The heavy Yu-Gi-Oh! GX theme of Power of the Duelist continues today, as I reveal two cards for Syrus fans and “Roid”-fans everywhere.
Super Vehicroid Jumbo Drill
EARTH
Machine
Level 8
ATK: 3000
DEF: 2000
"Steamroid" + "Drillroid" + "Submarineroid"
A Fusion Summon of this card can only be conducted with the above Fusion Material Monsters. During battle between this attacking card and a Defense Position monster whose DEF is lower than the ATK of this card, inflict the difference as Battle Damage to your opponent's Life Points.
Vehicroid Connection Zone
Spell Card
Send to the Graveyard, from your side of the field or your hand, Fusion Material Monsters that are listed on a Fusion Monster with "Vehicroid" in its name and Special Summon that Fusion Monster from your Fusion Deck. (This Special Summon is treated as a Fusion Summon.) This Fusion Monster cannot be destroyed by the effects of Spells, Traps, and Effect Monsters, and its effects cannot be negated.
The first card, Super Vehicroid Jumbo Drill, isn’t anything too fancy. It’s a 3000 ATK beater that does piercing damage. While a fusion summon of it cannot use substitutes like King of the Swamp, it has no restrictions against getting it out with Metamorphosis and the like.
Vehicroid Connection Zone, on the other hand, gives Super Vehicroid Jumbo Drill some bonus effects. You couldn’t expect that fusion monster to be the only thing the “Roid” monsters were getting today, right?
As you can see from the first line of text on the Vehicroid Connection Zone, it’s effectively a Polymerization designed specifically for anything with “Vehicroid” in the name. At the moment, that means only Super Vehicroid Jumbo Drill, although we can probably expect more fusion monsters in the future that work with this card. We’ve seen short-cut fusion cards like this in previous sets, such as Dragon’s Mirror and Miracle Fusion from Cybernetic Revolution. Of course, those cards also let you fuse monsters from your graveyard. The Vehicroid Connection Zone still treats the summon as a fusion summon, but the fusion materials must be sent to the graveyard from your hand or field. It doesn’t possess the bonus convenience of Miracle Fusion.
Then again, Miracle Fusion didn’t have that fantastic last line of text in its effect box. Let me repeat it:
“This Fusion Monster cannot be destroyed by the effects of Spells, Traps, and Effect Monsters, and its effects cannot be negated.”
Wow. That line is so elegant and simple, yet the effect is so powerful and different from a lot of cards out there that you can’t help but drop your jaw at what it does! Most competitive tournament decks contain a wide variety of monster removal, and Vehicroid Connection Zone prevents it from having any effect on your Super Vehicroid Jumbo Drill, as long as it was fusion summoned with Vehicroid Connection Zone.
That limits a lot of your opponent’s options. Smashing Ground? Like that’s going to work on the tank you just played. Zaborg the Thunder Monarch? Ha-ha, that monster is really cute. Sakuretsu Armor? Mirror Force? They might just barely scratch your new Machine monster’s paint job.
The only concern with the effect of Vehicroid Connection Zone is that removal effects such as D. D. Warrior Lady and Chaos Sorcerer will still work. That’s a shame, but if your Machine monster was immune to those as well, you would bet that would make the “Roid” machines a tad bit unfair in the current format.
Because Vehicroid Connection Zone treats the summon as a fusion summon, that means that your Super Vehicroid Jumbo Drill has been “properly” summoned with it. Even if it’s removed from play by Chaos Sorcerer, you can special summon it back with Return from the Different Dimension or Dimension Fusion. This is something you normally don’t see, since so many fusion monsters are summoned “improperly” with Metamorphosis.
To all of those attending one of the Power of the Duelist Sneak Preview events, be sure to have fun this weekend. Good luck, and I hope your packs give you good cards. Hopefully I’ll see some of you at the San Diego Concourse this weekend!
