Congratulations to Wilson Luc, winner of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Shonen Jump TCG Championship!

Congratulations to Therrasak Poonsombat (T), Raymond Purnama (Twinsen21), Michael Vasquez, Wilson Luc, Ray Ruballos , Freddie Garcia, Ian Wingrove, and Mario James for placing in the Top 8 at the Yu-Gi-Oh! Shonen Jump TCG Championship!

220 duelists showed up for the Las Vegas Yu-Gi-Oh! Shonen Jump TCG Championship on Sunday. They ranged in ages from young to old and from boys and girls to ladies and gentlemen. Some of the weekend’s competitors are local duelists from Las Vegas, while some made a trip here from California. Some duelists even came to this event from Missouri!

Out of the duelists, a mixture of new duelists and Yu-Gi-Oh! veterans entered this event for a chance to win an invitation to Nationals in 2005 and a copy of their very own Cyber-Stein card. It’s only the third one to be released in America, and it’s quite a prize, whether you treasure it as a trophy or end up selling it.

The environment at Vegas was strangely mixed, as a good deal of Lava Burn decks made an appearance. Decks based on Horus the Black Flame Dragon have been seen occasionally as well. Some bizarre yet effective decks also made an impression. Strike Fusion Tech, a deck utilizing many dark monsters including D. D. Scout Plane with Strike Ninja has been seen in a few numbers. Some players also brought some new and creative ideas to Las Vegas.

The final match featured Wilson Luc, a member of Comic Odyssey, against Ian Wingrove and his earth beastdown deck. Both players, the judges, and this writer were tired from a long day of dueling, so few words were said and the final match began.
Freddie Garcia is from Comic Odyssey. They aren’t a big team in Yu-Gi-Oh! . . . you know, they only had two duelists place in the top four of Nationals 2004. That’s not a big accomplishment, right?
Ian Wingrove owns a game store called “Past Times” from Oren. It’s hard to specify the games he typically plays. As a store owner, Ian has played various board games, card games . . . well, any game.
"Wait, did you just summon Dark Necrofear? And you’re competing against these decks? Dude, I have to interview you! Your deck rules!"
“I’ve only been playing this game for a little less than six months. I started when I saw Solar Flare Dragon in Ancient Sanctuary, and figured I could make a pretty good budget deck with cards like that. Then Ultimate Baseball Kid came out in Soul of the Duelist, followed by Raging Flame Sprite in Rise of Destiny. After some adjustments, I had a pretty interesting burn deck.”
Jae Kim, also known as JAELOVE from the Pojo gaming website, has created a few innovative deck ideas. One of those ideas has become more popular since the deck made it into the Top 8 of a regional in Northern California, consisting of around 150 duelists.
Both duelists have played Yu-Gi-Oh! for some time now. Dominic Estrella ran a Warrior/Chaos deck, while Ralph ran a Lava Burn deck.
Continuing this trend of creative and relatively successful decks, Jaideep Singh entered the seventh round of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Shonen Jump TCG Championship with a 5-1 record. What deck could he have used to achieve this record, you ask?
At times, it’s hard to watch a match between two duelists who are using practically identical decks. The match can often be a bit dull and occasionally predictable. However, this doesn’t mean those players do not have their own ideas and strategies.
See, more than any other game, Yu-Gi-Oh! brings out all ages, sizes, colors, and creeds. Seldom will you find that single unifying force that transcends all borders, and that, more than anything else, is what makes Yu-Gi-Oh! special.
