Promos, Play Formats, and Prizes at the Enemy of Justice Sneak Previews!
Jason Grabher-Meyer

Here at Metagame.com, we’ve spent the better part of two weeks showing you plenty of reasons to head out to your local Enemy of Justice Sneak Preview event this weekend. Cards like Majestic Mech – Ohka, Voltanis the Adjudicator, and Macro Cosmos have hopefully gotten you excited about this new release. But what about the prizes?

Yeah, that’s right. Just like the Sneak Preview events before it, the Enemy of Justice Sneak Preview is going to reward you for getting your hands on the new cards weeks before their official street date by giving you more free stuff. I won’t argue with it, because like you, I enjoy being showered with free goods and services. Let’s take a look at the swag you can pick up at your Sneak Preview.

Let’s Look at the Loot!

First, every attendee will get a copy of the newest promo edition Yu-Gi-Oh! manga. Titled Dark Magician Battle!, it’s packed with the dueling action that you’ve come to expect from Yugi and his friends. It’s also packed with a never-before-seen promo card, but we’ll take an in-depth look at that a bit later.

Before we do, check out the awesome Enemy of Justice t-shirts that are on offer this time around. The preview-exclusive threads are always a favorite for collectors and fans of the animated series, and this one is no exception. It stars Elemental Hero Shining Phoenix Enforcer, one of Aster Phoenix’s new Elemental Hero monsters. It’s a darker spin on Jaden Yuki’s Elemental Hero Shining Flare Wingman, and like Shining Flare, it’s a Fusion that’s derived from Elemental Hero Sparkman, Elemental Hero Burstinatrix, and Elemental Hero Avian. The catch? Aster Phoenix’s shadowy nature has tinted the Fusion materials, creating an entirely different monster altogether.

When Aster shows up at Duel Academy in season 2 of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, he’s going to make a huge impact. The cool thing is that Enemy of Justice will let you play with his monsters before he appears on TV, giving you a jump on all the action. The Shining Phoenix Enforcer t-shirts are only going to be available in limited quantities, so if you have a chance to get one, give it a shot! Your event’s tournament organizer is going to determine exactly how you’ll be able to win one, so contact him or her in advance if you want to nail down the details. I know in my area, they’re given out as event winner awards and door prizes, which means anybody
who shows up could win a shirt.

Get to the Promo Already!

Okay, back to the promo card. This time around, every duelist who attends and competes is going to get a copy of Toon Dark Magician Girl, one of the classic monsters from the original Yu-Gi-Oh! animated series and manga. It’s a pretty cool nod to fans of the original show, and it’s another entry in the list of “classic” Yu-Gi-Oh! promos that have been released lately. That’s cool, because it means that no matter which Yu-Gi-Oh! series you prefer, there’s always going to be something new for you around the bend.

But maybe card value and collectability aren’t enough for you. Maybe you’re sitting at home saying, “A Toon? Who plays with those?” Well, my surly friend, let me assure you that Toon Dark Magician Girl is probably the best Toon ever printed. Like some of its pen-and-ink brethren, it requires Toon World to be on the field when it’s summoned, and if Toon World gets destroyed, then Toon Dark Magician Girl goes down with the ship. But like all Toons, it can attack the opponent directly, and unlike comparable Toon monsters, it’s ready for action the moment it hits the field. Toon Dark Magician Girl can attack the turn it comes into play, and you don’t have to pay any life points to send it into battle!

That’s awesome, because Toon Dark Magician Girl’s size and kawaii appearance are misleading. Its adorable little curlicue staff packs a 2000 ATK wallop, making it an A-1 game-ender regardless of how many monsters the opponent has out. It can get even bigger, too, gaining 300 ATK for every copy of Dark Magician in your graveyard. With 1700 DEF, this single-tribute Dark Spellcaster gives Toon decks a serious boost.

How It All Goes Down

Have we tempted you enough already? You’re probably itching to go to your Enemy of Justice Sneak Preview now, but if it’s your first time, you might not know exactly what to expect. Don’t worry—we’ve all been there.

You’ll get five boosters of Enemy of Justice, and from those packs you’ll have to build a deck of at least 20 cards. Then, you’ll play off against other duelists like you would at a normal tournament. The main format will be Open Play—all you have to do is duel a few competitors like yourself. Win or lose, once you’ve played enough duels, you’ll get a sixth pack of Enemy of Justice just for competing.

Some locations may offer a more competitive environment in addition to Open Play. In these tournaments, placing well will earn you more packs of the new set. With a bit of luck, you can quickly rack up a lot of boosters. You'll want to contact your local tournament organizer to find out if this will be offered at your event.

Sneak Previews draw huge numbers of duelists and collectors, with many recent events bringing in attendance numbers of 1000 or more. That makes them a hotbed of trading and dueling activity, so it’s a really fun social experience and a great way to find some deals. A lot of people are going to be looking for select singles from the set, so get ready to hear some offers on your new cards. At the same time, if you’re looking to pick up some of the new hotness yourself, don’t be discouraged if you can’t crack what you want in your boosters. Lots of people will be willing to trade off some of their fresh finds for older cards they need.

Sneak Previews are all about having fun and hanging out. While competition can get heated in the higher rounds of tournaments, everything’s usually pretty relaxed, and it’s a great chance for you to meet other people who enjoy the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game. It’s a totally different experience from a Regional tournament or a Shonen Jump Championship, and there’s really something for everybody.

Check out the official list of Sneak Preview venues here to find the closest event in your area. If you’re especially lucky, you might even find that there are multiple Sneak Previews within driving distance. Hit up two Previews, and you’ll come away with twice the swag.

We’ll keep counting down top entries from Enemy of Justice throughout the week, so keep checking back with us here at Metagame.com for more info on how to get the most out of your new cards!

P.S. If you’re in the greater Toronto area, stop by the Hamilton Sneak Preview and say hi! I’ll be there judging, probably getting mobbed by hundreds of duelists who are willing to trample me to get their hands on some brand-new cards.
