Day 1 Intro

This is it — the last Shonen Jump Championship before the World Championships two weeks from today. Hot on the heels of SJC Phoenix last weekend, we are live from the Rock Financial Showplace in Detroit!

So far we’ve had seven Shonen Jump Championships in this format, and a different deck has won every single one. At Phoenix, Machine beatdown was the deck to beat, with five places in the Top 16 and a Championship win in the hands of Theerasak Poonsombat. While Monarchs put forth an equal showing in raw numbers for Day 2, Destiny Heroes slipped significantly, while rogue decks like Gellenduo burn and Korey Stoner’s Earth beatdown stole slots in the final rounds. The result is a field that’s wholly unpredictable here today; while Monarchs and Machines are certainly going to be the biggest threats, we may see a totally different deck win Championship gold this weekend.

With Machine beatdown now firmly, albeit perhaps briefly, sitting at the top of the metagame, we should see Widespread Ruin take over from Sakuretsu Armor as the trap-based monster control card of choice. A lot of players today seem to be adapting popular strategies by retrofitting them with new ideas, too; Monarch variants are at an all-time high, and I’m seeing everything from the popular Card Trooper variants to Zombie builds with Instant Fusion. Duelists are working hard to solve the deck’s dependency on Brain Control in a metagame where targeted effects may be difficult to use.

Duelists in attendance include Canada’s finest: Matt Peddle, Andrew Hayton, Dale Bellido, Ryan Peddle, Chris Pittao, and two-time National Champion Dexter Dalit. From America, proven duelists include John Jensen, Vincent Tundo, Andrew Fredella, and Jeff Jones. Feroze Ramcharan is back in action and up to his old tricks, playing a variant of Ultimate Tyranno OTK that’s going to be a spectacle whether it wins or loses — more on that as the day progresses.

Duelists are being seated for the player meeting, and in mere minutes the tournament will begin! 380 competitors are raring to go, and we have nine rounds of Shonen Jump action ahead of us. Get ready for what is bound to be another surprising tournament.

Welcome to Shonen Jump Championship Detroit!
