Round 4: Brad Poth vs. Nick Huskey
Julia Hedberg

Brad stopped by earlier to show me a rather interesting combo-driven deck that had gone 2-1. “My only loss was a Ben Kei OTK!” I wanted to see it in action, so when round 4 rolled around, I decided to feature the match. Brad is 26 and traveled here from Austin, Texas, while 21-year-old Nick hails from Severville, Tennessee.

Game 1

This was the first feature of the day, and both players were ready to show the world what they had. “This is my first ever tournament,” Nick mentioned casually as they shuffled and set up. “Mine too,” grinned Brad. “Nah, I’m kidding.” Brad won the high roll and opted to go first. Drawing, he squinted at his hand and grumbled a bit. It wasn’t what he wanted to see, but he set a monster card, then a spell or trap and ended. Nick drew, looked through his hand, and then duplicated Brad’s actions.

Brad still didn’t have his combo, and resorted to filling up his field by setting two more spells or traps and one more monster. Nick wasn’t ready to go either, and ended after drawing his card.

Brad drew, and looked at his hand. “Hmmm . . . that’s not good . . . ” he muttered, thinking over his options. He checked his set cards. “Not good at all . . . ” Since he was running a synergy-driven deck, he needed certain cards to get things going. He flip summoned Morphing Jar to pick up two cards, losing Spirit Reaper and Hino Kage Tsuchi. Nick lost a hand of five, including Spirit Reaper, Magician of Faith, Vampire Lord, Premature Burial, and Creature Swap. Brad still didn’t have what he needed, and ended his turn.

Nick struck back with Heavy Storm, wiping out Brad’s Scapegoat, Big Bang Shot, and Enemy Controller. “Oh . . . nice! Nice! I was getting ready to use those!” Brad laughed. Nick had given up his own Bottomless Trap Hole, but considered it a fair exchange. After using Smashing Ground to get rid of Morphing Jar, Nick attacked Brad’s Sangan with D. D. Warrior Lady, removing them both. He attacked with Spirit Reaper, set another spell or trap, and ended.

Brad fell back into defense and set a spell or trap, a monster, and activated Swords of Revealing Light, resulting in a few turns of conservative play. Soon Nick was ready for action, and flip summoned Morphing Jar, costing Brad a handful of his combo-dependent cards, including Messenger of Peace, Hino-Kage-Tsuchi, and Brain Control. He then played Dark Hole, set a monster and a spell or trap, and ended.

Brad drew, hoping for something that would help him. He’d lost a lot of his cards already, and needed to recoup his ground. He played Giant Trunade, and then used Nobleman of Crossout to remove Nick’s Sangan. He attacked directly with Spirit Reaper, depriving Nick of his Book of Moon. “That’s messed up,” Brad commiserated as he set Swords of Revealing Light, an additional spell or trap, and ended his turn. Nick retaliated by killing off Spirit Reaper with Smashing Ground, set another monster, and ended.

Brad went on the aggressive and summoned Breaker the Magical Warrior, eliminated Nick’s Sakuretsu Armor, and attacked D. D. Assailant. Nick passed his next turn, and Brad continued the offensive, summoning D. D. Survivor. He attacked D. D. Assailant, and Nick responded with Call of the Haunted—only to have it stopped cold by Brad’s Royal Decree.

Nick set another monster, fully aware that this was his Last Turn on Swords. Brad attacked his set Pyramid Turtle with D. D. Assailant. Another Turtle took its place, and Brad switched Breaker to defense and ended.

Nick readied his zombie hordes, using Book of Life to bring out Vampire Lord and remove Brad’s Mystic Tomato. Vampire Lord took out D. D. Survivor, and the Turtle sent Breaker off the field. Brad drew, and looked at his field—empty except for Royal Decree. Life points were at 7500 for Brad and 6100 for Nick. Brad flip summoned Magician of Faith, returning Swords of Revealing Light to his hand. He summoned D. D. Assailant, aware that the game was not going the way he wanted it to.

Nick turned Turtle to defense position, and used Snatch Steal to take Brad’s Magician of Faith. “Here it comes! Metamorphosis! Thousand Eyes!” Brad wasn’t disappointed—or was, depending on how you look at it—for that is exactly what Nick proceeded to do. “Nice, very deadly,” said Brad, as his D. D. Assailant crossed sides.

Thousand-Eyes Restrict and Swords of Revealing Light slowed the next few turns down, as both players worked on building up their fields. When Swords of Revealing Light ran down, Brad had one set monster and a Gilasaurus staring down Nick’s Thousand-Eyes Restrict equipped with D. D. Assailant, a brace of Vampire Lords, and a defense position Pyramid Turtle. Nick attacked the Gilasaurus. On his next turn, he activated Nobleman of Crossout, taking out Brad’s Cyber Jar. “Metamorphosis and a Nobleman!” Brad exclaimed. Nick attacked directly, bringing the Brad’s life point total to 5800 against his own 6100. He continued to attack directly for the next few turns, until Brad turned the tide with Reload to get Exiled Force. He tributed it to take out Thousand-Eyes Restrict, then used Premature Burial to bring it back and take out Pyramid Turtle. Snatch Steal gained him a Vampire Lord, which he suicided into the other, completely clearing Nick’s field.

