The Apotheosis: Pedro's Light Deck |

Light has generally been underplayed in North America for the past couple of years, but with the recent rise of Chaos decks, many players have searched every past set and have found several excellent Light cards. Some players are trying their hands at decks based on Light monsters. Pedro sent me one such deck, and here’s what he had to say about it:
Hey, I'm Pedro, and I decided to make a Light deck. I used to play Chaos and Control decks, but I heard Nationals was all Chaos, and I wondered why. Do people play Chaos because it’s good, or because it seems to win the most? Anyway, I hope this deck works out.
Thanks man,
Pedro
Pedro’s decklist looked like this:
Pedro’s Light Deck 40 Cards
Monsters 3 Thunder Nyan Nyan 3 Shining Angel 1 Roulette Barrel 1 Reflect Bounder 1 Magician Of Faith 2 Hoshiningen 3 D. D. Warrior Lady 1 Airknight Parshath 1 Jinzo
Spells 1 Change of Heart 1 Dark Hole 1 Fissure 1 Graceful Charity 1 Harpie's Feather Duster 3 Luminous Spark 1 Monster Reborn 3 Mystical Space Typhoon 1 Painful Choice 1 Pot of Greed 1 Premature Burial 1 Raigeki 1 Terraforming
Traps 2 Waboku 1 Imperial Order 1 Ring of Destruction 1 Mirror Force 1 Call of the Haunted 1 Torrential Tribute
It’s a solid deck. The Light monsters are some of the best, but the deck needs some non-Light support monsters. Hoshiningen and Luminous Spark make good use of the Light attribute. When you’re making a deck that is based around a specific type or attribute (also called a tribal deck), you want to be doing so for a reason. I’m looking to diversify and add at least one more Light-only trick to this deck.
Let’s make some cuts. First, the deck’s a bit trap-heavy, and my suggestions aren’t going to change that. In most cases, when Jinzo hits the field, it tends to stay there, and that interferes with the three Thunder Nyan Nyans. It’s also getting safer to play without Jinzo due to the number of traps most competitive decks are running. It’s not worth maindecking it to negate just four or five traps, so let’s relegate Jinzo to the side deck. It won’t get in the way on a regular basis, and it can still be called upon when needed.
Next, I’m going to drop one of the Luminous Sparks and the Terraforming. Field spell cards are great until you get one out on the field, but then all other copies of the card become useless until the previous one is destroyed. I’m going to be keeping some chainable traps in the deck, so you should be able to protect your Sparks pretty well. Dropping from three Luminous Sparks to two shouldn’t be a big issue, and it’s going to give us some room in the deck to accomplish other things.
I’m also removing the two Wabokus. This deck has a very strong field presence, and once the fix is finished, it will be even stronger. Waboku isn’t necessary, and there are better things we can use instead.
Finally, I’m removing the Fissure. I would, however, suggest putting two Smashing Grounds in the side deck. In today’s metagame, Smashing Ground is going to be superior to Fissure. Some of the major threats that players rely on nowadays have relatively high DEF, such as Chaos Emperor Dragon - Envoy of the End, Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning, and D. D. Warrior Lady. These monsters all have above-average defense, and it’s pretty sweet to be able to destroy all of them with a single spell.
Let’s look at the additions. Despite playing Thunder Nyan Nyan, the deck definitely needs to be playing Witch of the Black Forest and Sangan. Sangan has some great targets in this deck for its effect, like Hoshiningen, Shining Angel, D. D. Warrior Lady, and Roulette Barrel. These are all things you’ll want to have at the ready in most games. Shining Angel itself is going to give you access to all of these, but Sangan is going to keep your hand strong and give you a second way of doing things. Witch of the Black Forest is a staple in any deck that relies on monsters to win. It can grab almost any monster in the deck, and that kind of control is rare and precious. Pedro included a note with his submission stating that he was considering dropping Jinzo for another Airknight Parshath. That’s exactly what I’d like to do. Airknight Parshath is just too good to ignore. The ability to punch through defenders is great, but the fact that you’ll also draw a card after almost every successful attack makes it one of the best tribute monsters in the game. I’ve seen many non-Light decks play it to great success. In a deck that can boost its ATK with Hoshiningen and Luminous Spark, Airknight Parshath is going to be even more valuable.
I’m also going to add a second Roulette Barrel. It might seem odd, but it’s a surprisingly good card that can potentially benefit from Shining Angel’s effect. Its own effect can be unexpectedly useful, and the fact that it has such high DEF makes it very playable. It’s a good opening play on turn 1, and it saw a lot of success in testing at Canadian Nationals.
Finally, I’d like to add a bit more oomph to this deck’s exploitation of the Light attribute. I’m a big fan of Solar Ray, and though it fits best in a deck running The Agent of Creation - Venus and Mystical Shine Ball, it can definitely pack a wallop here as well. It’s going to give the deck another source of damage besides attacking, and most opponents aren’t going to see it coming. When you’re playing a tribal deck like this, it’s important to have those unpredictable elements at your fingertips. It keeps your opponent guessing what your next move will be.
Let’s look at all the changes.
-1 Jinzo -1 Luminous Spark -2 Waboku -1 Terraforming -1 Fissure
+1 Witch of the Black Forest +1 Sangan +1 Roulette Barrel +1 Airknight Parshath +2 Solar Ray
The finished deck looks like this:
Pedro's Light Deck—Jason's Fix 40 Cards
Monsters 2 Airknight Parshath 3 Thunder Nyan Nyan 3 Shining Angel 2 Roulette Barrel 1 Reflect Bounder 1 Magician Of Faith 2 Hoshiningen 3 D. D. Warrior Lady 1 Witch of the Black Forest 1 Sangan
Spells 1 Change of Heart 1 Dark Hole 1 Graceful Charity 1 Harpie's Feather Duster 2 Luminous Spark 1 Monster Reborn 3 Mystical Space Typhoon 1 Painful Choice 1 Pot of Greed 1 Premature Burial 1 Raigeki
Traps 1 Imperial Order 1 Ring of Destruction 1 Mirror Force 1 Call of the Haunted 1 Torrential Tribute 2 Solar Ray
For the side deck, I’d suggest you play whatever fits your area. Two more Torrential Tributes are always a great idea, as are Jinzo and the two Smashing Grounds that I suggested a while back. Ceasefire can really help, and even a pair of Giant Trunades could be worth including. Customize your side deck to your metagame and your tastes.
I hope the fix helps! Thanks for sending it in!
