Scrub Brush Challenge: San Francisco!
Hello everyone, and welcome to another installment of MetaGame’s Scrub Brush Challenge. It’s been on hiatus for a while, so let me explain the concept to those of you who might not remember it from a year or so back.
Participants in this challenge are basically claiming they will make it to day 2. It’s easier now with Top 16 rather than Top 8, but it’s still hard to do, especially in a field of 600+ players. Now then, I’ll track the progress of our challengers throughout the day and give updates on their performance. If they make it to day 2, they’ll get a little interview and photo op on MetaGame. If they don’t . . . they have to take a penalty picture with the Scrub Brush Challenge scrub brush. And that’s really what we all look forward to, right?
Allow me to introduce today’s competitors! Usually I cap this off at 16, but there were a lot of players who really wanted to get in on this, so I relented and extended the enrollment. Here we go:
Mike Arimas is 18 years old, from Union City, California. He’s representing Team Fubar, and started playing Yu-Gi-Oh! again when Light of Destruction was released.
Steven Bradley is 21 years old, from Chicago, Illinois. He’s here representing Team Houdini, and he simply cannot think of a single interesting fact.
Edmond Chiu is 17 years old, from Oakland, California. He is here as a Brave Individual, and attends the University of California, Davis as a Computer Engineering Major. He can ride a bike without any handlebars! Due to safety issues he will not be demonstrating this here at the tournament, though.
Franklin Debrito is 28 years old, from Pompano Beach, Florida. He’s representing Team Nexus. Yesterday, he went to the De Brito Chocolate Factory in Hollister, California. He would like everyone to know that, “The chocolate at my factory is mixed by waterfall.”
Corey Defeo is 20 years old, from Los Angeles, California. He’s here as a Brave Individual, and arrived at the SJC with absolutely no cards. He’s lucky people let him borrow enough to build a deck.
Jason Destowet is 29 years old, from Newark, California. He’s representing Team Fubar.
Jaden Dirk is 18 years old, from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. He is representing Team Omen, and Jaden is actually his name. No Yu-Gi-Oh! involved.
Arbie Estabillo is 21 years old, from Freemont, California. He’s representing Team Fubar, and once got carded at a casino for ordering a Pepsi.
Mike Glowacki is 17 years old, from Chicago, Illinois. He’s representing Team Houdini. He talks in his sleep.
Anthony Gospel is 21 years old, from San Jose, California. He is here representing Team Pro Star Sports & Gaming, and as a child he modeled in JCPenney, Sears, and Montgomery Wards Catalogs. He also brought me some Wall of Ivy cards.
Dylan Hardy is 18 years old, from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. He is here representing Team Omen. He turned down Harvard to play Yu-Gi-Oh!
Matt Highline is 25 years old, from Reno, Nevada, and a longtime participant in the Challenge! He loves his daughter.
Kevin Hubbard is 19 years old, from Vancouver, British Columbia. He’s here representing Team Minority, and believes himself to be the only player from Western Canada in the Scrub Brush Challenge.
Jarrid Kipling is 20 years old from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. He’s representing Team Omen, and is from the flattest province in Canada.
Tomas Mijares is 18 years old, from Hayward, California. He’s here representing Team Fusion. Tomas competed in the National Scrabble Championships in the 7-8th grade.
Omar Navarro is 20 years old, from Torrance, California. He’s here representing Team Enigma, and yesterday was his birthday! Happy late birthday, Omar!
Joey Ng is 19 years old, from Union City, California. He’s representing Team Fubar.
Mike Powers is 20 years old, from Buffalo, New York. He’s here as a Brave Individual, and Zaki will personally scrub him if he loses.
Mike Salisbury is 21 years old from San Jose, CA. He’s here representing team — Team Captain Obvious & General Accident. He sold his Lightsworn deck to pay for school.
Zaki Said is 21 years old, from Chicago, Illinois. He’s here representing Team Houdini, and knows that if he buys enough packs, there will be video monitors at SJC’s.
AJ Tachella is 17 years old, from Lodi, California. He’s here as a Brave Individual. AJ had his wisdom teeth out on Monday, and I have to remind him to take his antibiotics at 2:00 pm. I gave him a ride to the tournament.
Justin Trias is 18 years old, from California. He’s here representing Team Punishment, and had a friend bet $40 he’d make it to day 2 at San Mateo. Let’s see how well he does this time!
There we go! I’ll bring you an update soon so you can see how everyone is doing.
