Round 2 saw Albert Lee and Wade Yoshida of Honolulu facing off. Albert Lee has won three Regional Championships here in Hawaii, and has been to Nationals twice. Wade has been invited to Nationals in the past but was never able to attend. Both players were pretty relaxed and ready to duel.
Wade won the roll and chose to go first.
Game 1
He started with Solar Recharge, discarding from his hand a Lumina, Lightsworn Summoner, then played Foolish Burial for Destiny Hero - Disk Commander. He then activated Monster Reborn targeting Disk Commander, drawing two cards. He summoned Jain, Lightsworn Paladin, set a back row card, and passed.
Albert played Heavy Storm, and then summoned Gladiator Beast Laquari, attacking Disk Commander. He then switched it out for Gladiator Beast Murmillo, destroying Wade’s Jain with Murmillo’s effect. He then set one back row card, and passed.
Wade played his own Heavy Storm destroying Albert’s set Mirror Force, and then played Solar Recharge again. Then came his Pot of Avarice, which got no response from Albert. Wade used Premature Burial on Disk Commander, going to 7200 and drawing 2 cards. He finished his turn by summoning Lumina and attacking Murmillo and Disk Commander, bringing Albert to 7700.
Albert then played Plasma, but Wade had Solemn Judgment (going to 3600). Albert passed with nothing on the field.
Wade used Lumina’s effect, discarding Wulf and special summoning it, and then attacked with his Wulf and Lumina, bringing Albert 4600.
Albert played Reinforcement of the Army for Prisma and played it, using its effect to send Bestiari to the graveyard. He then special summoned Test Tiger, used it to special summon Darius, then returned Bestiari to play with Darius. The inevitable contact Fusion for Gladiator Beast Gyzarus followed, destroying Lumina and Wulf. He attacked Disk Commander but Wade used Necro Gardna in his graveyard to negate the attack
Wade summoned Honest, attacked, and discarded another Honest in the damage step, destroying Gyzarus and bringing Albert to 3500. Wade returned Honest to his hand, set a back row card, and ended his turn.
Albert summoned Elemental Hero Stratos, but Wade used Solemn Judgment (dropping to 1800). Albert set a back row card and ended the turn.
Wade summoned Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress, but Albert’s set card was Bottomless Trap Hole, which removed her from play. Albert made Wade regret the life lost to Solemn Judgment on the next turn as he summoned Bestiari, special summoned Test Tiger to get Darius, and returned Gyzarus. He then attacked the Disk Commander with Darius and Wade with Gyzarus for the game.
Game 2
Wade chose to play first and the game went pretty fast. He summoned Jain, set 1 back row, and passed. Albert played Laquari, special summoned Test Tiger, and used it to change Laquari into Murmillo, destroying Jain. He then attacked into Wade’s Mirror Force. Ouch! He set 1 card to the back row and ended the turn.
Wade summoned Lumina, discarding Necro Gardna to special summon Jain. He attacked with both monsters, putting Albert now at 5200.
Albert summoned Bestiari and attacked Lumina, but Wade used the Necro Gardna in his graveyard to negate the attack.
Wade then played Premature Burial, going to 7200, for Lumina, then discarded Wulf to get back Lyla, and used Lyla to destroy Albert’s set card. What was it? A Crush Card Virus!
Wade used his other Lumina to get Wulf, and Albert said, “Show me Honest.” When Wade revealed the one in his hand, Albert picked up his cards for game 3.
Game 3
The shortest game of the day, and Albert chose to play. He set 1 back row card and passed with no monster.
Wade’s big turn was the last turn of the game and match.
He started with Solar Recharge, discarding Lumina. He then played Foolish Burial for Wulf, bringing it to the field, then tributed it for Celestia, Lightsworn Angel, destroying Albert’s set card, a Dimensional Prison. He then special summoned Judgment Dragon, played Monster Reborn for Lumina, and special summoned Wulf from his graveyard with it.
Amazing.
Wade only had to say, “Yay!” Albert said, “Wow.”
And that was match.
