a narrow 2-1 victory over the Champion of Indianapolis and Atlanta. Sweeping the tournament without using Cyber-Stein, he went through two up-and-coming duelists before facing down the Nexus champ and claiming victory.

A plethora of different decks performed well this weekend, and the Top 8 was filled with beat-down, Monarchs, OTK, and Warrior toolbox. Despite the fact that we have a winner here today, there doesn’t seem to be a dominant deck amongst the four that made Day 2, let alone all the others that finished with respectable records. While this tournament will no doubt influence deck builders over the coming weeks, there isn’t a no-brainer deck choice, and the format finally seems to be balanced.

Now that a core four decks have been established, the real fun can begin. We officially have a burgeoning metagame, and that means that the creative, skilled deck builders out there will be setting to work to break it. At the same time, many will certainly take their cues from Bobby Chambers, and Stein might finally see a drop in play.

We’ll see how everything pans out at Shonen Jump Championship Austin in three weeks, but for now, congratulations to Bobby Chambers, the first Champion of the new format!

Day 2
It all came down to this.
A win for either duelist would put them on the map, big time.
Josh Kavalauskas has made Top 8 yet again, and he's here representing Team Ownage.
This match pits Monarchs against Warriors, and will be a telling one for the format.
John and Robert actually faced off as the last two undefeated players in round 9, so they’re not strangers to each other’s decks.
Time for the Parade of Shame!!
Day 1
For the first time in months, we have another Overdose versus Rampage feature match!
After a long hiatus Bryan Coronel has appeared at a few recent Shonen Jump Championships, and now he’s well on the comeback trail.
Adam Donahue was determined to wear a pirate hat in his feature match.
Looks like quite a crowd has already gathered, so this should be a big event.
Kyle Duncan has exploded these past couple of months, coming into his own at Shonen Jump Championship Philadelphia with a huge win that put Recruiter on the map in North America.
We’re just over halfway through the day, and after a quick walk around the top tables a few dominant pieces of tech have emerged.
We’re back with all the drama, excitement, and pointing and laughing at others that we’ve come to expect from the Scrub Brush Challenge.
If you’re looking for a new, devastating, Stein OTK build, Jose Arocho has the decklist you’re looking for.
Eaton’s performance is of note, because he was 4-0 headed into round 5, and he’s playing one of the most unique decks here today.
Omar Gaspar is running a great example of a top-notch Monarch deck.
Both of these duelists are regulars on the Shonen Jump Championship scene.
Both of these duelists were running Return decks based around Freed the Brave Wanderer, a very popular deck type today, so this one was going to be interesting!
Brice is running one of my personal top prospects for the new format and so far he’s undefeated with a 3-0 record.
Chris Evans, a long-time member of Team Hungerforce, has been a staple of the Shonen Jump Championship scene for over a year.
At the beginning of a new format there’s always somebody who thinks Dark World will be dominant. For once, those starry-eyed dreamers might be right.
After not managing to Top 8 on his home turf at Shonen Jump Championship Hamilton, Dale Bellido is back with one of the most interesting decks I’ve seen thus far here today.
I was asked just two days ago who I felt the best duelists in North America currently were.
