Unfortunately, teammates sometimes face off against teammates in the Top 8. Both members of Comic Odyssey were paired up in the semifinal round, and faced the fact that only one member of their team would be moving on.
Game One
The first duel was a quick one, over in a few turns. Eric halved Wilson’s life points by Creature Swapping his Magician of Faith for Wilson’s Spirit Reaper, then attacking with Spirit Reaper and 2 Vampire Lords. On his next turn, he attacked again with one Vampire Lord, two Spirit Reaper, and issued a Call of the Haunted to fetch back Breaker for the final damage.
Game Two
Wilson went first, opening the longest duel of the match. Play inched along, with players picking slowly away at each other’s life points rather than slashing off large chunks. Eric made a bold bid to get 2 Vampire Lords in play at once by using Call of the Haunted to bring back a Pyramid Turtle from his graveyard and running it into a Creature Swapped Pyramid Turtle on Wilson’s side. Wilson wasn’t going to allow that, so he used Ring of Destruction on the attacking Turtle.
Eric moved against Wilson’s face-down Dark Balter the Terrible with Blade Knight, and WIlson activated Mirror Wall in response to save Balter. Whittling away at Eric’s life points, Wilson brought them to 0 and tied the match, necessitating a third duel.
Game Three
Eric went first, and this duel moved a bit faster. Life points drained away in somewhat larger increments than the second duel, up until Eric’s final turn. In an involved series of moves, Eric flip summoned Magician of Faith, took back Pot of Greed, activated it, summoned Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning, then activated Creature Swap, trading his attack position Magician of Faith for one of Wilson’s monsters, then attacking with Black Luster Soldier and the second monster to win the game.
Eric then moved on to face Evan Vargas in the semifinals. Although it was unfortunate that one teammate was obligated to eliminate another, they had still secured their spot in the semi finals, and were one step closer to yet another Cyber-Stein.
