Alexander Thomas-Johnson is a veteran player of the game, having followed Yu-Gi-Oh! since the onset of the TCG. Josh Fuzy, his opponent, is obviously no slouch since he is on the bubble for Day 2 contention.
The two players exchanged small talk with each other and the players around them who were shuffling up for game 2, and Josh offered a selection of dice to roll. Alex chose the six-sider, but Josh still won the roll and opened the game up by summoning a Red Gadget and pulling a copy of Yellow Gadget with Red's effect. He set a spell or trap card and passed. Alex summoned a copy of Crystal Beast Sapphire Pegasus, and placed Crystal Beast Ruby Carbuncle into his spell and trap card zone. He then played a Terraforming and put a copy of Ancient City - Rainbow Ruins into play. He attacked with his Pegasus, and Josh contemplated before putting his Red Gadget into the graveyard. Alexander passed his turn. Josh asked to read the Pegasus again, and then he summoned Cyber Dragon and followed up with Yellow Gadget, which was destroyed with the other two monsters when Alexander used Torrential Tribute. Josh passed, and Alexander set two spell or trap cards.
Josh summoned a Green Gadget and attacked Alex's face down Morphing Jar, discarding his five-card hand for another. Josh set two spells or traps and ended; one was a Trap Dustshoot. Alex revealed three Crystal Beacon, two Crystal Beast Topaz Tiger, and a Rare Value. Crystal Beast Topaz Tiger was sent back. Alex activated the Rare Value and Josh elected for him to ditch the Pegasus before he drew two. Alex activated Crystal Blessing and summoned a copy of Crystal Beast Sapphire Pegasus from his graveyard, and it put a copy of Crystal Beast Amber Mammoth into his spell and trap card zone. He activated Crystal Beacon and summoned another copy of Crystal Beast Sapphire Pegasus from his deck, putting another Mammoth down in his spell and trap zone. Alex followed up with Crystal Abundance, and he sent Shrink, Green Gadget, and Sakuretsu Armor to the graveyard from his opponent's side. After a quick check with the judge, it was confirmed that Shrink would stay on the field until the entire chain had resolved, and so would be sent to the graveyard by Crystal Abundance. So three copies of Crystal Beast Sapphire Pegasus came back, and Alex put one Crystal Beast Ruby Carbuncle and two copies of Crystal Beast Topaz Tiger into his spell or trap card zone. Then he summoned a copy of Crystal Beast Amber Mammoth from his hand, and 7100 points of damage went crashing into Josh's head. Alex passed, and Josh played two copies of Fissure and a Smashing Ground to leave one Crystal Beast Sapphire Pegasus on Alex's field, setting a card to his spell and trap zone and passing.
Josh summoned Snipe Hunter, called priority, and that was that; the bluff Confiscation hit the bin and this game ended with Alex victorious.
The two players looked at their side deck quietly, and, as they shuffled each other's deck, the crowd seemed very lively, and quite a large crowd had already gathered. Josh elected to lead the game.
Josh started with a Cyber Phoenix and two set spells or traps; one was Trap Dustshoot, sending Crystal Beast Sapphire Pegasus back. Alex summoned a Crystal Beast Topaz Tiger and attacked the Cyber Phoenix, giving Josh a card and leaving him at 7200 life points. He passed. Josh summoned Cyber Dragon, led up with Green Gadget to get a copy of Red Gadget from his deck, and ran over the Crystal Beast Topaz Tiger with Cyber Dragon for 500, hitting direct with Green Gadget to bring Alex to 1900. Josh passed, and Alex played Lightning Vortex, discarding Crystal Beast Amethyst Cat to nuke the field, and then summoned another Crystal Beast Topaz Tiger to knock Josh down to 5600. Alex passed, and Josh summoned the Red Gadget. While shuffling his deck from pulling out Yellow, he remarked that I had to put in that his friend Raymond Delgado let him use his mat. So I did. He also insisted that I say that the two built the deck as a joint effort. Finally, "Hi mom."
