Round 9: Jerry Wang vs. Luis Morillo
Jason Grabher-Meyer

Both of these competitors hail from New York. Together Jerry Wang, Erin Diaz, and Chris Bowling are the team known as Duelists of Arcadia, and for two of their members it’s been a huge weekend. This was Jerry’s chance at another Shonen Jump Championship.

But Luis Morillo is starving, hungry for his first Shonen Jump Day 2 after years of playing this game with fellow New Yorkers. Both competitors are playing Teleport Dark Armed Dragon, and this is anybody’s match!

Jerry got things started with Elemental Hero Stratos, searching Malicious, then discarding it for Destiny Draw to draw two. That left him with Cold Wave, Solemn Judgment, Krebons, Allure of Darkness, Reinforcement of the Army, and Gold Sarcophagus! He activated Reinforcement of the Army, got Dark Grepher, and removed it for Allure of Darkness. Gold Sarcophagus let him remove Monster Reborn from his deck, and he ended by setting Solemn Judgment. It was a pretty tremendous turn, and Morillo would be hard-pressed to defeat Jerry in this duel.

He activated Allure of Darkness, drew two, and removed Breaker the Magical Warrior. He set three cards to his back row and ended. Jerry was up.

He activated Cold Wave! He removed Destiny Hero - Malicious to summon another, normal summoned Krebons, and Synchro summoned Stardust Dragon! Stardust and Stratos both attacked for 4300 damage combined, and Morillo passed his turn.

With Solemn Judgment set, Wang had the confidence to summon another Krebons, and Synchro summoned with Stratos for Goyo Guardian! Morillo had to flip Solemn Judgment, and Jerry let it go: Morillo dropped to 1850 life points. Jerry followed up with Dark Armed Dragon, special summoning it and making a show of searching his graveyard . . .

. . . then he summoned a second Dark Armed Dragon and Morillo scooped in annoyance.

Jerry Wang sacks out big time, utterly destroying Luis Morillo! Could anything have stopped that? Jerry was now one win away from another Shonen Jump Day 2. He took a moment to give credit for his Cold Wave tech to Orlando Champion Paul Lyn and the second duel started shortly thereafter.

Morillo activated Reinforcement of the Army to get things started, searched for Elemental Hero Stratos, summoned it, and grabbed Malicious. He discarded Malicious for Destiny Draw, drew two, and set a spell or trap card.

Jerry fired back with Allure of Darkness, drawing two cards and removing Dark Armed Dragon: he had no other monsters. He set Mystical Space Typhoon and Scapegoat, and ended with Solemn Judgment, Brain Control, Heavy Storm, and Destiny Draw in hand. “Go ahead.”

Morillo summoned Sangan, then attacked for 2800 with Sangan and Stratos. Morillo set a second spell or trap (Torrential Tribute) to finish his turn, but lost it in his end phase to Jerry’s Mystical Space Typhoon. Jerry set another spell or trap next turn and ended, still stuck without a monster: his draw for the turn was Emergency Teleport.

Allure of Darkness got Morillo two cards deeper into his deck in return for Destiny Hero - Doom Lord, and he pitched Malicious shortly after for a second Allure. A third Allure followed moments later! Morillo removed another Malicious, his third. It seemed as if he’d crippled himself, and if Jerry could just hold out he could take this duel with ease. With Scapegoat set, that might be an easy feat to accomplish.

Morillo summoned Krebons and attacked with it: Jerry took the damage. He swung with Sangan next. Stratos attacked last and Jerry flipped Scapegoat: he claimed his four Sheep Tokens and Stratos destroyed one of them. He ended his turn, and Jerry drew.

He flipped his set Heavy Storm, destroying Morillo’s set Emergency Teleport! Morillo summoned another Krebons, and Jerry activated Brain Control to take Sangan, then activated Emergency Teleport to bring out Krebons. He then Synchro summoned with Krebons, Sangan, and a Sheep Token to bring out Goyo Guardian! Morillo got D.D. Crow with Sangan’s effect. Goyo ran over Stratos, and when it was special summoned Wang searched his deck for another copy with its effect. He summoned it next, searched his deck for Destiny Hero - Malicious, and went off.

Jerry discarded Malicious for Destiny Draw: Morillo removed Malicious with D.D. Crow. That left Jerry to set three cards to his back row, ending his turn with one card in hand, two Stratos, Goyo Guardian, and two Sheep Tokens.

Morillo drew to five cards and special summoned Dark Armed Dragon: Jerry negated the summon with Solemn Judgment! Morillo summoned Snipe Hunter, Jerry had no response, and Morillo discarded Dark Grepher to try and destroy Goyo Guardian. He missed. He discarded Kycoo next, missed again, and finally destroyed it by discarding his last card: Emergency Teleport.

Morillo Synchro summoned with Krebons and Snipe Hunter, brought out Goyo Guardian, and swung. “Mirror Force?” Jerry flipped over Mirror Force and Morillo conceded.

Jerry Wang is headed to yet another Shonen Jump Day 2!
