Baltimore Shonen Jump TCG Championship Series Tournament

Shane Scurry has done it! Exploding out of the shadows of Carlos Santiago and Paul Levitin, he’s managed to break into his first Shonen Jump Championship Top 8, and has claimed victory in the name of Team Scoop after three rounds of intense dueling!

Scurry’s first match pitted him against Roy St. Clair, and some unfortunate luck for Roy, combined with aggressive play and intelligent side decking, sealed the match for Scurry. He then moved on to play Chris Winkler, who ran a Strike Ninja build that borrowed elements from both American and European conventions. The matchup arguably favored Scurry to begin with, but some highly intelligent play from Winkler pressed the match to a third duel before Scurry managed to end it. Heavy Storm with a chained Return from the Different Dimension won the match in high style.

Finally, Scurry faced off against Canadian Chris Pittao, representing Team Xtreme. Pittao won the first duel in under five minutes, and Scurry returned the favor just as fast! But the third and final game was long, intense, and eventually Pittao had to concede. After more than fifteen passed turns in which no cards were played, each duelist’s deck had been taxed to the breaking point, and Pittao ran out of cards first, making Shane Scurry your newest Shonen Jump Champion!

The new format has proven to be highly aggressive, but a variety of decks have flourished. The Top 8 featured Chaos, Monarch, Strike Ninja, and Return from the Different Dimension decks, spelling out good things for the health of the current environment. There was also an incredible amount of tech: Mirage Dragon, Des Lacooda, Spell Shield Type-8, Brain Control, Twin-Headed Behemoth, and even Asura Priest all made a significant impact on the last three rounds of the tournament, giving duelists a lot of splashable thoughts to mull over as they build decks over the coming weeks.

And no one who took the Scrub Brush Challenge managed to make the Top 8. Sniff!

Shonen Jump Championship Columbus is exactly four weeks away, and now that we’ve got a good view of what’s possible in the new Advanced format, things are going to heat up. Be here on Saturday, May 6, to see how it all goes down at the site of the largest Shonen Jump Championship of all time!

Day 2
It all comes down to this! America versus Canada! Team Scoop versus Team Xtreme! Shane Scurry versus Chris Pittao!
Chris Pittao sat and shuffled as Steve approached the table and sat down. “Hey! We’re by each other again!” said Steve.
After ripping through Roy St. Clair, Scurry was ready for his next opponent. The fan favorite for the win here at the venue, he was now in a tricky matchup.
Fate had pitted two previous teammates from the short-lived ScoopForce alliance against one another.
Chris Pittao of Windsor, Ontario (representing Team Xtreme) sat across from Jonathan LaBounty of Waterbury, CT (representing Team Rampage) and waited for the match to begin.

Anyone can post on a forum claiming that he or she will take a Top 8 spot at a Shonen Jump Championship, but we found nine players to put their money where their mouths are. Follow along with our Scrub Brush Challenge!
After making Day 2 in four Shonen Jump Championships and winning in Las Vegas, Wilson Luc has endured a long string of disappointing Shonen Jump performances, including several round 1 losses that knocked him out of contention.
The repairing of round 9 found Luis Morillo again in the hot seat, but this time instead of Shonen Jump Champion Paul Levitin, he was facing Shonen Jump Champion Anthony Alvarado.
Nareg Torossian was the champion of Shonen Jump Indianapolis last year, but since then, he’s been unable to match his previous performance. With a 6-1 record here today, things are starting to look up for this young independent duelist.
Undefeated 6-0 records had brought these two celebrity duelists together to compete.
There’s a bit of time between now (we’re in Round 6) and the beginning of Round 7, when we’ll start to do feature match coverage. Given this brief respite, I figured it would be a good chance to take a quick look at what anticipated play trends materialized today, and which ones did not.
Shane Scurry is one of Team Scoop’s greatest duelists, but he often gets overshadowed by Paul Levitin and Carlos Santiago when it comes time to do coverage. He deserves more credit than he receives, and today he’s earned it.
Ameen Bahar, a member of both Team Crew!! and Team Revolution, has perhaps the most experience with Gravekeepers out of any North American duelist.
Everyone has eagerly anticipated this event, and now we get to see what big cards are popping up.
Andrew Bollinger is a familiar face to many members of the online Yu-Gi-Oh! community.
Since I tend to be a huge jinx to Paul Levitin, I’m taking a look at Carlos Santiago’s deck today instead.
Team Immortal Technique has what’s easily the most innovative deck here today. If it does well, they’ll set a major trend for the next six months. If it doesn’t, well, at least they’re going to go out in a blaze of glory.
