Finals: Shane Scurry vs. Daniel Tate
Jerome McHale

It’s an all Destiny Hero final here in Minneapolis as Shane Scurry and his Destiny Hero beatdown take on Daniel Tate and his Destiny Hero Monarch deck. Shane has been pulling off some spectacular wins this weekend, and is looking for his second Jump win. Daniel wanted to thank Carl, Justin, and all his other supporters while Shane wanted to thank T for his deck. Daniel Tate is only in his second Shonen Jump Championship. It seems that second time is the charm more often than the third when it comes to SJCs, as Jessy Samek was also playing in his second Jump when he won in Philadelphia.

Shane won the opening roll and started off with a set monster. Daniel had a set for each zone, and play was back to Shane, who flipped Card Trooper and dumped Heavy Storm, Dasher, and Destiny Draw into his graveyard to pump it. The Trooper ran into Treeborn Frog, and Shane set Mystical Space Typhoon only to lose it to Daniel’s Mystical Space Typhoon in the end phase. Frog came back for Daniel, and he activated Reinforcement of the Army to fetch Elemental Hero Stratos. Stratos was summoned, Daniel searched out Disk Commander, and he attacked the Trooper for 1400. Shane drew for his Trooper, then started his turn off with Cyber Dragon and Card Trooper. Trooper pumped, knocking Mirror Force, Fear Monger, and Reinforcement of the Army into the graveyard, and Metamorphosis traded out the Dragon for Dark Balter the Terrible. Balter negated Treeborn Frog while Trooper took down Stratos. He passed with no further plays, and play was back to Daniel.

Daniel couldn’t get his Frog, so he set a card to each zone and passed. Shane pumped his Trooper again, losing Premature Burial, Stratos, and Cyber Dragon, but Pot of Avarice shuffled those two monsters and three others back into the deck, allowing him to draw two cards! Destiny Draw came down next, pitching Malicious, and Shane brought out his second Malicious. That Malicious was tributed for Jinzo, and Daniel was in serious trouble. Limiter Removal would win the game, and Balter attacked Disk Commander. The Machines attacked, but Shane didn’t have the quick-play. It didn’t matter though, as Daniel simply couldn’t do anything in his next turn, and he scooped up his cards shortly thereafter. Both players side decked between games, and Daniel was starting to look awfully nervous.

Daniel started with Reinforcement of the Army for Stratos, who in turn fetched Malicious. Disk Commander was pitched to Destiny Draw, and Daniel set a spell or trap before passing. Shane opened with Snipe Hunter, pitching Malicious to successfully destroy Stratos. Ring of Destruction was chained, and the field was totally bare. Shane set a spell or trap and was forced to eat 1900 damage from his own Ring next turn as he blew away Daniel’s freshly summoned and pumped Card Trooper. Daniel set three spell or traps, and passed his turn revealing Trap Dustshoot in the standby phase to rob Shane of his Morphing Jar. Shane set Mirror Force but lost it to Mystical Space Typhoon in the end phase, and Daniel went on the offensive once again! He summoned his second Malicious and tributed him for Thestalos to rob Shane of Snipe Hunter before attacking directly for 2400. Shane top-decked Snatch Steal and played it to steal Thestalos the Firestorm Monarch. Daniel destroyed his own Monarch with Sakuretsu Armor, and Shane eyed his Malicious in the graveyard. The second one was in his hand, but he opted not to summon the third. Once again, Shane got lucky and Daniel couldn’t press for the win. Instead he set a spell or trap and passed back to Shane who did likewise. Daniel passed and Shane opted to get his third Malicious out of the deck. He was on the defensive and set a second monster to impede Daniel’s path to his life points. Daniel used Brain Control to steal Shane’s Malicious and tributed him for Raiza the Storm Monarch! Raiza bounced Shane’s set monster and attacked directly for game! Daniel forces this match to game 3!

It was Shane’s turn to start for the final game, and he opened with a set spell or trap. Confiscation from Daniel discarded his Snipe Hunter, and Daniel set a spell or trap. Both players passed for two turns before Shane set a second spell or trap card. Daniel set a monster, and Shane summoned Card Trooper, losing his Virus and Cyber Dragon but putting Disk Commander into the graveyard! Card Trooper was blasted by Sakuretsu Armor, and Shane set a second spell or trap. Heavy Storm blew them both away, prompting Shane to chain Scapegoat, and Daniel tributed his set Disk Commander for Thestalos to rob Shane of a Brain Control. He attacked a token and Shane set a card to each zone before passing back to Daniel. Daniel had Premature Burial for his Commander, and he revived him to draw two cards before attacking two tokens and setting a monster.

Shane was back up, but he passed his turn in favor of letting Daniel tribute his set Sangan for Raiza the Storm Monarch! Raiza put Shane’s monster on top of his deck, and Sangan fetched Treeborn Frog for Daniel. Disk Commander hit a Sheep and Shane used Threatening Roar to shut down the rest of the battle phase. Heavy Storm from Shane cleared Disk Commander and Daniel’s Ring of Destruction off the field, but he still had to deal with a pair of Monarchs. Shane put down Cyber Dragon and Card Trooper before removing Malicious to summon a second. That Malicious was tributed to Metamorphosis to bring out Dark Blade the Dragon Knight, and the third one was brought out in his stead. Brain Control on a Monarch sealed the deal and Shane Scurry took the game and the match! Shane Scurry wins his second Shonen Jump Championship, defeating Daniel Tate, 2-1!
