Round 9: Jerry Wang vs. Matt Connors |

Both players were at risk in this match, each possibly on the bubble for Day 2. Jerry Wang, star player for Team Overdose, was seated at fifth place, but had been paired down against the seventeenth-place Matt Connors. A win for Wang would lock his spot in the Top 8. A loss would likely knock him out of contention, while pushing Connors to a possible Top 8 finish. Because of the odd pairing, though, nothing was for sure, and it was this confusion that peppered the minds of both duelists as they shuffled their decks.
Connors opened the first duel with a set to each zone, and was met by two set spells and traps. He flip summoned Exarion Universe a turn later and attacked directly with it. Wang had no answer, but flipped Mystical Space Typhoon in the end phase to rob Connors of Enemy Controller.
Wang set another spell or trap, then a monster, and passed. Connors drew into Pot of Greed, played it, and then played Graceful Charity. He summoned D. D. Warrior Lady and attempted to attack the face down monster with it, but was stopped by Book of Moon.
“Attack with Exarion.”
“Use its effect?” asked Wang. Connors refused.
It was a mistake, as the set monster was Spirit Reaper. Next turn it was tributed for Airknight Parshath. Airknight attacked, Book of Moon popped up on Connor’s side of the field to turn it face down, and Metamorphosis turned it into Dark Balter the Terrible. Connors set a card and passed. Dark Balter attacked but was destroyed by Book of Moon, and Wang activated Swords of Revealing Light. The match flew by at a swift pace.
Nobleman of Crossout hit the field on Connors’s side, and removed Magician of Faith from Wang’s field. Wang had Swords of Revealing Light out, though, and Connors continued playing defensively and setting monsters. A turn later Wang was harassing Connors with Breaker the Magical Warrior and Airknight Parshath, brought back from the grave with Premature Burial.
Swords of Revealing Light held back Connors for one more turn, so he set two more cards to his spell and trap zone. Airknight attacked anyways, smacking D. D. Warrior Lady and getting removed but earning Wang a draw. He got Pot of Greed for his trouble, and played it immediately. “That was a very good Airknight.”
Connors was ready to press an offensive though: once Wang set a monster and passed Connors drew, tributed his Exarion for Jinzo, and brought out Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning. Moments later Wang had no monsters and it was 1000 to 5500 in Connors’s favor. A turn later it was game. Wang had nothing to set that could save him.
Wang opened, but dropped a card to the field by mistake. “You see that?”
“No.”
“Good!” He activated Delinquent Duo and plucked Sinister Serpent from Connors’s hand. He winced. “I am so good at this! I’m almost the best.” He laughed at himself while Connor discarded Blade Knight.
Next turn, Connors swung with D. D. Assailant. Its blade bounced almost harmlessly off of a Sheep. Next turn Sangan and D. D. Assailant consumed a Sheep each, but Wang took the Assailant with Snatch Steal and reamed the Sangan with it on his next turn.
Connors set his freshly-pulled Sinister Serpent, used Metamorphosis on it, and brought up Thousand-Eyes Restrict. Wang immediately used Book of Moon on it though, turning it face down. He drew for his turn, sent D. D. Assailant into battle, and watched it get destroyed by Mirror Force.
The following few turns were a flurry of Thousand-Eyes Restrict inhalations, with Connors repeatedly using Thousand-Eyes’s effect with Tsukuyomi. He activated Wave-Motion Cannon and the timer started running.
After two turns of blindingly fast play, Wang summoned Mobius the Frost Monarch to remove the Wave-Motion from the field. He used Nobleman of Crossout to remove Sinister Serpent from play, leaving Connors with a clear board, and then attacked with Mobius. A turn later though Connors took the Mobius with Brain Control, and tributed it for Airknight Parshath. Airknight attacked once, but Wang fired back on his following turn with Tribe-Infecting Virus: the game was incredibly fast, and the players occasionally just showed eachother cards the other expected them to have instead of playing things out fully.
Eventually it came down to Jerry with two Sheep, a defense position Breaker the Magical Warrior, and one set spell or trap to Connors’s one spell or trap. Wang had two cards in hand to Connors 3, but Connors summoned Tribe-Infecting Virus and then discarded to blow away the Sheep. It then attacked Breaker, and play passed to Wang.
Wang set a monster and a spell before passing back. Connors summoned Tsukuyomi, flipped down Tribe-Infecting Virus, flip summoned it again, and attacked the set monster with Tsukuyomi: Wang lost his Sinister Serpent in battle. Tribe-Infecting Virus then attacked directly, and the life point totals were 2600 to 3500.
Wang again set his Sinister Serpent, but next turn Connors had it in the bag. Asura Priest was summoned, it smashed the face down Serpent, and Tribe-Infecting Virus attacked directly. With two effect monsters left on the field, Connors flipped Ceasefire, dealing the final 1000 damage he needed to win the game and the match!
Independent player Matt Connors defeats Team Overdose powerhouse Jerry Wang, likely stealing the fifth-place Wang’s Top 8 slot! |
