I used to see Robert all the time when the mall tour was running, but I haven’t run into him for a while, so it was great to get to see him again at this Shonen Jump. We caught up a bit in an interview, and I got to hear about his deck, his reaction to the event, and more.
Robert turned 25 on Monday, and is originally from Salt Lake City, Utah. He’s currently living in San Diego, and so he made a 120-mile drive to get to today’s event. He came with Mike Rosenberg and several other members of a newly-formed team, Anime Way. “Most of us are doing pretty well,” he said. “We’ve got three guys at 2-0, and 2 at 1-1.”
Robert says he has been playing Yu-Gi-Oh! since the game began in Japan. “I got into it due to boredom on base. I was TDY at Kunsab Air Base, Korea, and Yu-Gi-Oh! was just insanely popular with the local kids, it was a huge pastime. It was the one readily available TCG, so I got a rulebook and some cards and learned how to play. Actually, a lot of servicemen got into it. A lot of the cards were completely fake, though.”
For this event, Robert decided to play a Strike Ninja/Zombie combination. “I use Ryu Kokki and Vampire Lords, Dimension Fusion and Return From a Different Dimension. Strike Ninja has a removal element, and the D. D.’s are great for removing monsters from play. I’m 2-0, so it’s performing really well so far.” It’s an original build, and he hasn’t seen anything like it so far in the event. “Vampire Lord is everywhere, though—there are tons of Zombie decks out there today.”
Robert chose this deck because he felt it was a good answer to the Chaos format. Since the new Advanced format is getting a test run this weekend, it’s hard to know what to expect metagame-wise. “I felt like this deck could answer almost anything I faced.” For a side deck choice, Robert added Autonomous Action Unit. “I’ve been seeing a lot of Fire and Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys. When that’s in the graveyard, it’s easy for it to come back, so I like the option to get it first. It’s good against Black Luster Soldier, too, and in one match, it was great against Invader of Darkness.
Coming off of the second round, Robert had faced a Gravekeeper deck and a new Chaos hybrid. “My deck performed great against both of them—it really outpaced them. I was surprised to see the Gravekeeper deck, I was expecting to see a lot of Lockdown/Burn, but so far I haven’t seen it. It’s lots and lots of Zombies.”
Robert competed in the San Diego Regionals and Sneak Preview weekend, and was happy to see a Shonen Jump Championship relatively close to home. “I think the series is great,” he said. “Seeing this kind of turnout for any tourmanent is amazing, and it’s great having one this close, even if it is 120 miles away. You get competition here that you can’t get anywhere else.”
And finally, what about the Cyber-Stein? Everyone hopes to win it. What will Robert do if he manages to claim it? “If i win the Cyber-Stein, off it goes to eBay, to pay for my wedding. Actually, I really want the laptop, I need a new one badly.” |
