Dark Magician of Chaos is not a monkey. I just had to open with that after sifting through a pile of submissions that tried to use Dark Magician of Chaos to score the cheap win. Some seemed ignorant to the monkey-only rule. Others gave me a detailed series of reasons why Dark Magician of Chaos was, in fact, a monkey. But they all had one thing in common—they were all dead wrong, and thus, didn’t win.
In truth, there only were three acceptable monkeys: Bazoo the Soul Eater, Acrobat Monkey, and Berserk Gorilla. There were some convincing arguments that Manticore of Darkness was a monkey (one of the best being that it had opposable thumbs and only apes and humans have opposable thumbs), but a Manticore just isn’t a monkey. That said, the winner got his entry in before the Manticore craze started, so my judgment call on Manticore isn’t technically hurting anyone’s chances.
The monkeys were a red herring. The real challenge was how to utilize the three monkeys at your disposal. I was also hoping that some people would rummage through their collections looking for monkey illustrations the way I did when I created this challenge. What can I say? If I’m going down, I’m taking others with me.
Over twenty individuals submitted entries that resulted in Pwnzor’s defeat! But only four submissions total ended up being legal (repeat, Dark Magician of Chaos is not a monkey) and worked all the way through. This week’s champion is James M. from Arcadia, California!
Before we look at James’s answer, let’s go over the two common mistakes made in many of the submissions (other than summoning Dark Magician of Chaos).
Summoning an illegal monster. The challenge stated, “Coco can do anything legal on either of her turns, provided she never summons a monster to the field without a monkey, ape, gorilla, chimpanzee, or an entity maintaining the appearance of any of the aforementioned creatures somewhere in its illustration.” That means not only normal summon, but also special summon and flip summon as well. A lot of people tried to use Monster Reborn or a similar recursive card to summon illegal monsters, but they were still considered to be “summoned” and were thus ruled illegal. Flipping monsters without summoning them was allowed.
Having Pwnzor make decisions that benefit you. This included decisions related to the composition of Pwnzor’s deck. For instance, if you activated Card Destruction, you could not choose what would wind up in Pwnzor’s graveyard. A good trick for tying up your loose ends in this case is to play Painful Choice, then Graceful Charity, saying that you “discard whatever card Pwnzor doesn’t choose.” That way you can be completely sure that nothing you’re doing is illegal.
How did James help Coco destroy Pwnzor’s life points and his self-esteem? Let’s take a look at the explanation.
Opening hand: three Dimension Fusion, Cannon Soldier, Confiscation.
Turn 1: Draw: Pot of Greed
Main Phase 1: —Activate Pot of Greed (Painful Choice and Graceful Charity) —Activate Painful Choice (three Bazoo the Soul Eater and two Berserk Gorilla), opponent gives you any card —Activate Graceful Charity (get Monster Reborn, Reversal Quiz, and Berserk Gorilla), discard the card received by Painful Choice and the Berserk Gorilla —Activate Confiscation (my life points=7000, opponent life points=100,000), choose any card. —Summon Cannon Soldier —Activate Monster Reborn on a Bazoo the Soul Eater —Activate Bazoo's effect, to remove 2 more Bazoos and 1 Berserk Gorilla —Activate Dimension Fusion (my life points=5000, opponent life points=100,000), special summon the removed monsters —Tribute Berserk Gorilla for Cannon Soldier's effect (opponent life points=99,500) —Activate the second Bazoo's effect and remove a Berserk Gorilla —Activate Dimension Fusion (my life points=3000), bring back a Gorilla —Tribute that Berserk Gorilla for Cannon Soldier (opponent life points=99,000) —Activate the third Bazoo's effect and remove a Berserk Gorilla —Activate Dimension Fusion (my life points=1000) to bring back that Gorilla —Activate Reversal Quiz, call spell, check the top card (Tremendous Fire), the life points are now exchanged (my life points=99,000 , opponent life points=1000) —All cards are sent to the graveyard. End Turn
Opponent’s turn: —Summon Mokey Mokey End Turn
Turn 2 Draw: Tremendous Fire
Main Phase 1: —Activate Tremendous Fire(My life points=98,500, Opponent life points=0)
And ta-dah . . . Pwnzor gets roasted by a monkey. How humiliating!
Thanks to everyone who competed! There were some very creative solutions. All in all, this week’s entries were a lot more organized and well thought-out than those of Reader Challenge 1. The next Reader Challenge will not hinge on a key combo. Instead, it will reward a great deal of work and testing. Check back for all the details and the beginning of Reader Challenge 3! |
