Round 2: Robert Ledesma-Sandoval vs. Aaron Zaugg
Jerome McHale

Robert Ledesma-Sandoval showed me his version of the Macro Cosmos deck before the event started, and I made sure to keep an eye on him after round one. Aaron Zaugg is playing a unique Fire-attribute swarm deck that’s packing Ultimate Baseball Kids, Command Knights, and Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV6. Both players looked genuinely excited to be here and were eager to prove themselves to the dueling community.

Robert won the die roll and opted to go first, setting a card to each zone. Aaron started off with Graceful Charity, discarding Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV6 and Inferno. He then brought the Horus back by Premature Burial and summoned UFO Turtle. The Dragon met with Sakuretsu Armor, but the Turtle was allowed to hit into Magical Merchant fetching Heavy Storm for Robert. Robert summoned Exiled Force to take care of the Turtle and passed to Aaron who summoned Ultimate Baseball Kid and removed his Turtle from the game to summon Spirit of Flames. Both hit directly, but the Spirit was taken down next turn by D.D. Survivor. The Survivor was destroyed in turn by Smashing Ground, and in the next turn, Robert summoned D. D. Assailant to take out the Kid.

Aaron set a monster and passed, but it was blown away next turn by Zaborg the Thunder Monarch which attacked directly. Aaron set a monster and passed to Robert who attacked again with Zaborg. Masked Dragon was revealed fetching a copy of itself, and then Robert set a card before ending. Aaron finally revealed his face down Heavy Storm prompting Robert to chain Macro Cosmos to fetch Helios – The Primordial Sun. He then used Nobleman of Crossout on Robert’s Dekoichi the Battlechanted Locomotive and switched his Dragon to defense position. It wasn’t enough, though, as Robert brought out another Survivor and activated Smashing Ground clearing the way for his monsters to end the game.

Robert – 1 Aaron – 0

Aaron dove into his side deck between games, looking for an answer to Robert’s strategy. His Fire-based deck was quick and strong, but it had no way to deal with the recurring threat that D.D. Survivor becomes.

Aaron started the next game with a set to each zone and Robert did likewise. Aaron then flipped Giant Trunade to bounce Robert’s set card and activated Nobleman of Crossout removing all copies of Dekoichi from the game. He then flipped over his Ultimate Baseball Kid and summoned a Command Knight. Both monsters swung directly for 3500 damage reducing Robert to 4500. He set a spell or trap and then summoned D. D. Assailant. Unable to attack Command Knight, he was forced to ram the assailant into the Baseball Kid.

He then set another card to his spell or trap zone and passed to Aaron who attacked straight into Sakuretsu Armor. He passed without any cards on the field and Robert took advantage of it with a Spirit Reaper discarding Aaron’s Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV8. He set a card and passed to Aaron who set a spell or trap and summoned Inferno. The set Torrential Tribute was destroyed by Mystical Space Typhoon in the end phase, and Zaborg the Thunder Monarch was summoned eliminating the Inferno. Aaron had a hand filled with tribute monsters, though, and he couldn’t draw anything to stop Zaborg.

Two turns later, Robert claimed his second victory of the day, improving to 2-0!
