The morning has come, and we are minutes away from the start of the Top 16 playoffs! 620 competitors traveled here this weekend to throw down for the title of Shonen Jump Champion, and now, just four rounds separates one of the remaining duelists from title gold. Could this be the end of a long comeback trail for Jae Kim? Another title for Chris Bowling? Or yet another jewel in the crown of The Princess. Today’s field is a mix of current competitive stars, rising up-and-comers and old school fan favorites.
Twelve TeleDAD duelists will mix it up in the Top 16 with one Lightsworn player, one Zombie player, and two more duelists running Gladiator Beasts and Corn Monarchs. Five of the Top 16 matches are TeleDAD mirrors, while three more are far more interesting.
Cesar Gonzalez will square off against Christian Acosta, as the number one Dark Armed Dragon player in history tackles the strange reappearance of Corn Monarchs. Cesar prefers to face mirror matches whenever possible, but today he’s faced with another rogue challenge. Will we see a replay of the disaster in Atlanta? Acosta is certainly hoping so.
Next up, Gianluca Bommino takes Lightsworn against Manuel Gonzalez’s Gladiator Beasts, in the return of a classic matchup. It’s not often we see this pairing in Day 2, and with the innovations made to each it should be an interesting one.
Finally, Chris Bowling’s bizarre TeleDAD variant will be pitted against the lone Zombie deck in Day 2 — John Burkhead’s dedicated Zombie build. Burkhead made all the right moves in his feature match yesterday, playing out of garbage hands and multiple Crush Card Virus activations to score an impressive match win. Will his skill and innovation be enough to take Bowling down?
It’s a lot of questions this morning, but we’re about to find out all the answers! Feature matches are about to begin, and in one hour the field will be cut in half. Welcome to Day 2 of Shonen Jump Championship San Francisco.
