Finals: Gus Reyez vs. Patrick Smith
Jason Grabher-Meyer

Patrick Smith is from Fairborn, Ohio, and is a student. Gus Reyez is from Chicago, and is also a student. He claims to surf Lake Michigan on a regular basis.

Smith opened with two set spells or traps and a set D. D. Assailant. Breaker the Magical Warrior broke Sakuretsu Armor on Reyez’s turn, and Breaker attacked with no result. Smith retaliated with Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer, attacking first with the Assailant and then Kycoo. However, Kycoo was destroyed by Ring of Destruction before the attack’s resolution, leaving each duelist virtually even, but with Smith more committed to the field.

Reyez set his entire hand and activated Mirage of Nightmare. He drew on Smith’s turn. Smith tried to take out a Reflect Bounder under Reyez’s control by Enemy Controllering it into defense, but Sakuretsu Armor took out the Assailant before it could destroy the Bounder.

Mirage of Nightmare was destroyed by Mystical Space Typhoon, giving Reyez a marked advantage. It didn’t last long, as Smith’s Fiber Jar flipped and reset the fields on his own turn. “I’ll make sure I get a free hit off of that,” he said, as he attacked with a newly summoned D. D. Assailant. He set three spells or traps and passed.

Reyez summoned Sinister Serpent and Creature Swapped it to Smith. He attempted to attack, but was met with a Sakuretsu Armor. Two turns later Reyez was at a disadvantage, but was fending off Smith with sheep. He Monster Gated a token for a copy of The Creator Incarnate. He attacked his Sinister and passed.

Smashing Ground took out the Incarnate, and D. D. Warrior Lady smacked a sheep, leaving just one. Smith looked to press his advantage, but ate a Torrential Tribute. Two turns later, Reyez was directly attacking against a near-empty board with Jinzo. Smith bailed himself out by using Magical Scientist for Thousand-Eyes Restrict. Mirage of Nightmare managed to fetch him a copy of Blade Knight. He attacked with it, but Enemy Controller put it in defense position.

Reyez brought out Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning, but Torrential Tribute laid it low. Smith took a distinct advantage when he got off an Emergency Provisions on his own Mirage, but the hand counts were even a turn later.

Reyez was under the gun, but set a copy of Morphing Jar. It didn’t matter though, as Ring of Destruction won the game for Smith a turn later.

Game Win: Patrick Smith

Game Two

Reyez opened with one face-down monster and one face-down spell or trap. Blade Knight attacked the monster, which was a D. D. Warrior Lady, but did nothing.

Reyez summoned Breaker and Smith played Torrential Tribute. “Oh, no, Soldier!” he jested. Reyez actually had the soldier, but opted not to summon him that turn for some reason.

He did summon him on the next turn, and used the Soldier’s effect to remove Smith’s face down Sinister Serpent. Smith Snatch Steal’d the Soldier, summoned a D. D. Assailant, played Mystical Space Typhoon on Reyez’s Swords of Revealing Light that was played last turn, and attacked for a big chunk of direct damage.

Reyez played Snatch Steal to get it back, summoned D. D. Warrior Lady, attacked with the Warrior Lady to remove the Assailant, and swung directly with the Soldier. Once again, Smith used Magical Scientist to summon Thousand-Eyes Restrict, in order to suck up the Soldier and destroy it. Reyez didn’t do much, but did set a Call of the Haunted. He brought the Soldier back next turn to protect himself, but Smith once again used Thousand-Eyes Restrict to destroy it during main phase 2.

Reyez summoned Sinister Serpent and Creature Swapped, getting Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer. He used it to attack the Scientist, putting Smith on the defensive. Reyez summoned Mobius the Frost Monarch next turn and attacked his Sinister Serpent. He summoned the Serpent another turn later, and attacked with it after losing his Mobius to a defense-position D. D. Warrior Lady.

Breaker hit the field on Smith’s side, but was quickly hit by Sakuretsu Armor as he went after Sinister Serpent. The fields were locked for another turn, but Smith played a Fiber Jar to reset the fields.

Smith used the open field to get a shot in with Blade Knight, but was quickly repulsed by a heavy defense from Reyez. Reyez Fiber Jar’d next turn.

Smith set two spells or traps. Reyez Heavy Stormed him, but he responded by chaining Scapegoat and Emergency Provisions. Reyez summoned Blade Knight and smacked a sheep. Smith wrecked it with Tribe-Infecting Virus on the next turn, used Premature Burial to bring back the Kycoo he sacked for the Virus, attacked directly with it, and then walked Kycoo straight into a Sakuretsu Armor. It didn’t matter though, as next turn he dropped Breaker to wipe Reyez’s spell and trap zone. He attacked with it and with the Tribe-Infecting Virus, and that was all he needed to win the game, the match, and the tournament.

Patrick Smith is the winner of the Columbus Shonen Jump TCG Championship Series Tournament!
