This match featured two rising stars, both of whom are well-respected duelists within their circles. Brodie Heinrichsen hails from Arizona, and at 23 years of age he’s one of the members of Project D. here today running Chain Strike Burn. His opponent, 20 year-old Tim Perry, made waves weeks ago in Anaheim when he took a spot in the Top 8 with Dark World. Both of these duelists are undefeated, but for one of them, that status will be short-lived.
Perry won the opening roll and started off the match with a set card to each zone. “Go ahead,” he said, inviting Heinrichsen to take his turn. Heinrichsen had a lot of options, and took some time to plan his next few moves.
“I’ll set five,” he announced.
“Oh, it’s burn stuff, isn’t it,” said Perry. “I’ll active Heavy Storm, chain link 1.” Word had spread fast about the deck, fast enough that Perry knew he was handing over a valuable resource by giving his opponent a free chain link. Heinrichsen chained Ojama Trio, then Reckless Greed, then Chain Detonation as chain link 4. Chain Strike was link 5, and Heinrichsen couldn’t chain his last card, Dimension Wall. Perry lost 2500 life points and attacked with Spirit Reaper to discard Chain Detonation. He set a back row card, set a monster, and ended.
Heinrichsen set his three remaining cards to his back row and passed. Perry flip summoned his set Dekoichi the Battlechanted Locomotive to draw a card, and Heinrichsen blasted him with Just Desserts for 2500, fearing Jinzo. Perry tributed Spirit Reaper for Cyber Dragon, but Heinrichsen responded with Threatening Roar. Perry passed, Jar of Greed got Heinrichsen another card, and play was to him.
He’d drawn into Reckless Greed with his Jar, and set it. He passed, Perry’s Dekoichi the Battlechanted Locomotive was tributed for Goldd, Wu-Lord of Dark World, and Perry attacked with both of his monsters. Heinrichsen was down to 3300 life points, while Perry had 3000 remaining.
Heinrichsen flipped Reckless Greed and set all three of his in-hand cards. He passed, activated Just Desserts to dish out 2500 damage, and then activated Ceasefire to finish off his opponent.
Brodie Heinrichsen takes the first duel with a pair of Just Desserts, powered by Ojamas!
Both duelists spent some time side decking before shuffling up. “I’ll go first,” announced Perry. “Good luck.”
“You too,” said Heinrichsen. Perry opened with two set spell or trap cards and a set monster.
Heinrichsen opened again with five set spell or trap cards. However, when he ended his turn, Perry flipped Royal Decree! Then he tributed his set monster (Old Vindictive Magician) for Jinzo! He activated Graceful Charity, discarding Sillva, Warlord of Dark World and Royal Decree. Sillva was special summoned, and Heinrich ate two direct attacks. Perry set another card to his back row and ended. Heinrichsen needed a miracle.
He drew and looked at his hand. He threw in the towel after just a few seconds of consideration: “I’m going to have to let this one go. I’ll scoop this game.” He immediately began side decking.
Tim Perry takes the second duel in an instant, thanks to two of the best answers to Chain Strike Burn!
Heinrichsen opted to go first and opened with Tremendous Fire. He played a second after the first resolved, knocking Perry down to 6000 life points. He set two cards to his spell and trap zone and ended. Perry set two cards to his back row to match, set a monster and passed. Heinrichsen was up again.
He set a third card to his spell and trap zone and passed back. Perry summoned Exiled Force, attacked for 1000 and Heinrichsen took it. Perry activated Confiscation in his second main phase, and had to choose between Cyber Dragon or Mystical Space Typhoon: the choice was immediate and Cyber Dragon hit the graveyard. It was 5000 to 6000 with Heinrichsen leading.
Heinrichsen passed and when Exiled Force attacked again he flipped Scapegoat. Exiled attacked a Sheep token, Perry set another monster and play passed to his opponent.
Ceasefire flipped from Heinrichsen’s back row, flipping Perry’s set Old Vindictive Magician and Night Assailant! He dropped to 3500 life points. Heinrichsen set a third card, but lost it to Mystical Space Typhoon in the end phase: Offerings to the Doomed. It probably wasn’t what Perry had hoped to hit.
He summoned Spirit Reaper, but his opponent flipped Threatening Roar. Perry set another card to his back row, and when Heinrichsen drew he set his entire hand for a total of three cards in his spell and trap zone. Perry turned Reaper to defense, then turned Assailant and Old Vindictive to attack. The attacking monsters took down Heinrichsen’s remaining Sheep tokens.
Heinrichsen drew and set his last card, also to the spell and trap zone. Old Vindictive Magician attacked for a bit of damage, and Exiled and Night Assailant followed suit soon thereafter: Heinrichsen was down to 4350. “Go ahead,” said Perry.
A fifth card was set to Heinrichsen’s spell and trap zone! He nailed Perry with Secret Barrel in his draw phase, leaving Perry at just 1500 life points. He destroyed Exiled Force with Ring of Destruction and the last card to flip was Poison of the Old Man; Perry had no way to protect himself from its 800 damage!
