The last two Challenges we’ve had have actually produced a winner — but such is not the case for this weekend. Coming from a field of 806 competitors, anyone would be hard-pressed to make such a guarantee, but there were plenty of people who were willing to make it. I cut registration off at 16 but we had at least 40 people who wanted to sign up.
Anyways, here’s a look at our final standings!
Anthony Alvarado — Our highest-placing competitor, Anthony came in 26th place, with 8 wins and 2 losses. In a smaller event, he might have made it, but 800+ other competitors made that impossible. Technically, he shouldn’t have scrubbed out.
Dale Bellido — SCRUBBED! Dale dropped from the tournament, but his hair still looked awesome.
Matt Bishop — SCRUBBED! Matt dropped from the tournament, but he lingered long into the night.
Andrew Bollinger — SCRUBBED! Andrew dropped from the tournament, alas – our first ever competitor didn’t make it this time.
Thai Bui — SCRUBBED! Thai dropped from the tournament.
Nick Curtis — SCRUBBED! Nick dropped from the tournament.
Ethan Fox — SCRUBBED! Ethan dropped from the tournament.
Henry Kin — SCRUBBED! Henry dropped from the tournament.
Matt Knaub — Matt came in 42nd place, with 7 wins and 3 losses. Still a respectable finish out of 800 players!
Jonathan Labounty — Jonathan also went 7-3, and came in 94th place. It was a long, long day.
Jerome McHale — Jerome stuck it out until the end, and took 44th place with his counter fairy deck, with a fair amount of the internet cheering him on for his unconventional choice. 7 wins and 3 losses for Jerome.
Chris Pittao — SCRUBBED! Chris dropped from the tournament.
Mike Powers — Mike played it out with 6 wins and 4 losses, taking 148th place and seeing the Challenge to the end.
Roberto Rivera — SCRUBBED! Roberto dropped from the tournament.
Scott Schwartz — SCRUBBED! Scott dropped from the tournament.
Alan Taulbee — SCRUBBED! Alan dropped from the tournament.
Tariq Williams — another 7-3 player, Tariq came in 68th, hanging in until the end to collect some product prizes.
When your last round ends sometime after midnight, it’s not surprising that so many people decide to drop once they’ve had too many losses. While prizes did drop down to the top 128, the siren song of sleep was hard for many of yesterday’s players to resist as the day wore on.
I’d have been surprised if anyone had managed to pull this one off, out of such a hugely competitive event. Anthony came close, and if it had been a normal sized event he probably would have made it. Anyways, on to the best part of the challenge — the Gallery of Shame!
Come on, Anthony…it’s not John William’s fault you fell short of Top 8!
Dale recalls a highlight of original Scrub Brush Challenge with his poignant picture.
Taliq is happy to help Ethan out with his scrub. He’ll be feeling that in the morning.
Henry Kim is also grist to Taliq’s Scrubmill…
Nick opted to get some help from Dale. The more good looking hair in your scrub pic, the better.
Who wants to help scrub Taliq? Any takers???
Matt had such high hopes for this challenge, a chance to redeem his less-than-stellar performance at Canadian Nationals, and then Paul Levitin refused to scrub him. Poor Matt, it was a disappointing day all round.
Scott took his scrubbing philosophically, just happy to have had the chance to participate. He’s doing much better in the Regional today, by the way.
Win or lose, Chris Pittao keeps smiling. There’s nothing like a good scrub.
Poor Jerome, all he got was this lousy photo!
Hmm . . . it looks like a few of our competitors skipped out without paying the penalty. We can’t have that, can we?
