Flaming Eternity Preview: Number 042
Simon Sangpukdee

By now, I’m sure that all of you are eager to attend one of the many Flaming Eternity Sneak Preview events that will be held on February 26 and 27. To help you pass the time until that weekend, I’m going to put the spotlight on one of the new cards in the Flaming Eternity set.

FET-EN042 (Rare)
Continuous Spell
When
you activate this card, change all monsters on your opponent’s side of the field to face-down defense position. As long as this card remains face up on the field, monsters on your opponent’s side of the field cannot change their battle positions. Destroy this card during your second standby phase after activation.

This card flips all of your opponent’s monsters face down for two of your opponent’s turns. During those turns, your opponent can’t manually flip these monsters up to attack position. Lots of players who love Lockdown cards are already coming up with sinister plans to take advantage of the stall components of this card. In decks that usually rely on a lockdown strategy (such as Burn and Exodia), card “Number 42” is a welcome addition to the lockdown duelist’s impressive arsenal.

Some of you might be comparing this card to its famous cousin, Swords of Revealing Light. One of the big differences is that Number 42 only affects an opponent for two of his or her turns, while Swords of Revealing Light has an impact for three turns (which might explain why the spell was restricted). Another key difference is that Number 42 doesn’t stop an opponent from attacking—the card just flips an opponent’s monsters into face-down defense position and freezes the battle positions of any monsters on an opponent’s side of the field. If an opponent summons a monster in attack position after you activate Number 42, that monster will be stuck in attack position but will still be able to attack. Even though an opponent can’t make manual battle-position changes when Number 42 is in play, he or she can change the battle position of a monster by using a card like Book of Moon or Book of Taiyou.

Speaking of
Book of Moon, since that particular spell card is seeing a lot of play lately, Number 42 complements it quite nicely. Let’s say that you have Number 42 out, but your opponent tributes a useless, face-down monster to summon Jinzo. However, you were sneaky enough to have a set Book of Moon ready just in case something like this happened. You activate Book of Moon and target Jinzo, forcing the trap-hating Machine to go face down. You can breathe a sigh of relief, because Jinzo will remain face down for the duration of Number 42’s effect.

What do you do when
Jinzo is face down and helpless? Most of you are probably screaming the word “Crossout!” right now. You don’t have to be an advanced duelist to know that Nobleman of Crossout loves to hit face-down monsters. There’s a reason why Nobleman of Crossout is limited to two copies per deck. Removing a monster from the game can be a crippling blow, and Number 42 does a great job of setting up your opponent’s monsters for Nobleman of Crossout.

Another card that has great synergy with Number 42 is the ultra-rare trap
Nightmare Wheel. Your opponent will despise this combo, not only because Nightmare Wheel’s target can’t attack, but also because your opponent will take 500 points of damage on each of your standby phases. Plus, even when Number 42 is done, the monster you targeted with Nightmare Wheel will still be frozen, and your opponent will continue taking damage.

Some monsters will certainly be in a stronger position when Number 42 is activated and in play. For example, Sasuke Samurai is going to have a field day when all of your opponent’s monsters are face down and vulnerable to the stalwart Samurai’s effect. You can imagine a scenario in which Number 42 forces an opponent’s Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning face down, and then you summon an innocent-looking, 500 ATK Samurai that easily destroys the Envoy. In addition, the Mystic Swordsman line of monsters works well with Number 42, because the Swordsmen are strong when hitting face-down monsters. Mystic Swordsman LV6 can be particularly damaging when combined with Number 42, because the Warrior’s triggered ability to send a face down monster it attacks to the top of the deck can cripple an opponent. It can’t be stressed enough that Number 42 is key to the success of the strategies I’ve just discussed.

Because I’m sure that people will be wondering, I’d like to spare your local judges some trouble and tell you right now that Number 42 does not have a targeted effect. Therefore,
Silent Swordsman LV3 can be affected by the spell, and you must discard a card for Spell Shield Type-8 to negate Number 42’s activation.

When you’re at a Sneak Preview event, keep in mind that there are no restrictions on the number of each card you can play in Sealed Pack format. If you’re lucky enough to get multiple copies of Number 42 in your packs, you should use all of them in your deck. Remember, you don’t have to worry about cards like
Dust Tornado, Mystical Space Typhoon, Raigeki Break, or Heavy Storm in Sealed Pack.

Another great thing about Number 42 is that it isn’t a bad card to topdeck. The spell can buy you time to rebound from a bad situation and regain the momentum you need in a close duel.

Thanks for reading, and keep checking back at Metagame.com for more previews of the Flaming Eternity set. I hope that all your packs are lucky ones!
