Neither of these players needs much of an introduction. Jeff Jones is a familiar face at these tournaments and has made Day 2 twice before today. Ryan, on the other hand, is an Odyssey player who's earned back-to-back Shonen Jump victories. As luck would have it, this table was being randomly deck-checked. Neither player had any faults on their decklists, so, after a short delay, the match began. Ryan won the roll and chose to begin the match.
He did so by setting a monster and a spell or trap card. Jeff began his turn by summoning Cyber Phoenix and attacked Ryan's face down monster, which was Old Vindictive Magician, who destroyed the Phoenix. Ryan passed his turn. Jeff played Premature Burial and attacked directly with Cyber Phoenix. He passed his turn, and Ryan flipped up Heavy Storm, destroying Royal Decree and the useless Premature Burial. Ryan set two spell or traps and passed to Jeff. During Jeff's turn, Ryan flipped Trap Dustshoot, revealing that Jeff had game this turn. He sent back a Cyber Dragon, and Jeff attacked with Cyber Phoenix. Ryan had no play on his turn, and Jeff played Giant Trunade when his turn began. He had drawn into a new Cyber Dragon, and summoned Proto-Cyber Dragon, used Power Bond to Fusion summon Cyber Twin Dragon and attacked directly for game.
Both players smoke screened their side deck choices and Ryan chose to go first for the second game. He did so with a set monster and a set spell or trap card. Jeff drew his sixth card slowly. "Game?" he said, but he simply set a monster and passed. Ryan flip summoned Old Vindictive Magician to destroy Jeff's set UFO Turtle and attacked for 450. He set another spell or trap card and passed, flipping Trap Dustshoot during Jeff's draw phase. He forced Jeff to send back Cyber Phoenix, and Jeff played Premature Burial on UFO Turtle. The Turtle took down the Magician and Jeff passed.
Ryan special summoned Cyber Dragon on his turn, flipped Heavy Storm to destroy the Turtle, and attacked directly. He then set a monster and a spell or trap before passing back to Jeff. Jeff summoned Cyber Phoenix and attacked into Gravekeeper's Spy. Another Spy came to the field, and Jeff scooped up his cards. Since Ryan knew the entirety of Jeff's hand, Jeff knew he'd simply attack with all his monsters and win next turn.
Jeff opened the third duel, and did so by summoning Card Trooper and playing Machine Duplication. Two more Troopers joined the table in defense mode, and Jeff followed up with a set spell or trap card. He flipped Trap Dustshoot during Ryan's draw phase, sending Gravekeeper's Spy back to Ryan's deck. Ryan special summoned Cyber Dragon and attacked the attack position Trooper. He then set a monster and a spell or trap card. Jeff knew Ryan had both Threatening Roar and Ring of Destruction in hand, and had to proceed carefully. He set a monster and passed.
Ryan attacked Jeff's face down monster with Cyber Dragon. It was Dekoichi the Battlechanted Locomotive and Jeff drew a card. Ryan set another monster and ended his turn. Jeff pumped twice and attacked Ryan's face down Dekoichi. He set a monster and a spell or trap card, and, during Ryan's draw phase, flipped Trap Dustshoot. Old Vindictive Magician was the only card in Ryan's hand, and he was sent back to the deck. Cyber Dragon attacked Card Trooper, and Jeff drew a card for its effect.
During Jeff's turn, he tributed Card Trooper for Jinzo, flip summoned Proto-Cyber Dragon, and activated Power Bond, sending Proto and an in-hand Cyber Dragon to special summon a 5600 Cyber Twin Dragon. Twin attacked Ryan's Cyber Dragon, and Jeff revealed Limiter Removal for the win.
Jeff Jones moves on 4-1, defeating CO powerhouse Ryan Hayakawa with an innovative Power Bond deck.
