Top 16: Keanson Ye vs. David Duran
Jason Grabher-Meyer

David Duran had managed to make it this far in the tournament with one of the more unique decks in Day 2 — Dimensional Fissure. He’s paired off against Monarchs, which should be a favorable matchup, but Keanson Ye’s deck is no ordinary Apprentice Monarch build. This match may have some big surprises, and Duran, the dark horse in this pairing, would have his work cut out for him.

Ye opened with a set card to each zone, and lost his face down Mystic Tomato to Nobleman of Crossout. Duran set a spell or trap, not playing a monster, and Ye summoned Card Trooper next turn. He sent Brain Control, Torrential Tribute, and Swords of Revealing Light to the graveyard to boost its ATK to 1900 and then attacked directly. Duran had no response and took the damage.

He summoned Elemental Hero Wildheart next turn, running over Card Trooper and dishing out 1100 damage. Ye fired back with Premature Burial next turn, brought up Card Trooper, boosted it with priority to send Snipe Hunter, Tomato, and Raiza to the graveyard, and Duran flipped Torrential Tribute to destroy it. It seemed like a desperate play, as Ye of course got to draw when Card Trooper was destroyed. But Duran needed to buy himself time in order to draw into his key cards.

Not slowing down, Ye summoned Mystic Tomato and ran it into Wildheart, clearly wanting to use his recruiters up before Dimensional Fissure hit the field. Tomato was destroyed and pulled Sangan. Ye now had five monsters in his graveyard; he activated Pot of Avarice in main phase 2. He ended with Sangan face up and a set spell or trap card in his back row.

Duran attacked with Wildheart next turn, destroying Sangan and sending Ye to go and fetch Card Trooper. Ye was really riding it for all it was worth. Duran set two cards to his back row to finish his turn.

Soul Exchange was Ye’s first play next turn, targeting Wildheart. He tributed the Hero for Raiza the Storm Monarch, but Solemn Judgment was flipped by Duran to negate and destroy the Monarch. Duran dropped to 3050 life points and Ye set a second spell or trap. Duran just shook his head next turn, set another Solemn, and lost it to Mystical Space Typhoon in his end phase.

Card Trooper came down again and Ye sent Breaker the Magical Warrior, Morphing Jar, and Call of the Haunted to the graveyard to put it at 1900 ATK. It swung again, dropping Duran to 1150 life points. Play was to the flagging Dimensional Fissure duelist.

He fished Elemental Hero Stratos from his deck with Reinforcement of the Army. “I wish Breaker was a Warrior,” he remarked. He summoned Stratos and searched Wildheart from his deck. Stratos attacked, Ye flipped Mirror Force, and Duran chained his third and final Solemn Judgment to negate it, forcing through his attack but dropping to 575 life points. Ye sat at 4100 life points and Duran ended his turn with one more set card to his back row. He was hanging on by a thread.

Ye was placed on the defensive, and set a card to each zone. “Wow, you didn’t do crazy things,” remarked Duran. He flipped his set Heavy Storm, destroying Ye’s Heavy Storm as a result! Nobleman of Crossout removed Ye’s Mystic Tomato from the field, and moments later Duran was swinging with both Stratos and Wildheart. Ye dropped to 800 life points, but all he needed was a Cyber Dragon for game.

He drew, and couldn’t find one. He activated Soul Exchange, tributed his opponent’s Stratos for Zaborg the Thunder Monarch, and blew away Wildheart with Zaborg’s effect. He passed, one turn away from winning but also in a vulnerable position. Monster removal could be the death of him.

And it was. Duran special summoned Cyber Dragon, normal summoned Exiled Force, tributed the latter to destroy Zaborg, and then attacked with Cyber for game.

David Duran breaks away from what appeared to be a terrible opening hand, taking the first duel with no Dimensional Fissure in sight! Both duelists began to side deck in a focused manner. Duran breathed for the first time in minutes.

“I thought you had me,” confessed Duran. “You had so many cards.”

“Yeah. Well, I had like, two Tomato and other awkward stuff,” replied Ye.

“I opened with one Wildheart and trip Solemn. It was rough.”

Game 2 began swiftly, with Ye opening yet again. He set a monster, set Waboku, and ended. “Go ahead.” Duran special summoned Cyber Dragon, attacked into Ye’s Crystal Seer, and Ye let the Seer be destroyed, taking Dust Tornado. Duran set two back row cards, Ye set a card to each zone, and Duran was up again.

