Baltimore Shonen Jump TCG Championship Series Tournament

It’s over, and while Teleport Dark Armed won the Day 1 battle, it’s Gladiator Beasts that have won the war!

Jermol Jupiter had one heck of a gauntlet to run here in Day 2. He started by taking on Samuel Jones, pitted against his worst matchup: Teleport Dark Armed. Jupiter edged out the win and moved on to the Top 8. There, he faced long-time Shonen Jump Championship veteran Chris Flores in a Gladiator Beast mirror match, before taking down one of the most feared competitors in Day 2: Paul Levitin.

Paul was a favorite for the win here today, armed with the Teleport Dark Armed build Lazaro Bellido designed — a deck that carried four duelists to the Top 16. But Gladiator Beast Heraklinos hit the field in two straight duels, making victory academic for Jupiter and winning him a seat in the Finals. There, he played yet another Teleport Dark Armed deck, this time piloted by Jeff Walker. Walker’s build may become the standard for the archetype, and with three copies of Psychic Commander main decked it’s fine-tuned to beat Gladiator Beasts. But Jupiter somehow overcame the odds one more time, taking a 2-0 victory and the Championship title!

While many predicted this tournament to be the end of Gladiator Beasts, it appears to be the beginning of something entirely different instead. Thanks to The Duelist Genesis, we have two amazing decks to drive competition over the coming weeks. With the broadcast debut of Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s just five days away it’s fitting that the 5D’s era would begin with a grand rivalry. Which deck reigns supreme: Gladiators or Teleport Dark Armed? That’s sure to be a point of debate as we move toward Tulsa and Seattle.

But for now, congratulations to everyone who competed at Shonen Jump Championship Baltimore, and special kudos are reserved for Jermol Jupiter, your newest Shonen Jump Champion!

Day 2
It all came down to this — Gladiator Beasts versus Teleport Dark Armed!
Paul Levitin was playing Teleport Dark Armed Dragon, while Jermol Jupiter was running Gladiator Beasts.
Two Gladiators Beast decks and two Teleport decks in the top 4. Two Gladiator vs. Teleport matches in the top 4. These matches are going to decide which deck is the more dominant or if they're on entirely even playing ground.
Gladiator Beast vs. Gladiator Beast. We're all familiar with this matchup, but few of us expected so many Gladiators to trump the Teleport decks on day 2.
Jon Mak is a member of Team AZN Carnage. He’s up against Jeff Walker, taking Gladiator Beasts against Walker’s Teleport Dark Armed deck.
Synchros vs. Gladiators. Friend vs. friend. Corn vs. Flores. This is a match that will likely set the tone for the upcoming months in Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG dueling.
Jeff Walker is only 14 years old, and traveled here from New Jersey this weekend to compete with Teleport Dark Armed! His opponent was almost twice his age — 25 year-old Bryon Mines, the only Lightsworn player in Day 2.
The time has come!
Day 1
Nine rounds have come and gone here in Baltimore, and after one of the most anticipated tournaments of all time, it’s clear that a changing of the guard is taking place.
The winner here would clinch a seat in the festivities tomorrow, while the loser would have to hope for amazing tiebreakers.
Both of these competitors had 5-2 records here today, so while I wasn’t sure that this matchup was totally relevant to the final standings of Day 2, I wanted to cover it for the sake of the matchup.
Hector Heras is a repeat Day 2 Shonen Jump alum, and today he’s running a particularly fast version of Teleport Dark Armed, but the real reason this feature match is taking place is his opponent: Bryon Mines is 6-0 with Lightsworn, packing innovative tech like Quillbolt Hedgehog.
Both competitors were undefeated, and neither was running a deck we’d seen in action yet here today.
Matt Peddle is tearin’ ‘em up today, and he’s packing what’s probably my favorite Lightsworn deck of all time.
If you’ve been reading the coverage you’ve already heard all about Dale Bellido’s Teleport Dark Armed deck, but I didn’t get the chance to deck profile Anthony Kelly yet.
We’ve seen Teleport Dark Armed walk all over Gladiator Beasts — will Lightsworn do the same?
Pretty much everyone from Canada is playing the same Teleport Dark Armed variant.
Shonen Jump Champion Paul Lyn secured his reputation as one of the most creative competitive duelists in the game ages ago at Shonen Jump Championship Orlando, when he won his SJC title with the Ancient Gear OTK deck he called “Rusty Bucket O’ Bolts.”
Jason Holloway is playing one of the most daring and innovative decks present here today, and if he can make it all the way to Day 2, he’ll bring a new, totally unforeseen deck into the competitive fold.
Both of these competitors are Shonen Jump Champions, and each is a huge innovator for his respective archetype.
Cesar Gonzalez is coming off three Day 2 showings with Dark Armed Dragon and, as the North America metagame seems to be shifting back to Dark Armed-centric strategies augmented by Synchros, he is in his element.
Jerome McHale may win the prize for strangest looking deck here this weekend.
The 5D’s era begins today, right here in Baltimore!