Brad’s deck was running low at this point, and both players moved to a defensive style of play, setting cards and ending for several turns. Nick finally summoned Breaker, took out Brad’s Call of the Haunted, and attacked his set D. D. Assailant. He finished up his turn by eliminating Brad’s Torrential Tribute.

Brad drew, and looked at his dwindling deck. With less than five cards remaining, he was close to the end, and Nick knew it. After a few skirmishes between D. D. Assailants, Nick pulled back, realizing that Brad could not come back. With one card left in his deck, Brad conceded, making Nick the winner of game 1.

Game 2

Neither player opted to side deck, and Brad again went first. He repeated his previous opening move, by setting one of each card type and ending. Nick followed suit and set one monster and two spells or traps.

The game was on! Brad flip summoned Cyber Jar, pulling all spells and traps. Nick netted himself a Pyramid Turtle and set it in defense. Brad set four of his spells or traps and ended. Nick opened up by activating Ceasefire, dealing 1000 damage to Brad. After checking over his hand, he used Snatch Steal on Brad’s Sangan, switched Turtle to attack, and tributed Sangan for Jinzo. Brad took Exiled Force after Sangan hit the graveyard. Nick attacked with Pyramid Turtle, and then Jinzo, which prompted Brad to flip it face down with Book of Moon.

Brad played Giant Trunade, and Nick chained Dust Tornado to take out Brad’s Bottomless Trap Hole. Brad activated Swords of Revealing Light and Reload to get six new cards. “Give it to me!” he chanted, giving his deck a quick kiss. The deck wasn’t cooperating, though—“OH, come ON!” He set one spell or trap, a monster, and ended. Nick used Creature Swap, exchanging Brad’s facedown for Pyramid Turtle, then tributing it along with Hand of Nepthys to bring out Sacred Phoenix of Nepthys. With Book of Life, he brought out another Pyramid Turtle, and removed Brad’s Sangan. It seemed that Swords of Revealing Light would hold him off for now.

Brad drew, and thought hard. He looked through Nick’s graveyard, checked the cards in hand, and considered the life points. He was at 5800, and Nick held fast at 8000. “Ok, I’m going to do it,” he announced. He played three Brain Controls, taking over Jinzo, Phoenix, and Pyramid Turtle to clear Nick’s field. With Premature Burial, he returned Cyber Jar to the field, and then attacked with everything on his side for game.

Game 3

Nick went first, set one monster and ended. Brad followed by quickly setting a monster and a spell or trap. Nick summoned Breaker the Magical Warrior, and lost it to Brad’s Bottomless Trap Hole. Brad opened up aggressively on his next turn, flip summoning Cyber Jar. He laid out five cards, one after the other—Sangan, Nobleman of Crossout, Pyramid TurtlePyramid Turtle?! Both players netted a game loss due to illegal decks—Brad had Nick’s Pyramid Turtle, and Nick had Brad’s Mystic Tomato. Brad looked at the next few cards. “That’s my combo!” he yelled.

With very little time remaining in the round, it was on to game 4.

“This is it . . . good luck!” Both players shook hands, and Nick again went first. They opened the game with sets on their opening turns. Nick then flipped Ceasefire, dealing 1000 damage while he revealed his own Apprentice Magician and Brad’s D. D. Assailant. He summoned his own D. D. Assailant, attacked Brad’s, and ended. Brad struck back, summoning D. D. Survivor and taking out Apprentice Magician, which was replaced by a duplicate. He ended his turn after activating Swords of Revealing Light.

Play became conservative, as each player set cards and spells or traps. Nick eliminated Brad’s Morphing Jar with Nobleman of Crossout, removed his own. He then summoned Hand of Nephthys, tributing it along with another for Phoenix. Looking at Brad’s four spell or trap cards, he then activated Dark Hole, drawing exclamations of admiration from the onlookers. Brad drew, then activated giant Giant Trunade to save his cards, raising another appreciative noise from the crowd. He finally chained Scapegoat for protection.

Phoenix returned to the field, and Nick summoned Breaker. He attacked two Sheep tokens, then ended his turn just as the round ended. It was now all up to the end of round procedure.

Brad drew, activated Swords of Revealing Light, set a monster, and ended. Nick drew and ended his final turn. It all hinged on Brad’s last turn—he drew and then special summoned Gilasaurus. He tributed Gilasaurus and one goat for Hino-Kage-Tsuchi, and attacked Nick’s Breaker. Athough Nick had to discard his hand, the game was now over, and since he was ahead in life points, he won the match.