Cyber Dragon attacked, hitting Ye’s Mystic Tomato. He pulled Sangan again, both placing himself in a position to use it before its effect could be played around, and setting himself up for a Monarch next turn. Duran set Enemy Controller but lost it to Dust Tornado in the end phase. Next turn Ye eliminated Pulling the Rug with Mystical Space Typhoon, but when he tributed Sangan for Zaborg Duran flipped Solemn Judgment to negate Zaborg’s summon. Ye searched his deck for Card Trooper just like last game, special summoned Cyber Dragon, activated Book of Moon to turn Duran’s Dragon into face-down defense mode, and then destroyed it in battle. He was down, but not out.

Duran summoned D.D. Survivor and attacked Cyber Dragon, threatening Shrink, which he activated in the damage step. It gave Ye a major moment of pause as he wondered if his opponent really had Shrink. Duran set a spell or trap, Ye summoned and boosted Card Trooper, swung, and lost it to another Shrink. Ye set Sakuretsu Armor, destroyed Survivor with it next turn, and Duran set a spell or trap. Spirit Reaper hit him next turn, forcing him to discard Smashing Ground, his last in-hand card.

Duran set a spell or trap; Ye attacked with Reaper and set another monster. He lost it, Crystal Seer, to Nobleman of Crossout. Reinforcement of the Army fetched Elemental Hero Wildheart for Duran (telegraphing that he was holding Elemental Hero Stratos already) and he summoned Wildheart, attacking over Reaper to bring Ye down to 5950. Duran himself sat at 3400 life points. Ye’s play next turn was to turn Reaper to defense and set another spell or trap.

Duran had indeed been holding Stratos, explaining why he hadn’t searched for him last turn with Reinforcement. He summoned Stratos, searched out another Wildheart, and Ye had no response. Duran passed though, unable to get around Reaper. Next turn Dust Tornado destroyed Duran’s set Pulling the Rug. Reaper was tributed for Zaborg, and Zaborg took out both Wildheart and Stratos. Duran lost the next Wildheart to the Monarch as well, set a monster, and hit Zaborg with Mirror Force. Ye ended with no monsters, but two cards in his back row and more in hand.

Duran flip summoned D.D. Survivor and attacked, still with no Dimensional Fissure to back him up. Ye responded with Waboku, and next turn he summoned Snipe Hunter and activated Brain Control for game — Duran only had 2500 life points remaining, and his own Survivor took him down.

Keanson Ye takes game 2, forcing the match to a third duel! Again, side decking was focused and extensive.

It was Duran’s turn to open the third and final duel, but he opted to play second instead, a very rare decision. Ye opened with Treeborn Frog in attack and a set spell or trap. Duran special summoned Cyber Dragon, normal summoned Banisher of the Radiance, and ran over the Frog! It was removed, Banisher hit directly, and Ye was down to 4400 life points! Duran set two cards to his back row, finishing a huge turn. Ye was in trouble.

He set two more cards to his back row and Duran summoned Elemental Hero Wildheart, fearlessly threatening a gameshot on turn 2! Ye activated Dust Tornado, destroyed Duran’s set Solemn Judgment and Duran attacked with Wildheart anyway: Ye flipped Scapegoat in response and Duran took down three Tokens. That Dust Tornado saved Ye’s life in this tournament, a great read.

He set another card to his back row on the following turn, and his body language did not display confidence. Duran’s aggression was such an amazing advantage in this weekend’s metagame. Wildheart attacked next turn, hit the last Token, and, when Cyber Dragon attacked, Ye had to stop it with Book of Moon. Banisher still hit directly, and Ye was down to 2800 life points. He set a card to each zone and ended, watching his hopes for Shonen Jump gold slipping away.

Duran flip summoned Cyber Dragon and Ye had no response. He summoned Breaker the Magical Warrior next, destroyed Ye’s bluff set Pot of Avarice, and attacked with Wildheart. “That’s game,” announced Ye, immediately offering the handshake and revealing his face down Crystal Seer.

It was over in an instant! Underdog competitor David Duran trounced Keanson Ye in game 3, and would move on to the quarterfinals with Dimensional Fissure!
