Round 3: Ryne Jeans vs. Andrew Fredella
Jason Grabher-Meyer

23 year-old Ryne Jeans plays for local stable Team Biggin. They represent ENE Card Shop in Rolsville, right here in North Carolina. Jeans’ deck has garnered some attention here today, but now he’s up against his toughest opponent yet.

Andrew Fredella is a repeated Day 2 competitor and a Shonen Jump Champion. At 18 years of age he’s one of Team Nexus’ star players, and represents the famous B.R.A.D.’S Sportscards and Collectibles in Coral Springs, Florida. He was playing a burn deck similar to Louis Raimondo’s, one of the most feared matchups in this format.

He won the opening roll and got things started with three cards set to his back row and a set monster. “Go ahead.” Ryne activated Destiny Draw, discarded Destiny Hero - Fear Monger, drew two, and set Treeborn Frog. He set another spell or trap, and ended, passing play to Fredella.

He drew and contemplated his back row, setting two more cards and then flipping Morphing Jar! Fredella thought he’d played to an incredible advantage, but Jeans discarded Goldd, Wu-Lord of Dark World and Sillva, Warlord of Dark World! Jeans special summoned both off the discard and chose to resolve Sillva’s effect first, sending two cards to the bottom of Fredella’s deck before destroying Dark Bribe and Dimension Wall with Goldd’s. Fredella set one spell or trap, activated Wave-Motion Cannon and ended.

Breaker the Magical Warrior came down for Jeans, and he used Breaker’s effect to destroy Fredella’s set Gravity Bind. Breaker attacked Morphing Jar, Sillva attacked directly, and Fredella responded with Dimension Wall! Goldd made a direct attack to follow up and scored a clean shot on Fredella’s life points, dropping him to 4800 while Jeans sat at 5700 total.

Hammer Shot destroyed Sillva next turn, and another flipped from Fredella’s back row to destroy Goldd. He set a monster and ended, leaving Jeans to bring back Destiny Hero - Fear Monger in the end phase with Call of the Haunted. Next turn he searched out Elemental Hero Stratos with Reinforcement of the Army, and summoned him; Fredella responded with Solemn Judgment to negate the summon, cleaving his life points in half and dropping to 2400. Breaker attacked Fredella’s face down Big Shield Gardna, and Fear Monger attacked to destroy it. Jeans set Phoenix Wing Wind Blast to finish out.

Fredella set a monster, ended, and when Jeans flipped Phoenix Wing Wind Blast Fredella conceded. He congratulated his opponent and both duelists quickly proceeded to side decking.

“I’ll start,” announced Fredella, promptly setting five cards to his back row and then a monster. Jeans summoned Snipe Hunter, and Fredella flipped Solemn Judgment to negate its summon. Jeans set two cards to his back row to finish.

Fredella drew, set his topdeck to his back row and flipped Morphing Jar! This time Jeans didn’t have any Dark World monsters, losing Mystic Tomato, Dark Magician of Chaos, and Reinforcement of the Army. Fredella summoned Mystic Tomato, attacked with both it and Morphing Jar, and reduced Jeans to 5900 life points.

He flipped Dark World Lightning next turn and Fredella chained the target: Gravity Bind. He played another from his hand, and this time Fredella chained Skill Drain to again keep his card. Jeans summoned Stratos and activated Twister to try and destroy Gravity Bind, but was met with Dark Bribe! He played Mystical Space Typhoon next, trying to destroy the Gravity Bind, but a second Dark Bribe stopped him yet again!

Fredella set two cards to his back row, ended, and Jeans flipped Royal Decree! Fredella had Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy it in response. Jeans set Card Trooper, briefly stymied. Fredella set another monster, Jeans set a spell or trap and Fredella passed. Jeans flip summoned Card Trooper, activated Torrential Tribute in response to his own summon and drew for Card Trooper — Fredella got to search his deck for Mystic Tomato thanks to his Sangan being destroyed. Jeans activated Destiny Draw, discarded Malicious, and set a monster. Fredella set a monster, Jeans set one, and Fredella set another. Jeans passed.

Play was back to Fredella, who activated Different Dimension Capsule and set a third monster. Jeans did nothing but discard Malicious, reducing his hand to the minimum size. Fredella passed, Jeans set a spell or trap, and Fredella took his card from Different Dimension Capsule. He activated Wave-Motion Cannon and ended.

Jeans activated Card Destruction! He discarded six cards total, including Sillva, Warlord of Dark World, which was special summoned. He drew into Twister, which he activated to target Skill Drain. It was destroyed. Jeans then tributed his face down Morphing Jar for Jinzo!

Jinzo attacked Fredella’s face down Dark Mimic LV3, giving him a draw. Sillva then attacked Fredella’s face down Mystic Tomato, giving him another Dark Mimic. Fredella turned it to defense next turn, then destroyed Jinzo with Hammer Shot. He set another spell or trap, but in the end phase Jean targeted Jinzo with Call of the Haunted! Dark Bribe negated Call in turn.

Fredella paid for it. Jeans topped into Heavy Storm next turn and wiped all four cards from Fredella’s back row! It left him with just two monsters, and Jeans tributed his face down Disk Commander for Jinzo. Jinzo attacked Fredella’s Mystic Tomato, Sillva, Warlord of Dark World attacked the resulting Dark Mimic, and Fredella dropped to 1700 life points.

Smashing Ground destroyed Jinzo, and Fredella set four more cards to his back row. Jeans activated Premature Burial targeting Jinzo, but Fredella activated Solemn Judgment and dropped to 850 life points. Jeans activated Destiny Draw, discarded Fear Monger and drew two. He summoned Breaker the Magical Warrior, attacked with it, and hit Magic Cylinder for 1900 damage. Sillva attacked Dark Mimic LV3 and Jeans set a spell or trap to end his turn.

Fredella summoned Breaker the Magical Warrior himself and attacked Jeans’ Breaker, destroying both. He then activated Swords of Revealing Light, Nightmare’s Steelcage, and Wave-Motion Cannon. Jeans was playing exceedingly well, but things were looking grim.

He set a second back row card, ended, and Fredella passed. Jeans set a monster, Fredella launched Wave-Motion and Jeans dropped to 200 life points. Fredella played one more back row card and activated another Wave-Motion Cannon. He’d have the duel next turn.

Jeans activated Pot of Avarice and shuffled back four monsters plus Breaker.  The duel stood at 850 life points to 200. Jeans drew two for Avarice, then activated Chain Burst! It would keep Fredella from activating any more traps, literally on pain of death. He tributed his two monsters for Dark Magician of Chaos, brought back Heavy Storm and activated it, but Fredella chained Scapegoat!

Dark Magician of Chaos hit a Sheep, Fredella set a spell or trap card, and Breaker came down for Jeans one more time. Its token destroyed Fredella’s back row card and both Breaker and Magician of Chaos hit a Sheep each. Next turn Fredella set another back row card. Jeans kept up the pressure, tributing Breaker for Raiza to bounce Fredella’s last card! Fredella only had one more Sheep left, and it couldn’t stop three attacks. Raiza hit the Token and Dark Magician of Chaos attacked directly for game!

Ryne Jeans takes an astounding 2-0 victory over Shonen Jump Champion Andrew Fredella with the deck he calls “Perfect World,” moving on undefeated!
