Day 1 Wrap-Up
Jason Grabher-Meyer

The dust has settled and more than 400 duelists have been pared down to a final 16. Nine long rounds were played today, and the result is yet another surprising Day 2. Three Zombie decks and three Comic Odyssey burn decks lead the pack. But 10 more decks are hot on their heels, everything from Demise and Gadgets to Dimensional Fissure and Volcanics. Here’s how the bracket for tomorrow looks . . .

Len Bolat will take on Quan Lewis, in a match that pits Zombies against each other in a mirror match. Little is known about either of these duelists’ experience levels, so this match will probably come down to tactics and who can avoid the worst topdecks.

Then, Donald Myers takes on Kenny So, in a match that it seems Myers is destined to lose. He made his way to Day 2 with a beatdown variant packed with monster control, but So is running Comic Odyssey burn — monsters aren’t a big concern for him. If Myers is to have a hope of winning, he’ll need to get seriously creative with his side deck.

Augustin Herrera will compete against Austin Ruggieri, pitting Machine beatdown burn against Perfect Circle. It will be an uphill battle for relative unknown Ruggieri, since Herrera will be sure to use his Cyber Phoenixes to his advantage. This is the matchup Herrera was waiting for.

David Duran has made it to Day 2 with Dimensional Fissure, but now he’s up against Keanson Ye. Ye is armed with a tricky variant of Apprentice Monarch that will be largely unaffected by Duran’s remove-from-play effects. This one is anybody’s duel, but it seems that whoever takes an early stance of aggression will have an extreme advantage.

Chris Pittao will face Jerry Wang in a rematch from their Round 5 Feature Match. In that match Pittao received what can only be described as a vicious stomping, but history in these tournaments has a way of not repeating itself, and Pittao’s brutal beating earlier may have given him the insight he needs to overcome his opponent. Or Hydrogeddon will eat him alive. Either or.

Dale “The Boss” Bellido has made Top 16 here in Chicago yet again, and tomorrow he’ll take on Daryl Gessler in a bid to regain his title! Gessler is running a slow, evenly-paced Gadget build, but Bellido is running the always-explosive Zombies. Luck may play a big role in this match, and, while Bellido will have the edge in game 1, Gessler’s side deck might be enough to make games 2 and 3 a different story.

It seems like every Day 2 nowadays has one lone Demise OTK player, and this weekend that duelist is Jeremy Manansala. He’s taking on Louie Raimondo, another duelist running Comic Odyssey burn. If Manansala can win fast enough he could pull this out, but the advantage seems to be in the favor of Raimondo, whose plethora of counter traps could dominate.

Finally, Miguel Albarran has made Day 2 with a Volcanic deck. He’s up against Anthony Duke, yet another Comic Odyssey burn duelist, and he’ll have his work cut out for him. Like Donald Myers, Albarran’s deck is heavily weighted towards monster control, so he may have a rough time taking on Duke’s deck with its rather insignificant monster lineup. Albarran is susceptible to Crush Card Virus, so look for it to be a big card in this match tomorrow.

Tomorrow morning fifteen of these sixteen competitors will go home with a great achievement and a lot of memories — but no title gold. Only one will earn the right to call themselves a Shonen Jump Champion, and right now it seems nigh-impossible to guess who that might be. Will Dale Bellido win back his Championship? Can underdog Miguel Albarran really take Volcanics all the way? Will Zombies or burn claim victory, or will something totally different take the win? We’ll find out tomorrow starting at 9:30, as we bring you extended feature match coverage live from Day 2 of Shonen Jump Chicago!
