Charlotte Shonen Jump TCG Championship Series Tournament

It’s over! From a sea of tournament veterans a single newcomer has risen above all other competitors: Justin Arnwine is your new Shonen Jump Champion!

Fifteen TeleDAD players and one lone Lightsworn duelist made the cut to Day 2 this weekend, but the field was more interesting than it looked at first glance. Four TeleDAD decks made radical changes and innovations, challenging the conventional build and making the Top 16 as a result. Henry Su adapted Synchro Dude tech like Lightning Vortex and Mind Control while incorporating new picks like Threatening Roar and Magical Mallet. Chris Bowling dropped to two copies each of Krebons and Emergency Teleport, while Mark Borden brought Light and Darkness Dragon back to Day 2 for the first time in months. Chris Taporco ran three Destiny Hero - Dasher cards, two copies of Jinzo, and Prometheus, King of the Shadows. Everyone was looking for an edge this weekend, and the result was a ton of creativity rewarded with Day 2 showings.

But at the end of the day Justin Arnwine triumphed with a purely conventional version of the archetype. He was the underdog all day long, first facing off against four-time finalist Jerry Wang in the Top 16. From there he had to face the Top 16’s only Lightsworn deck in the hands of Arthur Rogers before taking on another big veteran: Alonzo Peters. Finally, he went up against Shonen Jump Champion Andrew Fredella, pulling out a win in Game 3 of the tournament’s final match!

Four weeks from today, Shonen Jump action will return to Chicago, but for now we congratulate all duelists who competed here at Shonen Jump Championship Charlotte, especially your new Champion, Justin Arnwine!

Day 2
Andrew Fredella has made it to the Finals of a Shonen Jump Championship three times before, winning once.
Both competitors were playing similar builds of TeleDAD.
Arthur Rogers is the only Lightsworn player in the Top 16, and he just came off a huge win over Adam Corn. His opponent is Justin Arnwine, who we featured yesterday in a feature match against his long-time friend and deck-building collaborator Jerome Baisey.
Twenty-year-old Henry Su hails from Georgia, and was one of several duelists here in Day 2 playing highly innovative versions of TeleDAD. It’s well-constructed for the mirror and has a great long game, but Su was up against veteran Andrew Fredella. Could tech win out over experience?
Welcome to Day 2 of Shonen Jump Championship Charlotte!
Day 1
It’s over, and just when we thought TeleDAD couldn’t get any more dominant . . . It has.
Both competitors are playing Teleport Dark Armed Dragon, and this is anybody’s match!
Both of these duelists had already received a feature match today, and now with one loss each under their belts, they were fighting for their survival in this tournament.
It’s been a while since we’ve had a tech update here in Metagame tournament coverage, but today’s tournament is just bristling with single card innovation.
How could I not feature this? Two-time Shonen Jump Champion Paul Levitin versus U.S. National Champion Chris Bowling.
David Efird's deck was one of two rogue builds at the top tables, and I was eager to see how it worked against conventional TeleDAD.
With a tech update in the works, I wanted to take some time to find out what was sitting at the top tables.
This matchup should be in Baisey’s favor, but metagamed decks frequently just don’t pan out against Teleport Dark Armed.
Philip Black opponent is the chief reason for this feature match. He’s undefeated so far today, and his deck seems well-teched for the TeleDAD matchup.
Patterson’s innovative strategy has a lot of potential and is like nothing else we’ve seen before, so it really deserves an in-depth look.
Both of these competitors were playing TeleDAD, so this was bound to be a great example of skill in the mirror.
With no big-name versus big-name matchups here in Round 1, I had an opportunity to feature a new deck we’ve never seen before.
It’s been just two weeks since Cesar Gonzalez’s second Championship win in Seattle, and today marks the last in a string of high-profile tournaments.
