Durham Shonen Jump TCG Championship Series Tournament

It’s over, and for the first time Zombies have taken both first and second place! Phillip Anthony is your new Shonen Jump Champion!

Anthony's path to the Championship was no easy one. First he was paired off against Nathan Balcombe, who was playing an aggressive Bazoo Return deck that threatened to out-speed even Zombies. From there he was pitted against Mark Vazquez, one of the top picks for the win here today and a previous Day 2 Finals competitor. Vazquez was the highest-ranked player after yesterday's Swiss rounds, and was running Perfect Circle teched with Solemn Judgment; a deck fully capable of stopping big plays like Book of Life or Zombie Master. Still, Anthony prevailed.

From there he had to duel his teammate Nicholas Palermo with Machine burn, no easy task since Anthony had fewer cards sided for the burn matchup than anyone else in Day 2. Again, he managed to win out despite the odds that were against him.

Finally, he took on Levi Yoder in an epic Zombie mirror match, narrowly scoring a 2-0 victory with some spectacular plays. Triple Card of Safe Return? That was just the beginning.

We are six long weeks away from the next Shonen Jump Championship in San Mateo, California, and a lot will change in the next month and a half. Light and Darkness Dragon will arrive in North America. Structure Deck – Rise of the Dragon Lords will bring many new cards into the fray, and Premium Pack 1 will be legal for play. Gladiator’s Assault will also be legal for San Mateo, so the number of changes to the competitive format is going to be huge. For now though, Zombies are on top, and are sure to see even more play thanks to Phillip Anthony’s win.

Congratulations to all the competitors here at Shonen Jump Durham, especially Phillip Anthony, your newest Shonen Jump Champion!

Day 2
This was it! With all the hype behind Zombies in this format, we were finally going to have a Zombie deck win a Shonen Jump Championship title.
This was a classic matchup for this format: Zombies versus Perfect Circle.
Five Zombie decks made Day 2, but Jermol Jupiter is playing the most creative and innovative build of it here today.
Both of these duelists have a tremendous amount of experience, and a tremendous amount of ambition toward another title win.
Today we’ll see one Bazoo Return, one Machine burn, Comic Odyssey burn, one Apprentice Monarch, five Zombie, and a whopping seven Perfect Circle decks go head-to-head.
Day 1
It’s over! A field of almost 550 duelists has come down to just a final 16, and tomorrow we’ll see the conclusion of this tournament in four rounds.
Fate had pitted two of the flagship members of Team Yu-Gi-Oh! ETC against each other here today.
Two National Championship Top 8’ers were now facing off, on the bubble.
Both of these competitors were playing for their continued life in this tournament.
20 year-old Mark Vasquez took second last year at Shonen Jump Orlando, capturing one of the first-ever copies of Crush Card Virus.
The reason for this feature match? Brody’s innovative deck design, which was undefeated here today. Watch and see.
Nine year-old Noah Morrison was undefeated here in round 5, and was now paired against Jason Holloway.
I’ve got a bit of extra time here in Round 4, so I want to take a look at another creative deck that’s as-of-yet undefeated.
I was glad to have a chance to look at Jeans’ “Perfect World” deck after his match with Andrew Fredella.
Jeans’ deck has garnered some attention here today, but now he’s up against his toughest opponent yet.
By the time San Mateo rolls around it’ll practically be a new format; let’s look at the four big reasons why.
Shane Scurry's playing a deck that’s a great choice in today’s metagame, and his build is highly dedicated and focused.
16 year-old Phong Nguyen hails from Greenville South Carolina, and is one of many duelists here this weekend playing Perfect Circle Monarch.
With two Shonen Jump Championships in the books duelists are becoming increasingly sure of the expected shape of the North American metagame, and that means one thing: innovation, and disruption of the predicted norm.
