With all the complaints from top players about the element of luck involved in this game, it’s a breath of fresh air to talk to someone who relishes in the thrill of everything being able change with the turn of a card. Eben Wong Jr. is one such person, and he was nice enough to spare me some time between rounds.
Eben has been a mainstay of the east coast tournament scene from as long as I can remember. He’s been a fierce competitor from the very start, posting excellent records at nearly every tournament he’s been to, including at least one Top 8 at Regionals. He ran into a bit of trouble last round when a game he had fully under control got out of hand in a big way. “It’s frustrating, you know?” he said of the loss. Despite this, Eben is still having a great time playing at the SJC. “This is why I play, you know, the big tournaments,” he said.
Eben realizes that luck can sometimes be a huge factor in this game, but unlike most, he loves every second of it. “The thing about those other games, like Vs. System, is that after three or four turns you know what’s going to happen,” remarked Eben. “With this game, every card could change the entire course of the game, and I like that.” I asked him what he thought about the new Advanced format, and for the most part he’s very excited about it. He cites Fiber Jar and Change of Heart as being two of the peskiest cards in the game, and he’s quite glad that they’re gone now. He’s also happy that Chaos was knocked down a peg after losing Painful Choice from its repertoire.
His only complaint is that Delinquent Duo was brought back into the game. While he may be a gambling man, Eben places high value on strategy, as well. “I really liked The Forceful Sentry better,” he said. “It gave you a big tactical advantage over your opponent because you got to see his hand. Delinquent Duo doesn’t offer that.
Eben Wong is a great person to run into at any tournament—a true professional. He’s a great player, a great sport, and he has a real passion for the game. Here’s hoping that his limitless enthusiasm rubs off on the rest of the community! |