Josh played Fissure on a Crystal Beast Topaz Tiger and Mystical Space Typhoon once it hit the spell and trap card zone. He swung for 1300 and passed. Alex passed as well. Josh summoned Cyber Phoenix and attacked with both monsters for 2500. Alex summoned a Crystal Beast Topaz Tiger and attacked a Red Gadget for 700. He played Ancient City - Rainbow Ruins. Josh played Smashing Ground, but the Crystal Beast Topaz Tiger still hit the spell and trap zone. Josh played a Banisher of the Radiance, and attacked for 2000; the Banisher's damage was halved by the Ruins' effect. Alex played Crystal Beacon to summon a copy of Crystal Beast Sapphire Pegasus, and it pulled Crystal Beast Ruby Carbuncle. Alex tried to play Rare Value, and the judge confirmed that it could work. Josh selected one of Alex's Tigers, and Josh played Crystal Blessing to put a Crystal Beast Topaz Tiger and a Crystal Beast Amethyst Cat in his spell and trap zone. He activated Lightning Vortex shortly afterward, discarding another Lightning Vortex to clear the Cyber Phoenix and the Banisher off the field. Rescue Cat was summoned a moment later, and someone from the crowd practically broke into hysterics over how cool it was to have Crystal Beast Amethyst Cat pulled out with Rescue Cat. That was exactly what Alex did.
Alex tried to attack with his field . . . and succeeded, bringing his opponent down 4200 to 700. Josh read Ancient City - Rainbow Ruins and meditated on his next move. He played Smashing Ground, and destroyed the remaining Crystal Beast Sapphire Pegasus. He summoned Yellow Gadget and they moved on to game 3. The crowd congratulated both players on an awesome game, and someone jokingly remarked that it was no fun watching a game with the two decks in the format that required the least skill; that comment earned him some glares.
Alex chose to lead, and played a Terraforming to put Ancient City - Rainbow Ruins into his hand, passing the turn without playing. Josh played a Yellow Gadget, searching out a Green Gadget. He attacked, and set two spells or traps. Trap Dustshoot during Alex's standby phase revealed a Crystal Beast Topaz Tiger, two Lightning Vortex, Crystal Beacon, Crystal Blessing and the City, as well as a Snipe Hunter, who soon was shuffled back in. Crystal Beast Topaz Tiger hit the Yellow Gadget, and he played Ancient City - Rainbow Ruins and passed. Smashing Ground hit the Tiger, and Green Gadget hit the field and attacked. Josh passed, Alex passed. Red Gadget hit play and another 2700 was taken off of Alex. Alex played Crystal Beast Sapphire Pegasus, and when the Crystal Beast Ruby Carbuncle hit play, Mystical Space Typhoon destroyed it. Crystal Blessing brought it back out. Crystal Beacon put a Crystal Beast Sapphire Pegasus into play, and that monster put Crystal Beast Amber Mammoth into the spell and trap zone. Rare Value followed, and Josh chose to bin the Crystal Beast Topaz Tiger before Alex drew two. He attacked the Red Gadget with one Crystal Beast Sapphire Pegasus and Shrink brought it down to size. Alex halved the damage with his field spell, and attacked the Green Gadget with his other Pegasus. He played a copy of Lightning Vortex to destroy the Red Gadget, and then passed. Josh summoned Banisher of the Radiance and played Smashing Ground, hitting directly for 1600, which the Ruins reduced to 800. Play passed, and Alex drew a card with the effect of his field spell before activating Rare Value. This was looking to be another long turn. Alex summoned Crystal Beast Amethyst Cat and attacked directly with its effect for 600. Time was called right afterward, and the life was set with Josh at 6200 and Alexander at 1700. Alex set a spell or trap and ended his turn: not a very long turn after all.
Josh meditated coolly and looked at his hand. He switched the Banisher of the Radiance to defense position and set a monster. Alex played Lightning Vortex, discarding another copy of Ancient City - Rainbow Ruins to destroy the Banisher. Alex played Rescue Cat, summoned two copies of Crystal Beast Amethyst Cat, and Josh responded to the summon with his Torrential Tribute. Alex looked at his hand . . . and saw no way to win in time.
Josh Fuzy wins in overtime to move on with seven wins, two losses, and a good shot at making Day 2!
