Coming into this round, both players have six wins and likely needed to win this match to stay in Top 8 contention.
Game 1
Ryan won the opening roll and elected to go first. He started off with Graceful Charity, discarding Kycoo and Raigeki Break. He then set a face-down card and a monster and ended his turn. Hugo pondered over his cards before deciding to summon Morphing Jar in attack mode and attacking into Ryan’s Magician of Faith. Ryan got back Graceful Charity in an attempt to further his advantage. Hugo played Delinquent Duo, managing to discard the newly returned Graceful, and Ryan dropped Scapegoat. Hugo finished his turn with three face-down cards. Ryan set most of his hand and then attacked the Morphing Jar with a newly summoned Breaker. Hugo had a Book of Moon for the Jar, though, and both players drew new hands.
Hugo started his turn with Reinforcement of the Army for a D.D. Assailant. Secretly wishing for a Heavy Storm, Hugo played Graceful Charity and then studied his options. He dropped two D.D. Assailants and then played Pot of Greed. He set three more cards and a monster and then passed the turn. Ryan thought very carefully about his next move before finally deciding to play it aggressively by summoning Tribe-Infecting Virus. Breaker attacked Hugo’s face-down monster and Hugo did not respond, allowing Sinister Serpent to be destroyed. Tribe swung directly for 1600, and Ryan passed the turn over to Hugo. At the end of the turn, Hugo activated Royal Decree, and Ryan responded with a Mystical Space Typhoon. Still in the end phase, Hugo used Call of the Haunted to get back Dark Magician of Chaos and then recovered Graceful Charity.
Hugo played it on his turn and discarded Sinister Serpent along with a Blade Knight. He then played Snatch Steal on the Virus, and Ryan had no response. Hugo suicided the Virus into the counterless Breaker, set a monster, and passed. Ryan summoned a D. D. Warrior Lady and ran it into Hugo’s face-down Apprentice Magician, allowing him to special summon a Magician of Faith with its effect. Visibly disappointed, Ryan entered main phase two and used his own Call to bring back Tribe and discard it to destroy Spellcasters. Hugo was ready for it with a Book of Moon, and he used it to save his Magician.
Hugo was just about ready to go for the kill, so he started by flipping his Magician of Faith to grab a Graceful Charity. He played it and discarded Sinister and D. D. Warrior Lady. To the crowd’s surprise, he set two cards and then played Card Destruction. Having drawn through nearly his entire deck, Hugo played Metamorphosis, turning his Magician into a Gatling Dragon. He activated its effect and flipped two heads, destroying both of Ryan’s monsters. He then attacked, only to be stopped by a Scapegoat. He attacked two sheep and ended.
Ryan knew he was in trouble and attempted to play for time with Swords of Revealing Light, a face-down card, and a defense monster. On Hugo’s draw, Ryan flipped Ring of Destruction to take out the Gatling Dragon before it could munch up his sheep. Hugo took a few moments to think before removing Light and Dark to summon Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning. He used its effect to remove Ryan’s Magician of Faith from the game, but without any way to get rid of the Swords, he was forced to set a monster and another card and end.
Ryan looked at his rapidly diminishing options and finally decided to play Monster Reincarnation to get Injection Fairy Lily back from his graveyard before ending his turn. Hugo destroyed the Swords with Mystical Space Typhoon, flipped Sangan over, and attacked a sheep. Ryan topdecked Pot of Greed and played it. He set a monster and ended his turn. The Soldier took out Ryan’s Hand of Nephthys, and Sangan switched to defense mode. Ryan set a monster and ended.
Black Luster Soldier continued to terrorize the field with his effect, and this time, Asura Priest bought the farm. With full spell slots, Hugo looked for a way to go on the offensive with minimal risk. Eventually he decided to have the Soldier remove itself from play. He then summoned Tribe-Infecting Virus, and it tried to attack. Sakuretsu Armor put a stop to that, so Sangan brought the hurt instead. All Ryan could do was set a monster, end, and hope that Hugo decked out before he could kill him.
With only four cards left in Hugo’s deck, it looked like that might happen. With just three cards left, Hugo flipped his trump card, Return from the Different Dimension, bringing back a rather large army of monsters. He played Graceful Charity one last time, drawing the rest of his deck, and finally got to his Heavy Storm. Ryan chained Scapegoat, hoping that Hugo couldn’t get rid of the sheep. Hugo needed to do 4400 damage before the end of the turn, but he couldn’t, so Ryan pulled out the win.

