It’s preview time! That most glorious of times, when every site update is like Christmas and all the Metagame writers put on their elf hats. Okay, so only
I put on an elf hat and then everyone gives me weird looks while I try to get them to sing my custom-written Preview Time Carols.
“Previews heeeeeeere, are you listenin’? In fresh paaaaaacks, holos glisten!”
They’re all staring at me like
I’m insane. Buncha Scrooges . . .
Okay, so today we’re looking at Card 23 from
The Lost Millennium, a Warrior with the Dark attribute. It has 1800 ATK, 200 DEF, and an effect that special summons it back onto its owner’s side of the field any time it’s face up and removed from play. It can be an impressive card depending on your metagame, and since it’s only a normal rare, it can easily make an impact on both the Constructed and Sealed Pack scenes.
In Constructed, this card has a lot going for it. As a Warrior, it’s searchable with the ever-popular
Reinforcement of the Army, and the slightly less popular (but still very good)
Freed the Matchless General. Beyond the obvious, its ability to maintain its board presence makes it a nice fit for
The A. Forces, and it’s superb with
Fusion Sword Murasame Blade.
If you aren’t familiar with
Fusion Sword Murasame Blade, it’s an equip spell that gives +800 ATK but must be attached to a Warrior. The cool part is that can’t be destroyed by effects that destroy spell cards. Giving Card 23 a single
Fusion Sword Murasame Blade gives it a whopping 2600 ATK that can’t be stolen by
Mystical Space Typhoon or
Heavy Storm. Card 23 also can’t be taken down by
D. D. Warrior Lady or
D. D. Assailant because of his effect, and it’s bigger than virtually any tournament-common tribute monster!
D. D. Warrior Lady and
D. D. Assailant are also worth discussing in the context of today’s preview card. While there are other cards that Card 23 will dodge (for instance,
Dark Core, which is something I’ve dabbled with, on and off) these two are the big concern, and if they’re not very big in your
metagame this might be more of a side deck choice for you. If, however, you’re sick and tired of
D. D. Warrior Lady and her little pal wrecking your board position on a regular basis, Card 23 is the card for you! In addition,
The Lost Millennium may contain some other removal-oriented cards that Card 23 could interfere with. It almost seems inevitable—removal from the field is a rather under-utilized mechanic, and as the game continues to mature, I think it’s natural that many current mechanics will need to be expanded. Card 23 will only get better with age.
It’s also nice that Card 23 is a Dark-attribute monster. That means it’s going to slip easily into a variety of Chaos-oriented decks, like Chaos Zombie and the obvious Chaos Warrior.
In Sealed Pack, Card 23’s status as a silver-foil rare makes it very playable. As a relatively gifted monster in the ATK department, its effect is more of a bonus, as its raw attack potential makes it a great first pick in Booster Draft or a nice pull in Sealed Pack. Watch for this card to be a powerhouse at your local Sneak Preview event!
That’s it for Card 23, but stay with us all week as we here at Metagame.com bring you more exclusive previews of the new and exciting expansion,
The Lost Millennium . . .
. . .and if you’re lucky, some caroling, too.
