Day 1 of the 2007 European Championships is over, and the top three players going into tomorrow are all Italian! Michael Marzoli, Filippo Rossi, and Walter Kratochvil (two of whom we featured today), have done their country proud by putting in impressive Day 1 showings here in Turin.
Big names progressing to Day 2 include former Belgian Champions Guy Israel and Wim Eliano, reigning German Champion Vittorio Wiktor, the United Kingdom’s Duncan Tang, reigning European Champion Vincent Wielandt, and World Champion Dario Longo!
Royal Decree has proven to be a deciding card in many matches, and most of the successful duelists today were running Destiny Hero variants. With that said, there were still a few surprises, not the least of which was sixth seed Abelghani Finti’s Winged Rhynos deck. Awesome stuff.
Also of note are the number of fan-favorite players who won’t be appearing tomorrow. Adrian Madaj, Joe Whittaker, Carlo Palazzo, and several others found themselves on the wrong side of Fortune’s wheel this afternoon, while other duelists like James Pennicott, Irish Champion Brian Dunne, and Finlandian Champion Alexander Trivedi barely hang on to Top 8 hopes with 4-3 records.
Head on back tomorrow for more Swiss rounds, and then get ready for the final Top 8 playoffs! The 2007 European Championships are only halfway done, and tomorrow we’ll see who goes home, and who goes to San Diego for the World Championships!
