Power of the Duelist Preview: Destiny Hero - Double Dude
Matt Peddle

Whenever you take a dive into reading Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG strategy, you'll come across the idea of "floater" cards. "Floaters" are monsters whose eventual destruction has already been balanced out. That is to say, they've cost the opponent a card or earned you an extra one, and thus, their destruction doesn't represent a loss to you in the long run. A good example is Dekoichi the Battlechanted Locomotive after it's been flipped. Since it's drawn you one card, if your opponent summons Gemini Elf to attack Dekoichi, the destroyed Dekoichi has been replaced with the one extra card you drew.

Floater monsters are extremely valuable, and as such, they’re often played in maximum numbers. Zaborg the Thunder Monarch, Chaos Sorcerer, and Dekoichi the Battlechanted Locomotive are examples of monsters that become floaters very quickly. As such, you see them often taking up to nine slots in any given deck. And instant floaters are even stronger. The power of cards like Sangan and Witch of the Black Forest was always so much greater than the power of Shining Angel and Mystic Tomato. Though you could argue that Mystic Tomato has a stronger effect than Sangan because it summons the monster right out to the field, there’s no doubt that staring down a fearsome Sangan is usually a whole lot scarier than having to deal with an overgrown Tomato. Because its effect doesn't have a restriction on how it must be destroyed, it effect is more likely to resolve, which can make it a nightmare to deal with.

You probably know where I'm going with this by now, and I'd just be a tease if I left you in the dark much longer. So, I present to you:

Destiny Hero - Double Dude

Dark/Warrior

Level 6

1000/1000

This card cannot be special summoned. This card can attack twice during the same battle phase. If this card is destroyed, you can special summon 2 "Double Dude Tokens" (Warrior-type/DARK/Level 4/ATK 1000/DEF 1000) during your next standby phase.

Destiny Hero - Double Dude gives everyone a few mixed emotions. At first glance, you'll see it lacks the strength and defensive capabilities you've come to love from your level 6 monsters. Sporting only 1000 points on both ends, Double Dude definitely comes up short. Secondly, you'll notice that it can't be special summoned. This hurts more than anything else. Most would hope to use their Last Will and Mystic Tomato cards to get this guy on the field. Unfortunately, you'll have to work a little harder than that.

So what do you get for your troubles? You get a monster that’s able to attack twice, and drops down as an instant floater. This can be quite troubling to your opponent, who won’t want to deal with a potential 2000 damage every turn. However, destroying Double Dude only doubles the problems. Once destroyed, it turns into a pair of 1000/1000 tokens, and again, your opponent must deal with the monsters or take 2000 damage.

How can we prevent our opponents from dealing with it? Throw D - Shield into the mix, and your opponent can't attack the Double Dude to destroy it. This forces your opponent to use a monster removal card or effect to deal with a seemingly unthreatening dude. Once he or she does, your nasty tokens step in and make for a great big headache.

And of course, there's no restriction on Double Dude when sacrificing its tokens for a tribute monster. This does a great deal for a deck that wishes to pack multiple tribute monsters, or monsters that cost two tributes to play. In addition, bringing out one copy of Double Dude greatly increases the playability of any other Double Dudes you might have in your hand. Sound situational? Just play a couple Generation Shift cards, and watch as your opponent struggles to deal with the endless loops of Double Dudes thrown at him or her.

The combos with Double Dude don't end there, though. Command Knight boosts its ATK up to 1400. While this may not sound too strong, if you combine Destiny Hero - Double Dude with Last Will and Inferno Reckless Summon, and special summon all three Command Knight cards when you tribute for Double Dude, you now have a whopping 11600 ATK on your side of the field. Any opponent with a face-up Spirit Reaper will be a whole lot of trouble, regardless of his or her special summons.

I'm sure I haven't even broken the ice with the possibilities for Destiny Hero - Double Dude. Unbeknownst to the public, there's a spicy new field card being released right along with it that makes its inability to be special summoned pretty insignificant. It will be previewed next week, so keep your eye open for it.

I hope you have fun with Destiny Hero - Double Dude. The combos can get pretty crazy, but are surprisingly achievable—and Double Dude is definitely a playable monster on its own, with the potential to drive your opponents crazy!
