Round 7: Mark “Waffle” Vazquez vs. Jonathan Labounty
Jason Grabher-Meyer

Mark Vazquez, AKA “Waffle,” is a local duelist representing South Florida. At nineteen years of age he’s flying the flag of Team Untouchable.

Jonathan Labounty is one of the most well-known members of Team Rampage, and at seventeen years of age has multiple Top 8 showings under his belt. Hailing from Waterbury, Connecticut, he’s a veteran of the SJC circuit. Today he’s playing the Rampage Chimeratech deck that is doing exceedingly well for the team.

He won the opening roll and activated Future Fusion to get things started, sending eleven Machines to his graveyard from his deck to put Chimeratech Overdragon on layaway. He then set a monster and ended. Vazquez set a monster, set two spell or trap cards and ended. Labounty flip summoned UFO Turtle, attacked, and hit Gravekeeper’s Spy. Vazquez special summoned another in defense position from his deck, Labounty set a second spell or trap and play was to his opponent.

He ended his turn immediately, and Labounty brought out Chimeratech. It targeted everything on his side of the field for destruction, but Labounty chained his set Enemy Controller to turn one of the Spies to attack position. He set a card to each zone to finish his turn.

Vazquez activated Soul Exchange to tribute Labounty’s set monster for Mobius the Frost Monarch, but Labounty chained his set Reckless Greed to draw two cards! Vazquez ended, Labounty set a spell or trap, passed, and Vazquez summoned Breaker the Magical Warrior. Breaker’s token was removed to target Labounty’s set spell or trap again, but it was Jar of Greed, and it too was chained. Vazquez attacked with Breaker, the two Spies, Mobius, and then activated Ring of Destruction to destroy Mobius and finish the duel!

The duel ends very quickly, with a flurry of attacks resulting in victory for the Waffle!

Both players smokescreened extensively before shuffling and presenting their decks to the opponent. Both opted to pile shuffle, and the second duel began.

Labounty started things off by setting two back row cards, and Vazquez pegged him with Confiscation on the following turn. It revealed Labounty’s hand: Overload Fusion, Limiter Removal, Dimension Fusion, and Giant Trunade. He discarded his opponent’s Overload, set two cards himself and ended. Labounty set a monster and passed back.

Soul Exchange hit Vazquez’s side of the table, tributing Labounty’s set UFO Turtle for Mobius again. Labounty chained Reckless Greed and Enemy Controller, drawing two cards and turning Mobius to defense position! Vazquez announced that he was finished with his turn and Labounty started running numbers. “That’s game” he announced. He activated Giant Trunade, but Vazquez responded with Solemn Judgment! Labounty set UFO Turtle, lost it next turn to Zaborg and took 2400 damage. Labounty set another monster and passed back.

Another Soul Exchange allowed Vazquez to tribute Labounty’s set Magician of Faith for Cyber Dragon. Labounty summoned Cyber Phoenix, set a spell or trap and ended.

Zaborg attacked the Cyber Phoenix, but Labounty chained Limiter Removal! Both monsters were destroyed, Labounty took a draw for Phoenix and Cyber Dragon hit directly. Vazquez then tributed Cyber Dragon for Thestalos the Firestorm Monarch. Labounty set a monster and passed.

Vazquez summoned Sangan, keeping the pressure coming with an attack from Thestalos. It hit UFO Turtle, and Labounty summoned another Cyber Phoenix to cut Sangan off from attacking. Vazquez ended, Labounty set a monster and turned Phoenix to defense. Vazquez summoned D. D. Warrior Lady, Thestalos attacked Phoenix, the Lady hit Labounty’s set Dekoichi, and Sangan hit directly.

It was 3500 to 2500, with Vazquez in the lead.

Labounty special summoned Cyber Dragon and tributed it for Jinzo — Vazquez activated another Solemn Judgment, negating Jinzo’s summoning! Labounty took a quick glance at his hand and offered Vazquez the hand shake almost immediately. There was no saving the match.

Mark Vazquez shuts Jonathan Labounty down with a vicious pair of Solemn Judgments, moving on undefeated!
