Round 4: Augustin Herrera vs. Robert Morgan
Jason Grabher-Meyer

Augustin Herrera made the Top 8 here last year, and was looking to make a repeat appearance on Day 2. But Robert Morgan, the Michigan duelist who had distinguished himself two weeks ago at Shonen Jump Columbus, was now directly in his path. Morgan, recruited just today by Team Rampage, had everything to prove.

He won the roll, opened with a set card to his back row, and passed. Herrera summoned Spirit Reaper, walked into Torrential, set a back row card and ended. Morgan tried to press with Breaker the Magical Warrior, but hit Book of Moon, and watched his Breaker get turned face down. Next turn Herrera ran it over with Cyber Dragon, but he’d lose the Dragon on the following turn to Snatch Steal and Tsukuyomi! Morgan activated Confiscation, discarded Herrera’s own Snatch Steal, and passed after a big attack!

Herrera had nothing, and set two back row cards. Cyber Dragon attacked anyway, knocking him down to 3800. Morgan set a monster, which prompted Herrera to set one too, but a turn later, Morgan was Heavy Storming the field and working a Magician of Faith/Tsukuyomi loop, still in clear control of the duel.

Herrera used Premature Burial, brought up a monster, tributed it for Zaborg, destroyed Magician of Faith, and attacked Cyber Dragon, making a big push to regain control. Morgan took it right back, special summoning Cyber Dragon, normal summoning Tsukuyomi to turn Herrera’s Zaborg face down, and hit for game—Tsukuyomi attacked the face down Zaborg, and Cyber Dragon struck the final blow.

Both duelists took the opportunity to side deck. “You’re going to go first, I assume, right?” asked Morgan. Herrera nodded, and moments later set a back row card. It was his only move that turn.

Morgan retorted with a set card to each zone, prompting Herrera to bring out Cyber Dragon and attack. He hit Spirit Reaper, tried to blow it away with Snatch Steal, but was nailed by Dust Tornado. He set a monster and ended his turn, after hesitating, and refusing, to set a second back row card. Morgan brought out Zaborg the Thunder Monarch, destroyed Herrera’s set monster (Magician of Faith) and attacked Cyber Dragon, but was repelled by Book of Moon. Herrera cleared the Dragon out on the following turn, set a back row card, and passed.

Play again passed to Morgan, who used Nobleman of Crossout to remove Herrera’s Dekoichi the Battlechanted Locomotive from play. Herrera stripped another from his deck. Morgan set a monster, Skelengel, and passed.

Herrera attacked it with Mystic Tomato, destroyed it, and Cyber Dragon swung direct for 2100 as Morgan drew for Skelengel. Morgan set a monster, set two back row cards and passed. Cyber Dragon hit the monster on the following turn, Mystic Tomato swung directly, and Herrera set another monster to leave himself with Cyber Dragon, Tomato, and the set newcomer.

Asura Priest hit the field on Morgan’s side, and it attacked Herrera’s Mystic Tomato. The Tomato fetched Spirit Reaper. Morgan then hit the face down monster, which was revealed to be Pyramid Turtle, and it in turn fetched Ryu Kokki. It seemed to puzzle Morgan, who then swung with the Priest into the Reaper. It had won him some damage, but no actual board presence, which had to have been a disappointment to Morgan.

Still, he activated Creature Swap in main phase two and pulled off one of the big combos popular here today! Since Asura Priest is a spirit monster, Creature Swap was going to be giving Morgan a free monster from Herrera’s side of the field, and Herrera had to decide whether to give Morgan Cyber Dragon, Ryu Kokki, or Spirit Reaper. He chose Cyber Dragon. Morgan played Heavy Storm, set two back row cards, and bounced Asura Priest back to his hand.

Herrera attacked with Ryu Kokki and brought down his pilfered Dragon! Spirit Reaper then hit directly, robbing Morgan of Mystic Tomato. Herrera set a card to each zone, and he passed his turn.

Morgan summoned Sangan, and responded with a Torrential Tribute of his own. But Herrera chained Royal Decree, leaving Morgan with nothing to do but chain Call of the Haunted for Exiled Force! Exiled Force attacked Herrera’s face down, Sangan, which got him Pyramid Turtle, Morgan’s Sangan attacked Spirit Reaper to press through some damage, and Exiled Force was tributed to destroy Ryu Kokki in main phase two. Herrera drew for his turn, summoned the Turtle, hit Sangan with it, and swung with Reaper. Morgan pulled D. D. Warrior Lady with his Sangan, but lost it immediately to the Reaper’s attack! Herrera set one back row card next to his Decree and ended, prompting Morgan to set a monster and pass back.

