Reader Challenge Six: Night of the Living Decks
Jason Grabher-Meyer and Julia Hedberg

Greetings to all of this week’s challengers! We’ve got good news, and we’ve got bad news. The challenges have become immensely popular. This means that a lot of you like to participate, and that makes Metagame.com happy. That’s good news! What’s the bad? Well, instead of only one scheming brain coming up with each deck conundrum, there are now two. That’s right! I, Julia Hedberg, have joined the contest team to help issue a new challenge every week. If you think Jason comes up with some crazy ideas on his own, just wait and see what surfaces in the weeks to come. Nothing gets you brainstorming like sitting up all night, eating junk food, and digging through card stashes. So, on to the first collaborative challenge!

With Halloween just past, odds are good that many of you have recently had zombies on the brain. Jason and I decided to pay homage to the holiday with a little contest called “Night of the Living Decks.” Here are the details for this week’s contest. Time to take your brain out of the candy bag and put it to work!

The goal this week is to get as many points as you can by summoning Goblins, Witches, Zombies, and Ghosts. A monster counts as one of these if the word “Goblin,” “Witch,” “Zombie,” or “Ghost” appears in the card name. Of course, the contest would be much, much too easy if we left it at that, so there’s some fine print.

You must summon the monsters in a specific order: Goblin, then Witch, then Zombie, then Ghost. Lather, rinse, repeat. You can summon as many per turn as you want, but they have to follow that sequence. The sequence does not reset at the end of the turn, so if the last monster you summon on turn 1 is a Witch, you’ll have to summon a Zombie first on turn 2.

You’ll earn points as follows. The first time you summon a correct monster in the correct order, you’ll get 2 points. When you summon a card (in the correct order) of the same name as one you have already summoned, you’ll get 1 point. (For example, you summon Blindly Loyal Goblin first. You get 2 points. If you summon Blindly Loyal Goblin again on turn 4 (after a Ghost and before a Witch), you get 1 point.) You can summon monsters that aren’t Goblins, Witches, Zombies, or Ghosts, but they won’t count towards your point total.

Some cards are excluded from the contest: Butterfly Dagger - Elma, Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning, Heart of the Underdog, Gearfried the Iron Knight, and Fiber Jar. This contest is in the Traditional format.

Your opponent will summon a 1900 ATK monster on turn 1 and then obligingly sit there and do nothing. If only all opponents were so cooperative. If your opponent is faced with a choice (Painful Choice or another similar effect), you may direct that choice. You can’t, however, rely on your opponent to have specific cards.

Your deck must be at least 40 cards, and you may determine what you draw and in what order.

If you go below 0 life points, lose, or draw the game by any other effect, you lose the challenge!

There are no infinite loops in Yu-Gi-Oh!. If you have an effect that loops, you must choose and state a specific number of repeats.

You will go first, and the challenge ends in the end phase of your fourth turn.

We’re looking forward to seeing your ideas. There are plenty of cards to work with, so inventiveness and knowledge of the card pool will give you a boost. Six booster packs go to the winner. Get to work and send in those entries!

The Usual Details:

Please put “Reader Challenge 6: xxxxx” in the subject line of your email, where the x’s are your total number of points. Be sure to pay attention when you’re scoring so that you count each summon correctly.

Begin by stating your opening hand, and then give a step-by-step breakdown of what hits the field when. Be precise and clear—If we can’t understand your sequence, you’re probably not going to win the challenge.

Don’t forget to include your full name and mailing information. We can’t send you your prize without it, and I’m sure you don’t want to donate those boosters to us.

Please only enter once. Additional entries will void all entries you submit.

Entries should be submitted to contest@metagame.com and must be received by Friday, November 19, at 5 p.m. EST.
