One of the foremost things on any duelist's mind is how to win a duel. Let's have a review of all of the win conditions that can arise during a Yu-Gi-Oh! duel—there are actually quite a few different ways to win the game, and in this article we will review them all, from life point wins, to decking, to card effect wins.
The first, most obvious, and most common way to win is by reducing your opponent's life points to 0. Whether you opt for monster attacks and effects or spell and trap card effects, the moment your opponent's life points reach 0, you win. It's important to know all the phases of gameplay and to know when battle damage and card effects resolve so that you can track life point status accurately. For instance, say your opponent has no monster cards on the field, one set spell or trap card, and 1000 life points remaining. It is your battle phase, so you declare an attack with a Gemini Elf. In response to the attack, your opponent activates Enchanted Javelin. He or she will lose 1900 life points from the attack before gaining 1900 life points from Enchanted Javelin, so he or she will lose due to having 0 life points.
Now then, while we're on the subject of life points . . . if both duelists reach 0 life points at the same time, the duel is considered a draw, and nobody wins. Draws can be triggered deliberately by several different card effects, such as activating Ring of Destruction on Goblin Attack Force when both players are under 2300 life points, or activating Self-Destruct Button when the conditions for its activation have been met. The second way to win is by decking your opponent. A duelist must have a card to draw at the beginning of his or her turn; if a duelist cannot draw a card because there are no cards in his or her deck, then he or she loses the game. A duelist must also be able to draw a card if required to draw due to a card effect, such as Card Destruction or Cyber Jar. If your opponent has no cards to draw when a card effect requires him or her to draw, then you win. Remember, a duelist does not lose due to decking on the turn in which he or she draws the last card—he or she loses at the beginning of the next turn. This means that card combos like Butterfly Dagger - Elma, Gearfried The Iron Knight, and Royal Magical Library, with which an opponent draws his or her entire deck to search for certain cards, do not cause a game loss on that turn. It is not until that duelist begins his or her following turn that a loss due to decking occurs. This will disappoint many a duelist who goes up against a Butterfly Dagger - Exodia deck.
Speaking of Exodia, there is another category of win conditions: win conditions due to card effects. Originally, the only card effect win was the Exodia win, but now there are several others, and we're going to review them all in this section.
First off—Exodia. An Exodia win occurs when a player holds all five pieces of Exodia—Exodia The Forbidden One, The Right Arm Of The Forbidden One, The Left Arm of the Forbidden One, The Right Leg of the Forbidden One, and The Left Leg Of the Forbidden One—in his or her hand at once. A duelist whose hand contains those five cards can declare an automatic victory, whether it is his or her turn or the opponent's turn.
Another card effect win condition is the Destiny Board win. A Destiny Board win works like this. A duelist must first activate the trap card Destiny Board. Then, at the end of each of the opponent's turns, as long as Destiny Board is on its controller's side of the field, he or she can search through his or her hand or deck, take one Spirit Message I, N, A, or L, and place it in order on his or her side of the field. Once that duelist has Destiny Board and Spirit Message I, N, A, and L on the field, he or she is declared the winner. If any of these cards are destroyed or removed from the field, however (Heavy Storm, Mystical Space Typhoon, and Giant Trunade all accomplish this), all the other cards are immediately sent to the graveyard. If Jinzo is on the field, Destiny Board's effect stops working, and the Spirit Message cards cannot be activated. Spirit Message cards can only be activated with Destiny Board's effect—you cannot activate them during your main phases, like normal spell cards, and they cannot be set.
Final Countdown is another popular card effect win, since once it is activated and resolved, it cannot be stopped by another card effect. A duelist activates the spell card, paying 2000 life points, and then the countdown begins. After twenty end phases (from the turns of both the duelist activating the card and his or her opponent), the duelist who played the Final Countdown is declared the winner. The only way to stop a Final Countdown win is to defeat the duelist who activated the card within ten turns.
The final card effect win condition is Last Turn. Last Turn is a trap card that can only be activated when a duelist has 1000 life points or less remaining. The duelist activating the card chooses one monster on his or her side of the field, and all remaining cards on both sides of the field and in both players' hands are sent to their respective graveyards. His or her opponent must then special summon one monster from his or her deck in face up attack position, and attack the monster on the duelist's side of the field. Battle damage to life points is treated as 0, and the duelist whose monster remains alone on the field during the end phase is declared the winner. Jowgen the Spiritualist is a popular card to combo with Last Turn, since it prevents an opponent from special summoning a monster, resulting in an automatic win. There you have it—a rundown of all the win conditions in the game. Life point wins are the most common, but now that you are familiar with all the others, perhaps you might like to try out new deck ideas and card strategies. As new sets come out, new win effects might be introduced, and new cards to work into older effect-win strategies will emerge. Now that you know all the win conditions, get on out there and win!
