This week we’ll be setting the Traditional format aside and delving into the exciting world of Synchro monsters. Many players are overwhelmed by the seemingly endless deck choices to make, coupled with the looming update to the Forbidden and Limited list. It seems difficult to predict exactly how the new format will be played, and just what decks are going to take the first Shonen Jump Championship by storm. However, we’ll be looking at a deck that just might be making a splash in the hands of some top players: a fusion of Dark Armed Dragon, Psychic monsters, and Synchros.
By adding the Psychic monsters to the already explosive Dark Armed Dragon deck, you’re given easy control over the graveyard, simple Synchro summons as early as turn 1, and answers to almost every problem. As a matter of fact, with the inclusion of Emergency Teleport, you’re granted answers so quickly you’ll think you’re playing Gladiator Beasts! This is going to open a new way of achieving quick wins and overwhelming turns, while coupling a strong consistency and viable toolbox for almost any situation.
Normally, I’d like to make players work harder for their decklists by writing them in the Traditional format (forcing them to take the concept and evolve it to the Advanced format). Luckily, some of these cards just might be seeing Limitation in September. That means you’ll have to test this deck thoroughly to understand it and thus make the correct changes when that Forbidden and Limited list is finalized.
The Monsters
You’ll first notice a rather obvious Dark Armed Dragon backbone in the monster lineup, which offers the deck a win condition and the synergy necessary to special summon Synchro monsters and quickly overwhelm opponents. Past that, the deck really starts getting fun.
Notice the two copies of Caius the Shadow Monarch. With Stardust Dragon and Prime Material Dragon running around, it always pays to have answers to otherwise indestructible monsters. Also notice that you’ll have easy tribute fodder, combining the familiar Perfect Circle tech with three copies of Emergency Teleport. After that, we have two Tuners: a level 2 and a level 3. That means we can Synchro summon by tributing Malicious and Psychic Commander for any level-8 Synchro monster, or any level-4 monster and Krebons for a six star, or . . . well, you get the point. You’ll be able to Synchro summon for almost anything you want as fast as you want, which is a great strength of this deck.
Also notice that should you open the game with Emergency Teleport and another Psychic type monster, you’ll be able to use Destructotron to destroy your opponent’s back row, tribute him for the effect of Mind Master, special summon another monster and possibly Synchro summon, which will give you three Darks in the graveyard. That’s a huge turn, and it isn’t going to be rare at all.
Phantom of Chaos has a new skill set in this deck. While it was always amazing for controlling your Dark count in the graveyard (and it still is), you now have more targets for its effect. All the Psychic monsters are going to provide some great answers when combined with the Phantoms. It’ll be a toolbox of answers in the late game.
The Spells
The spell lineup is rather simplistic. It uses the standard spells from Dark Armed Dragon decks that we’ve been seeing for a long while, but with three copies of Emergency Teleport added. Obviously, this is going to allow for fast tribute summoning, abuse of the Synchro monsters, and answers to a wide variety of situations. It’ll even let you stop a Gladiator Beast attack with Krebons during your opponent’s turn.
The Traps
The trap lineup is short, and had to be skimmed strongly to make way for the monsters and spells. The three copies of Solemn Judgment will help against almost everything.
It’s a shame to only be running one copy of Limit Reverse, as it has an enormous number of targets in this deck. Even without Destiny Hero - Disk Commander, you’ll be able to target Mind Master, your Phantom of Chaos, or even your Sangan for easy tribute fodder. The Crush Card Virus is obviously an easy card to play, and one with a disastrous effect. It covers your Phantom of Chaos, and nukes your opponent’s hand and field.
The Extra Deck
This is where the deck has evolved. You’ll have answers here for almost any problem. These are your game-enders to be used next to Dark Armed Dragon. They’ll help you gain life points, cover your plays, or even help you abuse your opponent’s Gladiator Beast monsters. With a wide array of levels, you’ll also be able to quickly Synchro summon multiple times each game. Almost any opening hand will lead to a Synchro summon of some sort if you choose.
Extra Deck: 13
1
Gladiator Beast Gyzarus1 Avenging Knight Parshath—level 8
3 Stardust Dragon—level 8
3 Goyo Guardian—level 6
1 Magical Android—level 5
2 Thought Ruler Archfiend—level 8
2 Red Dragon Archfiend—level 8
When playing this deck, you’ll notice that you have answers almost as abundant as if you were playing Gladiator Beasts. However, while Gladiator Beasts might be the most resilient deck archetype, this deck holds much more potential and aggression. You’ll be able to make overwhelming and consistent plays, which is what you’re looking for. Enjoy testing this deck, because it’ll most likely be something you’re looking at for a while on the other side of the table!
