It was Hunger Force versus Hunger Force and Overdose versus Overdose in the semifinals!
Hunger Force’s Brent Yetter took on teammate Brian Long, and as both shuffled they exchanged some pleasantries. Still, this clearly wouldn’t be a joke match. Long won the roll and opted to open the first game.
He did so with a single set card to his spell and trap zone. Yetter pressed immediately with a D. D. Assailant, but caught nothing but Sheep, and one went down. He set one spell or trap, passed, Long set a spell or trap, passed, and D. D. Assailant attacked another Sheep token.
Long summoned Tribe-Infecting Virus, and discarded Airknight Parshath to blow away the D. D. Assailant. He then used Premature Burial to bring back Airknight: Yetter flipped Scapegoat when attacked, but the Tribe-Infecting Virus took down one Sheep while Airknight pierced clean through a second, netting Long 1900 damage and a free draw. Before he ended his turn he called Beasts with Tribe-Infecting Virus’s effect and blew away the four Sheep that he and Yetter had on the field.
Yetter had been holding a Graceful Charity, and though he couldn’t draw into a Sinister Serpent or anything else that would give him card advantage, he was now forced to use it—it was his 6100 life points to 7200, and he had no field. He summoned Breaker the Magical Warrior, used its token to blow away Premature Burial and send Airknight Parshath to the graveyard, and then rammed Tribe-Infecting Virus to clear the field of monsters. He set two cards to his spell and trap zone and passed.
Exarion Universe hit the field though, and Long attacked directly. Next turn Yetter summoned Tribe-Infecting Virus and used his right to priority to activate its effect, but Long flipped Torrential Tribute in response. Yetter activated Premature Burial though, and brought up the Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer that he’d discarded with Graceful Charity earlier. Kycoo attacked unopposed. Control passed to Long, and he set a monster and passed right back. Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer swung into Long’s set Magician of Faith, he took back Pot of Greed, Yetter set a monster, and Long used Pot yet again. He summoned D. D. Assailant, sent it into the face down monster that Yetter had set, and revealed it as Morphing Jar.
Both players discarded and took their five cards.
A turn later, D. D. Assailant’s effect and a Sakuretsu Armor of Long’s resulted in all monsters again being removed from the field. Yetter set a monster and another spell or trap (leaving him with one again), Long played Graceful Charity, and the game was 3900 to 5300 in Long’s favor. He summoned Asura Priest, used Nobleman of Crossout to remove Yetter’s face down Sinister Serpent from play, and attacked directly. It was 2200 to 5300 now.
Yetter did nothing but set another spell or trap. Long fired back with Heavy Storm, but Scapegoat was chained. “Do the trick!” yelled a bystander: Yetter used four poker chips for Sheep tokens and often threw them onto the table in one swift motion. He didn’t do the trick this time.
Next turn, Asura Priest killed off all the sheep. Long brought back Heavy Storm again with a Magician of Faith, and Scapegoat was again chained. He’d already set one monster, so he set one spell or trap and passed.
Heavy Storm now hit Yetter’s side of the field, and Long chained Ring of Destruction to blow away one Sheep. Yetter used Nobleman of Crossout to remove the face down monster from play. Long had set Asura Priest, and now Yetter didn’t need to worry about it! Long drew, set one spell or trap, and passed. Yetter set one as well, and Mystical Space Typhoon hit it. He summoned D. D. Warrior Lady, attacked directly, and passed back. Long had only two cards in hand and none on his field.
But he drew, and took the D. D. Warrior Lady with Snatch Steal! His last two cards then finished the game—Breaker the Magical Warrior was discarded for Lightning Vortex, the last of Yetter’s Sheep burst into a blaze of wool and hooves, and Yetter’s own D. D. Warrior Lady attacked him to end the first duel!
Brian Long wins game 1!
Yetter again opened, and played Graceful Charity. He then played Pot of Greed, followed by Delinquent Duo—a stunning three cards of advantage on turn 1. He set a monster, set a card to his spell and trap zone, and then passed.
