“While most fused monsters are spell-born, the Magical Scientist’s fused monsters are born of science. He can genetically engineer numerous copies of a fused monster as ordered by his clientele. While he does so with swift efficiency, it is well known that his creations often self-destruct.”
Magical Scientist has reached a legendary status in Yu-Gi-Oh! When it was released, Magical Scientist was just an ordinary common in the Magician’s Force set—but when this Spellcaster’s power was finally realized, it exploded into the tournament scene. Magical Scientist and the massive Fusion decks that accompany it show no signs of leaving competitive play any time soon.
However, tournament play of Magical Scientist has caused problems. Some players aren’t sure how Magical Scientist interacts with other cards. In addition, some players aren’t sure of which fusion monsters they can special summon with the Spellcaster’s effect.
This week, I’ll explain how to use Magical Scientist. I’ll also discuss some common mistakes duelists make when dealing with this Spellcaster.
Bio-Engineering
Magical Scientist’s effect reads: “Pay 1000 Life Points to Special Summon 1 level 6 or lower Fusion Monster from your Fusion Deck in face-up Attack or Defense Position.” This means you can’t bring out B. Skull Dragon with Magical Scientist’s effect, because fusion monsters with more than six stars are invalid targets. While monsters like Twin-Headed Thunder Dragon and Master of Oz are off-limits, Ojama King and Sanwitch are fair game.
Magical Scientist’s effect can only be activated during your main phase. You can use the effect more than once during the same turn as long as you can afford to pay for it. Keep in mind that you don’t declare which fusion monster you’re special summoning until the Scientist’s effect resolves. Your opponent will be in for a surprise!
Some fusion monsters have restrictions and can’t be special summoned by Magical Scientist’s effect. For example, Magical Scientist can’t special summon the various XYZ monsters, because these monsters can only be special summoned a certain way—they can’t be special summoned by any other method. Be sure to read each card’s text to figure out whether a monster can be special summoned by Magical Scientist.
Some fusion monsters that appear to be off-limits to Magical Scientist are actually fair game. Many players have the mistaken impression that Dark Balter the Terrible, Ryu Senshi, and Fiend Skull Dragon can’t be special summoned by Magical Scientist. While these monsters have specific instructions about how they’re fusion summoned, these instructions have nothing to do with what Magical Scientist does.
DNA-Sequencing Error
Part of Magical Scientist’s effect is that, once it special summons a fusion monster, that fusion monster can’t attack an opponent’s life points directly. Reaper on the Nightmare is no exception to this rule. Even though Reaper’s card text says that it can attack your opponent directly, Magical Scientist’s restriction on fusion monster attacks wins out. In addition, Magical Scientist prevents you from special summoning Fusionist and then using Secret Pass to the Treasures so the fusion monster can attack an opponent’s life points directly.
Be careful when deciding which fusion monsters to special summon and what to do with them. I’ve often watched helplessly as a player special summoned Thousand-Eyes Restrict, absorbed an opponent’s only monster, and found out the hard way that Thousand-Eyes Restrict can’t make a direct attack.
Self-Destructing Proteins
Another part of Magical Scientist’s effect is that fusion monsters special summoned by the Scientist are returned to the fusion deck during the end phase of the turn in which they were brought out. Fusion monsters that were sent to the graveyard do not return to the fusion deck.
All fusion monsters brought out by Magical Scientist have two restrictions placed on them. They can’t attack an opponent directly, and they must go back to the fusion deck during the same turn that they were special summoned. These restrictions are independent of Magical Scientist, so removing the Scientist from the field or turning it face down doesn’t help the fusion monsters. In addition, negating the Scientist’s effect with Skill Drain after you special summon a fusion monster won’t change the restrictions on that monster. Negating Magical Scientist’s effect doesn’t remove the conditions. What you need to do is focus on removing the restrictions from the fusion monster itself.
You can remove the restrictions by turning a fusion monster face down with Book of Moon. As soon as a fusion monster is flipped face down, that monster is freed from all conditions placed on it. Therefore, fusion monsters you flip face down won’t have to return to the fusion deck. A great follow-up play is to activate Book of Taiyou to return a fusion monster to face-up attack position. Because the fusion monster was freed from the restrictions placed on it by Magical Scientist, it can now attack your opponent directly.
You could also remove a fusion monster from play with a card like Dimensionhole or Interdimensional Matter Transporter. Removing a fusion monster from play will free that monster from the conditions placed on it by Magical Scientist.
Other Issues
Some of you might have noticed the ruling on the official FAQ that says you can’t activate the effect of Magical Scientist while Jowgen the Spiritualist is face up on the field. Magical Scientist’s effect has no possibility of resolving when Jowgen is face up, because Jowgen prevents monsters from being special summoned. Players can’t activate effects that have no way to resolve.
You also can’t activate the Scientist’s effect if you don’t have room for the fusion monster in your monster zone. Again, you can’t activate the effect because it has no possibility of resolving.
You should be aware that Magical Scientist’s effect doesn’t target the fusion monster it special summons. This fact ordinarily doesn’t have a real impact on the game. Keep in mind that you don’t reveal the fusion monster you plan to special summon until the Scientist’s effect is resolved. Your opponent will need a psychic to figure out what you’re going to do.
I hope that this article has helped clear up how to use Magical Scientist to its fullest potential. Until next week, the Scientist’s operators are standing by. |
