Finals: Bryan Coronel vs. Brian Long
Jason Grabher-Meyer

It came down to this: Hunger Force in its first Shonen Jump Championship finals showing versus the powerhouse of Team Overdose. It was Brian versus Bryan, and this final match would decide which man, and which team, would claim their own Des Volstgalph.

“Use Sheep tokens!” yelled Kris Perovic, whose use of a die to keep track of his tokens had caused a poor play that lost him the semis against Coronel minutes before.

Long won the roll and chose to open the first duel. He repeated one of his more common openings of the day, setting one spell or trap and passing. Coronel set two spells or traps, but one, Bottomless Trap Hole, was blown away immediately by the set Mystical Space Typhoon. Long set a card to each zone, Coronel set one more, and passed. Long flipped his set Heavy Storm and Coronel chained Scapegoat, but Long had the Exarion Universe tech! He flip summoned it, attacked a Sheep token, and set another monster.

Coronel set one spell or trap and passed. Long hit him with Delinquent Duo and got his only monster, which was Tribe-Infecting Virus. Moments later he was down to nothing, as Magician of Faith flipped to Duo him again. Coronel had virtually nothing and was being pounded.

Graceful Charity kept the options coming on Long’s side of the table and he kept summoning. He brought down Tsukuyomi, flipped Magician of Faith face down, and then removed a light and a Dark for Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning. It attacked the last Sheep token but was intercepted by Sakuretsu Armor, and Long flipped Book of Moon to save it. Exarion attacked the last Sheep token, Coronel topdecked Jinzo, and that was enough for him to scoop for the first duel.

Coronel opened the second duel with a set monster, then took a moment to think before setting two cards to his spell and trap zone. Long activated Heavy Storm, but Coronel chained Scapegoat: he again lost Bottomless Trap Hole. Long then activated Graceful Charity, summoned Exarion Universe, and punched through a Sheep token to deal some piercing damage. He set one card to his spell and trap zone and passed.

Metamorphosis exchanged one of Coronel’s Sheep tokens for Thousand-Eyes Restrict, but Ring of Destruction blew it away before it could absorb Exarion and attack. Coronel activated Graceful Charity, discarded, and then summoned Sangan. He attacked directly before setting his last two cards to his spell and trap zone.

Long summoned Breaker the Magical Warrior, blew away Coronel’s set Nobleman of Crossout, and did not attack. He set two spell or traps, passed, Coronel drew and set another spell or trap, passed, turned Sangan to defense, and blew away the Breaker with Ring of Destruction. A turn later Long kept up the pressure though, bringing out Airknight Parshath. Coronel took it with Snatch Steal, but Sakuretsu Armor destroyed it. Long and Coronel were both now reduced to topdecking.

Long set a card to his spell and trap zone, leaving one card in each zone and none in his hand. Coronel drew, played Premature Burial to bring up Exarion Universe, and pondered his next move. The life point totals were 2300 to 4400, with Long leading. Exarion attacked the face down, Coronel declined to use its effect, and Long flipped Mirror Force. It destroyed Sangan and Exarion, and Coronel took Sinister Serpent with its effect. He set it, passed, Long drew, set a monster, passed, and play was back to Coronel.

He set one more spell or trap and flip summoned Sinister Serpent to use Torrential Tribute. Long’s face down was Sangan, and it got him Injection Fairy Lily. Coronel set his remaining spell or trap and passed. Next turn, Long summoned the Fairy and attacked.

Coronel examined his face down spells and traps, but neither would stop the attack. Long paid for Lily’s effect, and that was the game. Brian Long of Team Hunger Force wins Shonen Jump Championship Boston!