Game 2
Hugo opted not to side deck at all, but Ryan used about half of his side. Game 2 began with a bit more than ten minutes left on the clock, which meant that the players needed to pick up the pace to avoid being called on time. Hugo opted to begin the game and he started with a set spell or trap. Ryan opened strong with Graceful Charity, discarding Apprentice Magician and Mirror Force. Sangan tried to attack, but Scapegoat and its tokens blocked the way. He then set two cards and ended.
Hugo Heavy Stormed, and Ryan chained with Ring of Destruction to blow up his Sangan, fetching Injection Fairy Lily and Scapegoat to clog his field. Hugo set a card and had to pass. Ryan topdecked Pot of Greed and played it. Things weren’t looking to good for Hugo, but Ryan had nothing to attack with, so he set a monster and passed his turn. Ryan played Card Destruction, hoping to find an answer to his troubles, and Graceful Charity smiled on him. He tossed out The Warrior Returning Alive and D. D. Warrior Lady and followed it up with Pot of Greed and Metamorphosis on a sheep token, flinging himself back into the game.
He sucked up Ryan’s face-down monster with the fresh Thousand-Eyes Restrict, set a card, and passed. Ryan couldn’t do anything about it, so he had to pass his turn while Hugo looked to press his advantage. He couldn’t, though, and had to set a monster and pass. Nobleman of Crossout took care of the monster, but the game was still seriously stalled. Hugo tried to speed things back up by using a Book of Moon on his Thousand-Eyes during Ryan’s end phase. On his turn, Hugo flipped it back up and sucked up a sheep, destroying it. He then tributed it and his face-down monster to bring out the Dark Magician of Chaos and used its effect to return Heavy Storm to his hand. Torrential Tribute blew up the field, and the game continued.
Ryan played his Monster Reincarnation to bring back Mobius the Frost Monarch, then set a monster face down. Hugo flipped over Heavy Storm, prompting Ryan to chain Scapegoat. Time was quickly running out, and Hugo just couldn’t seem to take hold of the game. Asura Priest was flipped over and attacked a Magician of Faith. Hugo played the returned Graceful Charity and then brought out Airknight Partshath via Premature Burial. A Mystical Space Typhoon took it out, however, and the stalemate continued. Ryan tried to break it by using Premature Burial on a Sangan and tributing it for Mobius to destroy Hugo’s face-down spells and traps. It attacked into a Morphing Jar, and both players’ hands were reloaded.
Hugo seemed to have gotten a break, but his Delinquent Duo dropped an Elephant Statue of Disaster into the graveyard, dealing 2000 damage to Hugo. Hugo still couldn’t seem to get anything, but he did summon Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning and remove a face-down monster from play. Ryan passed, and BLS removed an Apprentice Magician. The clock was still ticking, and the players’ decks were running low. Hugo was in a race against time to try to even the score, so he attacked into a Sakuretsu Armor.
Book of Moon saved the Soldier, and Ryan took a knee, trying to protract his turn as long as possible without incurring a penalty. Hugo used Nobleman of Crossout on Ryan’s face-down monster and then attacked with BLS again, prompting yet another Scapegoat. Return from the Different Dimension brought out an army of monsters that tried as hard as they could to take out Ryan’s remaining life points as time ran out.
Hugo desperately searched for a way to take Ryan out, and he looked to his Magician and D.D. Assailant to try to push through the last bit of damage. Ryan flipped over a Call of the Haunted to stop the assault, bringing back Injection Fairy Lily. After some quick math by Hugo, he realized that by attacking Lily with the Assailant he could get her out of the game and leave a clear field for Dark Magician of Chaos to win with, kissing his teddy bear as he did so.

Game 3
After an intense game 2, Hugo managed to pull out a win to force the match into a sudden death game three. The first change in life points would decide the game, so both players side decked furiously to try to get the best possible opening hand. Everyone could feel the intensity between these two great players as they prepared for the turns that would decide who would still have a shot at the Top 8.
Ryan had the choice to go first in this game and he did so. They quickly shook hands before starting, and Ryan opened with Graceful Charity. He discarded Apprentice Magician and Enemy Controller, setting three cards and a monster. None of them were Ceasefire, and the game continued. Hugo looked for an opportunity to try to end the game right then and there. He started with a Nobleman of Crossout to eliminate Ryan’s monster, then decided to play it safe with a face-down monster of his own before setting three spell or trap cards. During the end phase, Ryan used Dust Tornado on Hugo’s Metamorphosis and Raigeki Break on Hugo’s Scapegoat. He used one more Raigeki Break to clear the monster from the field, then summoned Sangan and attacked for the win.
Ryan Cerda wins 2-1. |
