Round 2: Ameen Bahar vs. Nareg Torossian
Jason Grabher-Meyer

Another irresistible feature match! Ameen Bahar, former spokesman for Hunger Force, has now taken up with Team Revolution and made affiliations with “CREW!!” Nareg Torossian is no newcomer to the feature match table—he won Shonen Jump Indianapolis, and has been to many Shonen Jumps since.

He won the coin flip, and opted to begin the first duel, doing so with just a set spell or trap,. Bahar set one monster, passed right back, and saw it get immediately hit with Nobleman of Crossout, causing him to lose his Gravekeeper’s Spy! “I don’t run any,” announced Torrossian, as Bahar removed another from his deck. Torossian summoned Spirit Reaper, attacked with it directly, and forced Bahar to discard a copy of Thestalos the Firestorm Monarch.

“Ooh, Soul Control.” Torossian now felt he knew exactly what he was up against.

Bahar set a card to each zone and ended his turn. Torossian summoned Exiled Force, tributed it to destroy Bahar’s set Tsukuyomi, and attacked directly again to discard another card, which was Cyber Dragon! Bahar finally got rid of the Reaper on the following turn with Smashing Ground, but had nothing to follow up with. Torossian drew for his turn, summoned Sangan, and attacked with it. A turn later, Bahar used Brain Control on Sangan, tributed it away fro Thestalos, and discarded Torossian’s Mystic Tomato. Torossian took Spirit Reaper with Sangan’s effect, Thestalos swung directly, and Torossian was up after Bahar set another spell or trap.

Torossian summoned Spirit Reaper, played Smashing Ground to destroy Thestalos and stole another card from Bahar. A turn later he was doing the same thing with a Kycoo to back up the Reaper. Bahar was in trouble.

He topdecked nicely, and used Brain Control to take Kycoo and tributed it for Gravekeeper’s Chief. Sadly, there was nothing in Bahar’s graveyard to bring back with the Chief’s effect. It was all over two turns later: a flurry of monsters, including Cyber Dragon and D. D. Assailant, arrived on the field to finish Bahar off.

Both players started looking through their side decks. “I don’t even know what you’re running”, remarked Torossian, looking through his side deck. Though he had first solidly pegged Bahar as playing Soul Control, the Gravekeeper’s Chief was throwing him off.

“It’s called, ‘not getting any sleep, and finding that half your deck is taken apart’.” Bahar replied, laughing.

“I really haven’t seen much, I can’t side deck!” Torossian gave up, and decided not to modify his main deck at all. Bahar rotated in several cards before beginning game 2.

Bahar made a smarter opening this time around, setting a card to each of his zones. Torossian’s first play was Reinforcement of the Army, taking a copy of Mystic Sowrdsman LV2. He summoned it, attacked with it, and cleared out Bahar’s Gravekeeper’s Chief. Torossian set one spell or trap and said, “I end my turn.”

Bahar flopped Terraforming form his hand to take a copy of Necrovalley from his deck. He special summoned Cyber Dragon, attacked the Mystic Swordsman LV2 with it, and smacked right into Sakuretsu Armor. He had attempted to call Torossian’s bluff, but Torossian wasn’t bluffing. He had the support for Mystic Swordsman LV2 and used it, leaving Bahar wide open.

He kept the pressure on next turn, summoning Spirit Reaper. Both of his little monsters attacked Bahar, who lost Nobleman of Crossout. Bahar drew, set a spell or trap, and summoned Gravekeeper’s Spear Soldier. He activated Necrovalley, attacked the Reaper with Spear Soldier, and passed.

Torossian summoned Breaker the Magical Warrior and broke Necrovalley. Bahar fired back with Deck Devastation Virus, tributing away his Spear Soldier to destroy Spirit Reaper and Mystic Swordsman LV2. Breaker attacked directly, but next turn Bahar summoned Tsukuyomi, flipped Breaker face down with its effect, and attacked with Tsukuyomi to destroy it. Torossian lost Don Zaloog to Deck Devastation Virus on his draw and couldn’t play a monster.

Bahar attacked with a fresh D. D. Assailant, and next turn Torossian stole it with Snatch Steal for another direct attack. Bahar then summoned Breaker the Magical Warrior, used its token to destroy the Snatch Steal, and took baack his Assailant. He attacked with both, and ended his turn with two set cards.

Torossian drew Torrential Tribute, set it, and refused to summon a monster. Bahar special summoned Chaos Sorcerer on the following turn, and Torossian activated Torrential Tribute. He’d played right into Bahar’s hands. Bahar activated Royal Decree, and Torossian chained Call of the Haunted to bring back his Breaker and hopefully shield his life points. But Bahar flipped his last set card on the field – Brain Control! He took control of Breaker, and attacked with both of his monsters for the win!

“I was thinking about that…” remarked Torossian, acutely aware of the fact that his opponent could not have pulled out the win without using his own Breaker against him.

The match proceeded to game 3!

“Can I go first?” asked Bahar with a grin.

Torossian shot back a grin of his own and a quick “Nope!”

Torossian set a card to each zone and passed. He was mirrored by Bahar, who did the same. Torossian again used Reinforcement of the Army to fetch Mystic Swordsman LV2, and flip summoned Don Zaloog. He sent the Swordsman into the face down, but Bahar flipped Ceasefire! He played around Mystic Swordsman LV2’s effect beautifully, and dealt 1500 damage in the process. The Swordsman crashed into Assailant’s thick hide and Torossian had to end his battle phase—Don Zaloog wasn’t big enough to beat the defense-position Assailant. He activated Smashing Ground in the second main phase, though, ensuring that such a problem wouldn’t be an issue on his next turn.

Bahar summoned Chiron the Mage and sent it to attack. It hit Sakuretsu Armor. He set one spell or trap, leaving himself potentially vulnerable.

Torossian saw his chance and looked to press, activating Heavy Storm, but Bahar chained Scapegoat! Torossian’s clear path to advantage was blocked with Sheep tokens! He attacked two tokens, and Bahar swung back next turn with Gravekeeper’s Assailant destroying Don Zaloog. Torossian summoned D. D. Assailant, attacked the Gravekeeper’s Assailant, and blew it away while Mystic Swordsman hit a Sheep token. Bahar summoned Gravekeeper’s Spear Soldier, hit the Swordsman, and next turn lost it to Assailant. On the following turn he played Necrovalley, but didn’t have a monster to capitalize. Torossian summoned Spirit Reaper, hit the last Sheep with Assailant, and the Reaper stole Bahar’s Thestalos the Firestorm Monarch. It left him with only one card in hand.

The match was academic from there on out. Bahar fought back with Cyber Dragon, but D. D. Assailant removed it on the successive turn and Torossian followed it up with a Mystic Tomato. Bahar fended off the onslaught as best he could, but Exiled Force served to remove his last defense position monster a turn later, and it was game over.

Nareg Torossian moves one step closer to his second Shonen Jump Championship title!