Long topdecked Pot of Greed, used it immediately, played Nobleman of Crossout to remove Yetter’s set Legendary Jujitsu Master from play, and then set a card to each of his zones. Yetter drew, played Mystical Space Typhoon, hit Scapegoat, and watched it chain and activate. He passed play to Long, Long flipped Magician of Faith, took back Pot of Greed, used it again, and then used another Nobleman of Crossout – it removed Yetter’s face down Magician of Faith of from play. Long’s Magician attacked directly, he set one spell or trap, and passed.
Yetter just kept setting things, going with another set monster and passing right back. Long drew, turned Magician of Faith to defense position, and also passed. Yetter drew, set a card to each of his zones, then set a third card to his spell and trap zone. He seemed dangerously overcommited to the field.
But then he set one more monster, flipped Morphing Jar, and it all paid off. The Jar attacked Long’s Magician and Yetter had a huge advantage: three monsters, three set spell and trap cards, and five in-hand cards to Long’s five cards in-hand, single spell or trap, and lone Sheep token.
Long looked for an equalizer, and summoned Sangan to attack Morphing Jar. The attck went off without a hitch and he ended his turn. Yetter flipped the Sangan face down with Book of Moon, removed it with Nobleman of Crossout, flip summoned Spirit Reaper, normal summoned Asura Priest, and attempted to attack all the Sheep tokens.
Sakuretsu Armor stopped the play, getting rid of Asura Priest! Reaper poked one Sheep token and Yetter was subdued, at least for the turn. Long drew and played Different Dimension Capsule—he set Snatch Steal out of play with it and passed.
Yetter took down two Sheep with Reaper and Exiled Force, and a turn later, he had Spirit Reaper, Exiled Force, and Breaker the Magical Warrior to Long’s Sinister Serpent and one Sheep. Yetter flipped Ceasefire to dish out 2000 damage in direct burn. He then special summoned Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning, tributed for Airknight Parshath and moved into battle.
Airknight took out the Sheep, Soldier hit the Serpent and then attacked again, and the game was over!
The match stood at one to one.
Long opened the game with Delinquent Duo, and discarded Yetter’s Mirror Force! He ditched an Exiled Force for his choice, and Long then set a card to each of his zones. Yetter matched him with a card to each part of the field, then passed back.
Long had again been given a chance to flip Magician of Faith in the early game, and did so: he used Delinquent Duo again. He summoned Sinister Serpent, played Nobleman of Crossout, and once more removed Legendary Jujitsu Master from the game!
Yetter set a spell or trap and passed. Long summoned Injection Fairy Lily, but his opponent flipped Torrential Tribute! Yetter passed, with nothing to play, and a turn later Long was poking him with Serpent again.
Premature Burial got Yetter the Airknight Parshath that he had discarded off of the second Delinquent Duo, but Long used Ring of Destruction once it hit the field. He attacked Yetter with Tribe-Infecting Virus and Serpent, and was really dominating the game: it was 4100 to 5700, but Long had commanding control over the field.
Yetter summoned Tsukuyomi, leaving only Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning in his hand. Tsukuyomi turned Tribe-Infecting Virus face down, attacked it, and bounced back to Yetter’s hand. Serpent again attacked directly, and Yetter set a monster.
The Serpent turned into Thousand-Eyes Restrict a turn later thanks to Metamorphosis, and Thousand-Eyes quickly sucked up Yetter’s face down. Long had three cards remaining in his hand and the life point totals were 3800 to 5700. Yetter flipped Dust Tornado, destroying Long’s Mirror Force, and then summoned Tsukuyomi again. It turned Thousand-Eyes Restrict face down, and Yetter then used that Delinquent Duo. He removed a Light and a Dark, brought out Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning, and sent it into the Thousand-Eyes Restrict.
It hit the Thousand-Eyes and destroyed it before attempting to attack directly. But Long flipped Scapegoat, and managed to protect himself with Sheep shields. Long drew, brought out his own Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning, removed Yetter’s from play, and passed. Yetter needed something big to stay in the match!
He set Tsukuyomi and a spell or trap. Long removed Tsukuyomi from play with Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning’s effect and shook his head. He summoned Tsukuyomi, turned Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning face down to remove its effect that prevented it from attacking, and then flip summoned it! He swung at Yetter’s life points, eyed Yetter’s last spell or trap, and Yetter revealed it.
It was Ring of Destruction! Yetter was at 2800 life points, and thus had no way of saving himself. Brian Long moves on to the finals! |
