Alan wasn’t worried. He still had 8000 life points, while his opponent, James, had only 2000 life points. Setting down both Mirror Force and Ring of Destruction, Alan ended his turn. After drawing his card, James looked at Alan and said, “Wow, thanks a lot for a great game.” Alan began to feel a little nervous as James played Giant Trunade to return both traps to Alan’s hand. Looking at the life point totals again, Alan was reassured that although he might be taking a hit this turn, he should have plenty of life points to survive whatever James was going to throw at him. Unfortunately for Alan, his opponent summoned Mataza the Zapper and equipped the card with two copies each of Axe of Despair and Mage Power. Entering his battle phase, James declared, “I’ll directly attack your life points for 4800 damage. Do you have Kuriboh in your hand?” Shaking his head in disbelief, Alan scooped up his cards in defeat before James could declare another attack.
For the player who loves the beatdown style of play, getting a monster to attack is usually a good thing. Of course, getting a monster to attack twice in one turn is even better. Mataza the Zapper is one such monster, and today we’ll look at cards that enable this underestimated Warrior slice and dice its way to victory.
To start things off, I should state the obvious—Mataza’s ATK value of 1300 is definitely below average. Actually, this has to be the case, considering the fact that the Warrior can attack twice in one turn. Plus, control of Mataza can’t switch, so cards like Creature Swap and Snatch Steal can’t be used on the Zapper. If Mataza were any stronger, it would cause some game-balance issues, so the card’s 1300 ATK value is appropriate. However, the Zapper’s low ATK is still a weakness that can be exploited, so we need to eliminate the flaw by supporting Mataza with equip-spell cards.
Axe of Despair is great for a quick 1000 ATK boost. Mage Power works wonders as well, especially if you have other spells or traps on your side of the field, because you’ll get a bonus of 500 ATK and DEF for each one. Then there is United We Stand, an equip spell that gives the bearer an 800 ATK and DEF boost for each face-up monster that you have on your side of the field. Of course, it goes without saying that combining United We Stand with Scapegoat can result in a very scary Mataza the Zapper. By using these equip spell cards, not only are we making up for Mataza’s weak ATK value, but we’re also reinforcing the Zapper’s main strength—the ability to attack twice in one turn. If you have Mataza in play, and equipped with Axe of Despair and United We Stand, your opponent will be staring at a 3100 ATK monster that could potentially do 6200 points of direct damage in one turn.
Of course, having a pumped-up ATK value doesn’t mean anything if you run headfirst into Compulsory Evacuation Device or Mirror Force. Getting rid of your opponent’s set spells and traps is critical in achieving the lightning-fast victories you can get by playing Mataza correctly and at the right time. Running just one copy of Heavy Storm or Mystical Space Typhoon may not be enough to deal with the hidden hazards that your opponent might have ready to spring on you. Therefore, you may also want to use Dust Tornado and Raigeki Break to help you clear the field of those pesky face-down cards. In addition, Giant Trunade is great for bouncing multiple spells and traps. Trunade is an efficient way to clear the field, because you can use only one card to remove multiple potential threats.
Remember, for this kind of strategy, it doesn’t matter that you aren’t destroying your opponent’s spells and traps with Giant Trunade—the most important thing is that you now have a chance to attack without fear of retribution from your opponent. Of course, timing is everything, so when you decide to strike with Mataza will depend on your judgment and the situation at hand.
There are some monsters that work well with Mataza, and Mystic Tomato immediately comes to mind. With the added bonus of thinning your deck, you can quickly bring the Warrior to the field when Mystic Tomato’s ability is triggered. Another great searcher is Sangan, a Fiend with an effect that allows you to put a copy of Mataza the Zapper into your hand. In addition, Command Knight can provide Mataza with a 400-ATK boost, giving the Zapper a total of 1700 ATK. Even without equip spells, you can have 3400 points of direct pain just waiting to be inflicted on your opponent!
Using Giant Germ and Creature Swap is a great way for Mataza to do some nice damage as well. When your opponent has only one monster and you have Giant Germ already set, activate Creature Swap. Your opponent will have Giant Germ, and you’ll have your opponent’s monster. Then, you should summon Mataza the Zapper and declare an attack on Giant Germ. When the Germ is destroyed, its effect will trigger and deal 500 points of damage directly to your opponent. You will then get to special summon up to two more copies of Giant Germ and attack with them in the same battle phase. You should attack a second time with Mataza, because you’ll have a clear shot. If the monster that you took with Creature Swap was in attack mode, you might as well attack with that monster too.
In the above scenario, you can substitute Mystic Tomato for the Giant Germ. Just make sure that Mystic Tomato is in defense position, or else Mataza won’t be able to destroy it in battle. After destroying Mystic Tomato, you can bring out another copy of Mataza and swing for 2600 points of direct damage.
You can use Gravity Bind to protect Mataza from larger threats until you bring out all of your equip-spell cards. It also gives you control over the tempo of a duel, as Mataza can still attack while most of an opponent’s monsters lie paralyzed. Another great card for protecting Mataza is Spell Shield Type-8. Although you have nothing to fear from Snatch Steal, your opponent can still use Enemy Controller to switch Mataza to defense position, which is usually not a good thing. Book of Moon is another targeted quick-play spell that can stop Mataza dead in its tracks is Book of Moon. This card is especially deadly for Mataza, because if the Warrior goes face down, any equip spells attached to the Zapper will be destroyed. Using Spell Shield Type-8 will go a long way in making Mataza a constant threat that your opponent has to deal with.