Herrera summoned a second Spirit Reaper, and attacked with Pyramid Turtle: he hit Morgan’s set Spirit Reaper, but he had a set Enemy Controller to destroy it! Both of Herrera’s Spirit Reapers hit Morgan directly, making him drop two cards! Morgan summoned Asura Priest and attacked both Reapers on the following turn, dishing out some serious damage, but he refused to attack the Pyramid Turtle.

Herrera set a monster, attacked with one Reaper to strip Morgan’s hand clean, and turned the other to defense. A turn later it was game, as Herrera tributed Spirit Reaper for Mobius the Frost Monarch and attacked for the final 2800 damage he needed.

The match moved to game three!

Morgan was visibly shaken up a bit. Not used to feature matches, he didn’t like the crowd behind him and asked them to disperse. Herrera was not fazed in the slightest, though, and was obviously gaining some mental momentum after coming back from his game 1 loss.

Morgan opened the game with Graceful Charity, discarding Cyber Dragon and Sangan. He set a monster and passed immediately, an odd move considering the discarded Sangan. Ditching Sangan on turn one usually telegraphs a Call of the Haunted, but Morgan made no back row play.

Herrera was looking at an opening hand of two Creature Swap, Magician of Faith, Last Will, Pyramid Turtle, and Ryu Kokki. He set Pyramid Turtle and played Swap, taking Morgan’s set monster. “You got Mystic Tomato,” announced Morgan, practically giving Herrera a death sentence. Next turn Morgan summoned Spirit Reaper, attacked the Tomato with his borrowed Turtle, pulled another Spirit Reaper with Mystic Tomato’s effect, and hit with both Reapers, a grievous blow that robbed Herrera of Last Will and Magician of Faith.

But he didn’t set anything to his back row, so on the following turn Herrera summoned another Pyramid Turtle. He crashed it into the one across the table, earning two Spirit Reapers for his trouble. He put them in defense position, set a back row card, and passed. Morgan played Breaker the Magical Warrior, destroyed Herrera’s set Creature Swap, and used Smashing Ground to blow away one Reaper. He passed, having no way to get rid of the second Reaper. Herrera set a spell or trap and passed, Morgan passed back, Herrera passed, and Morgan brought out Chaos Sorcerer in defense position. Sorcerer removed the last Reaper, and Morgan pressed with the two Reapers and Breaker. Herrera only had one set spell or trap . . .

. . . but it did the job. Herrera flipped his set Mirror Force, and Morgan lost three monsters to Herrera’s single trap card! Morgan could do nothing but end his turn.

Herrera special summoned Cyber Dragon, attacked and destroyed the Sorcerer, and set a back row card. Morgan brought out D. D. Assailant, rammed it into the Cyber Dragon, and ended. Herrera drew into Ryu Kokki and again passed, holding Premature Burial with one set spell or trap card on the field.

Morgan summoned Asura Priest, attacked, and after checking his graveyard Herrera let the attack through. Morgan set a back row card and passed, with the LP totals standing at 5700 to 7600 in Morgan’s favor.

Herrera summoned Sangan, attacked for a grand, and Morgan hit it with Asura Priest: Herrera pulled Dekoichi the Battlechanted Locomotive from his deck with Sangan’s effect. Morgan used Confiscation to discard Herrera’s Premature Burial in main phase two and ended his turn. Herrera set a monster, passed back, and lost the set monster to Nobleman of Crossout—it was Dekoichi. Asura Priest hit Herrera for 1700 damage yet again, and Morgan set one more spell or trap.

Again, Herrera had nothing to do but set a monster, and again, Morgan made him pay for it with Nobleman of Crossout: this time it removed Herrera’s Night Assailant from the game. Asura Priest got to attack directly again!

This time, Herrera set a spell or trap, and when Asura Priest attacked it smashed into Sakuretsu Armor. Herrera passed on the following turn without doing anything though, unable to make a move.

Morgan special summoned Chaos Sorcerer and attacked, attempting to end the duel, but hit Scapegoat. He attacked one Sheep and passed. Herrera took the Chaos Sorcerer next turn and attacked with it, now in control of the field. He tributed it away for Ryu Kokki though, and doing so was a huge mistake. Morgan flipped Torrential Tribute, clearing the field and removing Herrera’s mutton wall. Herrera set a spell or trap and passed.

Seeing that his opponent had only 1600 life points remaining, Morgan attacked directly with Morphing Jar. Herrera fired back with Cyber Dragon, but attacked into Sakuretsu Armor. He set his last card to his back row and passed.

Morgan tributed his aggressive little Jar for Goldd, Wu-Lord of Dark World, but attacked into Book of Moon. Herrera removed Goldd from play on the following turn with Nobleman of Crossout, but it was all over a turn later. Morgan kept the aggression coming and attacked with Exiled Force. With just 900 life popints remaining, there was nothing Herrera could do to stay in the game.

Robert Morgan scores one for Team Rampage, winning his feature match and moving on with an undefeated 4-0 record!
